Shri Murali Meher S/o Late Shri Rajiba Meher was born on 03.02.1956 at Jhiliminda in Odisha state in a Bhulia (weaver) family. He learnt handloom weaving at an early age from his father Late Shri Rajiba Meher, Shri Hiralal Meher and Late Shri Karthika Meher. He extensively worked in the field of Sambalpuri single and double Ikat weaving. He simplified the designs and imparted training to 500 weavers as a result of which productivity and quality has been improved and wages of the weavers increased. He also trained 10 weavers under Guru Shishya Parampara scheme. He developed many new designs in tie & dye. In order to revive the Sambalpuri saree, he collected old samples, researched on them and developed new designs. He participated in many exhibitions and promoted the craft. Due to his encouragement, 7 weavers won National Award. He has been practising the craft for 42 years. He received many awards including National Award in 1995.

He receives the Sant Kabir Award for his invaluable contribution towards the development of handlooms.

This saree is woven using tie & dye technique tradition of Bargarh, Odisha. In this process, first the design is drawn free hand and then it is transferred on the graph paper. As per the design, the yarn is tied and then dyed repeatedly according to the colour palette.

The anchal of this saree is decorated with Nagbandhi design with tussar phuleri. Traditional motifs like elephant, horse, deer, lion, fish, tree and lotus etc. have been woven beautifully which make the saree stand apart from the other sarees. The border is decorated with Panch Phulia and other designs. The body of the saree is black colour, which is worked upon with buti of Sebati and Supari flowers. The raw material used is cotton in both warp and weft and tussar yarn is used in extra warp and extra weft to make designs.

This unique expression of art is adored nationally and internationally as IKAT weaving. Products like saree, dress material, bed-sheet, pillow cover, drapery, wall hanging etc. are also developed by this technique.

Motifs taken from the flora and fauna make this Ikat art form evergreen. The wall panel “Sacred Chants” depict Hanuman Chalisa in Devnagri script. In this wall panel, the fabric is made of pata (silk) and dyed in natural colours extracted from palash flower. Use of chemicals or artificial colours in any form is shunned religiously to maintain the purity.
