From Our President
With the all consuming days surrounding Hurricane Irma in the past, we
have an opportunity to build the future. I have never felt such anxiety about
the very essence of life. I will contemplate this as an opportunity for
personal growth, focusing on what is really important in life and
appreciating the things I take for granted. I’m inspired by tremendous
outreach within our community, folks offering physical and emotional
support. On the next page is a message from our GFWC Florida President,
Mary Powell, offering assistance to members in need. At our Sept 20th
meeting, we will vote on making a donation to the Disaster Relief Fund
which has been recommended by GFWC Florida. We welcome you to bring
your ideas for volunteering to that Sept 20th meeting.
Looking ahead, numerous activities are planned for the rest of the year with
several needed a leader. We usually have signup sheets at our meetings so
contact the event chair to signup if you will miss a meeting. No harm
contacting them ahead if you feel passionate! Your directory has all contact
info. This is YOUR CLUB and only with your involvement can we succeed. So
don’t be shy about sharing your ideas and stepping up to lead an event that
still needs a chair.
I’m so happy to be back in the swing of normal life and look forward to seeing you at our 9/20 meeting, featuring a speaker from Alpha House, a shelter for homeless pregnant or new mothers. We’ll collect gently used kitchen/household items for them. We’ll also collect eclipse glasses to be donated to Astronomers without Borders and Explore Scientific. Looking ahead, October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please bring in your used cell phones, to be donated to the National Coalition against Domestic Violence. (Vicki Christenson, Chair).
In the volunteer spirit,
Pat Kaufman

SEPTEMBER 2017
Volunteer To Make a Difference!
From Our GFWC Florida President
Dear Federation Sisters,
Hurricane Irma was one for the record books and we survived!!! At one point it covered almost all of Florida
and touched our members in all of the 14 Districts.
You have been in my thoughts and prayers as we start pulling it back together. The GFWC Florida Executive
Committee is here to help you in any way we can so don't hesitate to be in touch with any one of us. We are
scattered throughout the state and are available for you at any time.
The 2017 Fall Board of Director's Meeting is on schedule starting Friday, September 22nd at the Rosen Plaza in
Orlando. They are eagerly awaiting our arrival. Let's relax and enjoy a fun Beach Blanket Bingo weekend with
our Federation Sisters and put the worries of the storm behind us.
As we do begin to assess the damage to our homes and clubhouses, please keep in mind that we will have a
designated Disaster Relief Fund and if you have an overwhelming need for assistance, be sure to be in touch
with us. Please, though, put your specific damages in writing as we will have to consider each one on an
individual basis. You can send your request via email to any Executive Committee member or you can email
or mail a letter to our Headquarters and it will be forwarded to us for consideration. Our address at
headquarters is:
GFWC Florida
4444 Florida National Drive
Lakeland, FL 33813
The email address for headquarters is [email protected]. We look forward to seeing many of you next weekend as we come together in friendship and service. In the meantime, if you need us, please let us know. I can't wait to see you soon! Living the Volunteer Spirit with you! Mary Mary C. Powell, President GFWC Florida Federation of Women's Clubs 904-261-0746 Home 904-753-2196 Cell [email protected]
From Our Vice-President, Elaine Jones . . .
Things are back in full swing and it’s like we never took a break for summer! I’m very happy to report that we have nine
new members among us. We welcomed several at our August meeting, and will do the same in September with the
remainder. All of you should have an up to date directory that was sent out following the meeting. Please use this to
reach your volunteers when chairing a committee or event.
We had a pretty busy August considering we were only really active the
second half of the month. The girls had a great time at Trinity Café as
always, as did the volunteers at Ronald McDonald House -thank you Fern
and Sue for heading those up.
For those of you that missed our social outing to lunch and Art of the Brick
this week, you really missed a fun time. Geri and Alison coordinated this
event and it was a great one. I hope all of you are following our Facebook
page, https://www.facebook.com/GfwcWomansClubOfNewTampa/ , so you
can see our activities and events. We would like you to share them with your
friends as well and maybe some of them will want to join us!
I’m looking forward to seeing many of you at our new member orientation
and social next week. Please check the calendar for the many events
coming up in September and through the end of the year.
Warm Regards,
Elaine
P.S. This was sent to us after our RMH visit. We really do make a
difference!
From Our Treasurer, Caralyn Paul. . .
Hello! We currently have cash balance of $23,486. Our income is mostly from membership dues at this point. So excited
that we have 64 members right now. Our expenses so far have been for our planning meetings, website renewal, new
member name tags, Alpha House bags, Joshua House Halloween bags, Shriner Activity bags and the book supply drive
for Hunters Green and Mort Elementary schools.
Please do not be shy about suggesting causes that you would like the Club to support!
From Our S.E.R.V. E. chair, Juli Morris
This year HGE's motto is "Building Our Way to an A" and we are playing an integral part. Eight of our members were able
to attend an orientation meeting for tutors. Several additional members have committed to helping at the school. There
are 47 classrooms and the goal is for each classroom to have its own volunteer. It's not too late to participate if you
would like to become a tutor or clerical volunteer. Just visit the Hillsborough County Schools website Volunteer
Application. If you would specifically like to become a tutor there is a second orientation on Septempber 8th at 9 a.m. in
the media center. The time is minimal, and the benefits are great!
Trinity Cafe
Trinity Cafe's Busch Blvd (TC2) provides a free, hot, three-course meal Monday-Friday to the homeless and working poor.
We serve patrons just as we would like to be treated when we dine
out. For all who walk through the door, being served a hot, nutritious
meal with dignity and respect along with caring conversation, is the
absolute highlight of their day.
After a brief orientation at 11am, a coordinator assigns tasks such as
greeting & serving guests, hosting tables, preparing silverware, and
bussing. Lunch is served 11:30-12:30, followed by clean-up. In the
spirit of fellowship, volunteers are encouraged to eat with the guests
towards the end of the shift (a small donation to cover the meal is
optional). You may find yourself dining with lingering guests who
truly enjoy your company, or fellow volunteers, from all walks of life.
We clean up quickly and reset for the next day, finished by 1:15, the
latest.
GFWC New Tampa members who have participated can attest to rewarding encounters with people that are going
through rough times, whether it's homelessness or the working poor, who just can't make ends meet. I hope that you join
us on a club day to experience the Trinity Cafe!
