Fall 2019...Volunteers on the Move!

Health, Happiness, and Helping OthersHello Clubwomen of District Four -

The summer months have passed us by and now we are gearing up for a busy Fall. Welcome back to club work! Fall is packed with club events, District and State meetings, and lots of volunteering. We have a few updates and reminders for you as you plan for the coming months.

The list of Club Presidents has been updated with several new presidents this year. The list has been sent to each club and to the GFWC-NC headquarters. You may also find this in the District 4 Club Manual on our website. www.gfwcncdistrictfour.org. Some bylaw changes will be presented at the meeting for your consideration and approval; as well as a proposed budget for 2019-2020. The GFWC-NC District 4 Nominating Committee will present officer candidates for the 2020-2022 term. There are still some open positions and the committee is faithfully Looking for a Few Good Leaders!

I would like to extend the invitation to you and your club members to attend the 2019 District Four Fall Meeting on October 5th held in Burlington. The invitation and registration for the meeting can be found within this newsletter. Please note the deadline to register for the meeting is September 17th. Registration needs to be in the mail and postmarked by September 17th. A late registration fee will be applied to those registering on or after this date or at the door. I would like to thank the ladies of the Burlington Woman’s Club for hosting us. The theme for this meeting is “Health, Happiness, and Helping Others”.

Since October is Domestic Awareness Month, plan to wear Purple or wear GFWC-NC District 4 color….Coral to the District Fall Meeting. Show your commitment to stopping domestic abuse and show all your love for GFWC-NC District Four. Invitations are being sent to all past District Six, District Seven, and District Four Presidents and Junior Directors.

We have some great workshops planned that will reinforce the “health and happiness” aspect of this year’s theme. Of course, our main purpose is “helping others”.

The Alamance-Burlington School Social Work Department states that many students return to school without the proper items needed for a successful year. Around the county, many efforts are geared toward the collection of school supplies. However, some students arrive to school without the basic necessities. Many students do not have adequate access to hygiene items. At times this can be a barrier for students and families. Some of those items include:

Shampoo/Conditioner (For diverse hair), Soap, Toothpaste /Toothbrush/Mouthwash

Deodorant (Male & Female), Lotion, Underwear (All sizes (PreK-12th), Male & Female)

Laundry Detergent (Laundry Pods are requested), Feminine Hygiene Items, Belts, Socks

Any of these items donated will help families greatly. No child should attend school feeling defeated due to the lack of these items. Please help to encourage and assist under privileged children by bringing any item or items you can.

In Federation Spirit,Eva Jackson, District Four President

Be sure to attend the District Fall Meeting where we will vote on the

2020-2022 GFWC-NC District Four Slate of Officers, as well as select our

Nominees for the Nominating Committee for the 2022-2024 Administration.

GFWC Leadership Education and Development Seminar (LEADS)The GFWC-NC Leadership Education and Development Seminar (LEADS) program is designed for any clubwoman that would like to accept leadership positions at all levels. Please send your Club’s nominee for the District Four LEADS representative to District President Eva Jackson by November 1st. This is a great training and learning seminar offered by GFWC-NC in January - who knows…the District Four representative could be chosen from across the state to represent GFWC-NC at the GFWC International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia next year!

Spotlight on ClubsWomen’s League of EdenWomen's League of Eden is in a transition year, as we are changing to a calendar year for budget, officers, planning, and meetings.  We did take the summer months off from meetings, but hosted a very successful Red Cross Blood Drive at the local YMCA in August.  Three new members were installed at our May meeting, and we already have potential members interested in joining in December.  We are hoping to increase membership, as some of our charter and veteran members are aging out and unable to remain active with us.  WLOE has been intentional about getting our name out in the community, such as by donating a bench (with nameplate) on a local walking trail.  This fall, we are planning to have a hands-on workshop at the October meeting to prepare items needed by some of the organizations we support.  We were fortunate to have another profitable fund raiser in the spring, and have plans for a bigger fund raiser this fall.  The needs in our community are great, and we are continuing to work as a club to be able to meet some of these through our fund raiser monies and through members' volunteer hours.  The WLOE Board is excited about getting our meetings started in September, as we have lined up speakers with valuable knowledge to educate us in areas of public service.
