DESCRIPTION
Various sections of the route have already been completed and are open for use. These are shown on the map overleaf (correct at time of printing). Throughout the Lee Valley, historic fragments of its past can be found by the determined explorer using the Pathway. Just one of the fascinating heritage sites is the House Mill on Three Mills Island at Bromley-by-Bow. Built in 1776 in the Dutch style, it ground grain for gin distilling and is the largest tidal mill left standing in Britain.

Many paths in Lee Valley Regional Park are ‘Shared Use’ pathsfor walkers, dog walkers, cyclists, anglers and joggers to enjoy. Most are well surfaced and suitable for wheelchair users andpeople pushing buggies. They’re also suitable for recreationalcycling with family and friends but not suitable for fast journeysor for large groups of cyclists. Other paths in the Regional Parkare not recommended for cyclists.
This sign indicates that the path is for shared use andpedestrians have right of way.
Paths in the Regional Park which don’t have this sign are forpedestrians only. You can also cycle on paths and roads in theRegional Park which are owned by other organisations e.g.public highways and bridleways.
In most cases towpaths are not public rights of way but routesthat can be used by the public with the permission of thelandowner. Permission to use the towpath is given to walkersand cyclists on a long-term basis by British Waterways.
Lee Valley Regional Park has some of the best walkingopportunities in the region. The Lea Valley Walk, whichstretches 80kms (50 miles) from Luton to the River Thames, links all the facilities in the Regional Park using the towpath ofthe River Lee. The London Loop, which has been described asthe M25 for walkers, crosses the Park between Cockfostersthrough to Enfield Lock and then to Chingford (Sections 17 and 18). Other paths in the Regional Park provide walks throughfascinating areas, including Three Mills, Gunpowder Park andRiver Lee Country Park.
Access for allLee Valley Regional Park has won awards for the high standard of accessibility for some of its trails including theGrasshopper and Water-Lily Walks in River Lee Country Park. These trails have been designed and improved so that disabledpeople, especially visitors who use wheelchairs can fully accessthese special areas of countryside. Much of the Regional Park is accessible to both buggies and wheelchairs.
Cycle hireThere are currently two cycle hire venues in the Regional Park atBroxbourne Old Mill & Meadows and Tottenham Marshes.

The Lee Valley PathwayThe Lee Valley Pathway is a dual use pedectrian and cycle-waywhich runs for almost the entire length of the Regional Park. It will form part of Routes 1 and 61 of the National CycleNetwork, a project championed by Sustrans.
Stretching 45kms (28 miles) and threading its way from ruralHertfordshire down to the River Thames, the Pathway has avariety of uses. It’s a route for local access, providing safe, off-road recreational cycling and links many of the various facilitiesof the Regional Park. When it’s fully completed it’s envisagedthat the Pathway will become a principal way into London forthose who choose not to travel by car.
Public open spacesThe Lee Valley Pathway will connect a string of parks and publicopen spaces, including the 400 hectare (1,000 acre) River LeeCountry Park, Walthamstow and Leyton Marshes, HackneyMarshes, Bow Creek Ecology Park and East India Dock Basin.
HeritageThroughout the Lee Valley, historic fragments of its past can befound by the determined explorer using the Pathway. Just one of the fascinating heritage sites is the House Mill on Three MillsIsland at Bromley-by-Bow. Built in 1776 in the Dutch style, it ground grain for gin distilling and is the largest tidal mill leftstanding in Britain.
Using the Lee Valley PathwayVarious sections of the route have already been completed and are open for use. These are shown on the map overleaf (correct at time of printing).
