A Message from your 2018-2020 Iowa State President, Eileen Hageman

Dear GFWC Sisters,

Is it just me, or does time go faster these days? I remember as a child on a

dairy farm in Winneshiek County, my summers were defined by how many

books I could read that summer. Now days, I find my summers are defined by

the passage of particular events such as holidays, things like board meetings,

conventions, State Fair, vacations, deadlines and community celebrations.

The clock seems to move faster!

Time is not the only perception that has changed. During those same years, I

thought someone 25 years old was ancient. Now looking at it from a newer

and much older perspective, I realize just how wrong I was! Now I find I have to "do the math" to figure

out the ages of my very own kids. Inevitably, I am surprised just how old they've become!

You get the idea! We are all busy. Why, because a good volunteer tends to have a wide variety of commit-

ments. With that said, know that I so appreciate everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, that you have

done for the betterment of GFWC. I see our organization, with our great volunteers and leadership, as

one that really can help make our world a better place!

I encourage you to share the challenges that your club might be facing. I know we can't solve all problems,

but we'd like to try. I'd also encourage you to share "good ideas .” We can all learn from each other.

I am looking forward to attending your upcoming District Conventions. This is such a good opportunity

to meet new, and talk to GFWC friends. I feel good about the leadership team we have in place. We are

positive and energetic. We are ready and willing to "Bridge the Gaps!”

Yours in GFWC,

Eileen

A Note from President-elect, Bette Kuboushek

I look forward to working with the District Directors and Vice Directors in this administration. I know you are all hard at work getting your district conventions in place. I hope to see you all in September at the Fall Board Meeting.

Submit your GFWC/Iowa Membership Dues

As Soon As Possible!

It is time again for clubs to send their annual membership dues to GFWC/Iowa

Head-quarters. Instructions were sent out by either email or regular mail to all club

treasurers mid-August. The deadline for submitting membership dues is October 1,

and they are $32.00 per member. This covers your dues to both GFWC and GFWC/

Iowa. Please remember to send an alphabetical and numbered list of members along

with your dues check for updating our records. If you include email addresses, these

will be added to our emailing address list. Occasionally, we send information by email

that you would not receive through regular mail. Also, please keep us informed of any

officer changes in your clubs.

Thank you!

FALL ARTS

The GFWC Arts Community Service Program encourages members to

promote and support arts activities in their clubs, schools, and communities.

It is designed to inspire clubwomen and ignite within them a desire to make

their world a more beautiful place. The goal is to create programs and

projects that include music, literature, dance, drama, theatre, and other

arts-related areas, both traditional and innovative.

Fall is a great time for clubs to make crafts for all the upcoming Holidays-Halloween,

Thanksgiving and Christmas. Maybe even repurpose some items and use for a Fundraiser.

Decorate Holiday Trees for sale or to take to a care center. Fall is one of the most beautiful

times of the year to take pictures or paint pictures. Get out before the weather is cold or snowy

and see a play or go on a museum outing. On days you are kept indoors, start writing that

story you always wanted to put down on paper.

It has been found that Art relieves stress, encourages creative thinking, boosts self-esteem,

provides a sense of accomplishment, alleviates symptoms of depression, improves

communication skills, increases brain connectivity and plasticity, improves problem-solving

skills and much more.

Do yourself, your club, and community a favor and get involved in the ARTS this fall!

Home Life

Thanks once again to each club that reported in the Home Life program area. After reading all your reports, there were so many outstanding programs and projects. I am certain the projects and programs have made a difference in your club and community.

Home Life can be any topic that improves our lives- anything that improves our health or our home environment. Please email me at [email protected] for program ideas. I can also send information on our partner programs: Easter Seals which provides rehabilitation and support services for children and adults with disabilities, and Canine Companions for Independence to give independence to people with disabilities.

I am looking forward to more reports and seeing what we’ve accomplished in 2018.

Have a great GFWC year!

COMMUNITY SERVICE EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

Focus on Literacy

The emphasis for Education Community Service programs is LITERACY. The entire administration is emphasizing DIVERSITY. This provides a multitude of multicultural literacy projects for clubs to initiate with imagination and innovation.

International President Mary Ellen Brock has included in her initiatives to have members donate 1,000 Dr. Seuss books. Five hundred books will remain in local communities and five hundred will be sent to Washington, D.C. for distribution at Head Start facilities, children's hospitals and schools.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record 2018

October 25th, 2018

I would like to introduce you to a fun and exciting event that I have participated in for over 10 years.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record is an event where parents, grandparents, teachers, friends, and

ordinary people will read the same book on the same day all over the world to children in grades

preschool through first grade. The annual event was started over 10 years ago to remind us the

importance of building early reading and language skills to every child.

This year we are reading the book Maybe Something Beautiful by F. Isabel Campoy and Theresa

Howell and illustrated by Rafael Lopez.

Here is a link where you can learn more about Jumpstart’s Read for the Record and register to read

to children in your area. The books can also be ordered online and are shipped directly to your

home. I order one book for each classroom or group I am reading to so I can leave the book with

the class and they can continue to enjoy the story and lesson taught.

Website: www.jstart.org/read-for-the-record.

Here are a few fun statistics from the 2017 event with the book Quackers.

50 states and all territories participated

64 countries

1,000+ US School Districts

135,000 books distributed to children across the country

This was a picture from 2017 when I was reading Quackers.

Good Leaders Need Good Followers

Every good leader knows the importance of having good followers. The following twelve qualities that are essential to being a good follower are as quoted from “The Forgotten Side of Leadership” are:

As you look at the above list, which one or two, etc. qualities do you need to work on? Be positive and frequently encourage other members as they work to improve as followers and leaders. Working together as followers and leaders we can be most productive as members and as GFWC clubs.

Club Membership Expansion Grants:

GFWC /Iowa clubs will be able to apply for $50 grants to be used toward new member

recruitment activities. We have received a $200 donation from a Solon area contractor to be

used toward this purpose. Application forms will need to be requested through

Headquarters. Completed applications are due November 1st. If grants remain, we will

have a second round, with a February 1st application date.

This money is intended to underwrite the cost of recruitment efforts that your club might

have; such as food, building space, brochures, a club activity done at a meeting to which

multiple potential members have been invited, etc.

These grants are in addition to grants available thru the International GFWC Headquarters.

There would be no penalty in applying for grants from both locations. International is able

to award their grants four times per year. This is a great opportunity for us to "give back" to

our clubs for a worthwhile cause. I hope that we will have several applications!

Using the phrase "Unity in Diversity—Returning to our Roots to Secure our Future" will be our theme for this administration. One of the things that we will be working on is for each member to bring a new member to GFWC in this club year. This will be called "Replace Yourself.” By doing this we can increase membership by 20%. Our recruitment plan for September, October and November is to "Focus on Recruitment" by holding a GFWC Federation refresher for both new and seasoned club members. The deadline for reporting this to the Membership Committee is due by November 15. Again, I will be emailing information to all club presidents to assist you with this focus. We need to remember that recruitment is a team effort; use your diversity to reach every-one, enjoy the party and have fun with the recruitment. Some of the other things we will be doing to seek the members is “Thank You Tuesday” and a service project on Martin Luther King Day. Hopefully these things will increase interest of women in your community. I will also be instituting a membership email on the first of each month with ideas and up-dates on things happening at Headquarters and in other clubs around our nation. Remember!!! Diversity is: different individuals valuing each other regardless of skin, intellect, talents or years. Thank you, and I’ll look forward to working with each of you during this administration. Please, if you have any questions or concerns, contact me. My information email is [email protected], and my phone number is 563-581-4326. As you can see, I have moved to Illinois but am still a GFWC/Iowa proud member . My info is also in the Blue-book. I will also be happy to attend and assist you at any functions you would like.

Greetings Fellow GFWC/Iowa Club Members:

Summer is quickly coming to an end, and fall will soon be right behind. Many GFWC/Iowa clubs will soon be starting their new club years. Here is hoping you all have a great club year ahead.

As the new fundraising chair, I am working with the Finance Committee to come up with some new fundraising ideas. We have several ideas but have not finalized any of them yet. Some ideas will be shared at the upcoming District Conventions.

One project though that we would like all clubs to do is start taking lots of pictures of the many events and/or activities with which you are currently involved. We would like pictures related to the events/projects themselves — not just group pictures of the club members. Perhaps take a picture of a float your club had in a parade, or flowers around your town’s welcome sign that your club planted, or a major sewing project completed, or any other project/event you wish to share with others. It is up to each club to determine what pictures they take. Take as many pictures as you want for right now.

We would like digital photos, if at all possible, taken with a camera or a smart phone. These pictures are separate and not a part of the ARTS photo contest, which has specific rules and dates of when photos are taken. Pictures from this past April after the 2018 state convention until April 2019 at the next state convention are the ones that are wanted. Please do not send them to anyone at this time; information about when and where to send them will be sent out later when we have decided exactly how we will use them.

Members are encouraged to take photos for the ARTS photo contests as well. The ARTS photo contest has special rules and dates and is separate from the photos for this project. See Photography article, page 9.

Order your Scrip cards now. Check with www.gfwc.org to look at the list of Scrip cards available. Send your order by email to [email protected] or call Sandy at 319-363-2210. She will send the Scrip cards to you or bring them to the Board Meeting or the Region Meeting. Send a check for the total amount ordered to GFWC/Iowa Headquarters at 3839 Merle Hay Rd., Suite 201, Des Moines, Iowa 50310.

Scrip cards are great gifts for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, thank you’s, showers, holiday gifts, graduations, etc. Use them to go to your favorite restaurants or to purchase hotel rooms and to buy gas.

Purchasing Scrip cards cost the same as if you purchased them at any store; but by purchasing them through Scrip, GFWC/Iowa gets from 5% up to 16% of your order.

Order Scrip cards and support GFWC/Iowa.

Two Photography Contests This year we have two contests:

Both are statewide contests, and one will have the winner sent on to enter into the International GFWC Photography Contests.

Since we have two, we are moving up the deadline for the contests to make sure judging is completed by our earlier state convention date.

This deadline is two weeks earlier than stated in the Bluebook.

(The Bluebook date will be honored, but the new date is much preferred due to timing needed for this judging.)

Please send in pictures by the new state deadline for our photography contests by March 15, 2019.

1. Bridges of Iowa Contest — To support our State President’s Theme, “Bridging the Gaps,” we are having club contests of Bridge Photos. We encourage each club to hold a contest. All members should participate and take pictures of an interesting or beautiful bridge on a digital camera or phone or any developed film and send the club winner in the form of a colored 4 x 6 horizontal/landscape photo to the state bridge photography contest. We will compile the winning pictures and make a Fundraising Item for GFWC/Iowa. Clubs and photographers will be acknowledged. Only one club winner should be sent on to this statewide contest.

2. The GFWC Photography Contest — This yearly contest includes:

- The World in Pictures — (Living Things, Scenes, Still Life) - GFWC Volunteers in Action — (Club volunteer activities)

1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners from the above contests will receive ribbons at the state level, and 1st place winners will be sent on to the GFWC International Photo Contest.

- A Year in Pictures — (abstract, buildings, monuments) These photos should be sent in directly by clubs to GFWC.

Please see the Bluebook and the GFWC Club Manual- Contests Section, Photography Contest for more information. Send the World in Pictures and GFWC Volunteers in Action photos to me by March 15, 2019.
