Accessible but not student-ready

Source of K-12 textbooks purchased after July 19, 2006 when specified by purchase contract

Currently contains nearly 6,000 textbooks

More than 3,300 of these

are already in Booksharewww.nimac.us

Who Uses the NIMAC? One state NIMAC Coordinator “names” up

to five Authorized Users (AU) who can download files from the NIMAC.

States also contract with Accessible Media Producers (AMP) to get files ready for students.

Bookshare functions as both an AU and an AMP, depending on the state

Educators obtain NIMAC books from Bookshare – process depends on the state

1. NIMAC textbook is already in Bookshare because an educator previously requested it Educator can download it for a student

2. Textbook is in the NIMAC (www.nimac.us) but not yet in Bookshare Ask Bookshare to get the book from the NIMAC

on your behalf

How to Get Books that are in the NIMAC but Not Yet in Bookshare* Use “ContactUs” and select “NIMAC

Textbooks and Other NIMAC Questions” under “My question is about”

Provide the title, author, ISBN of the book and your contact info

We will retrieve the book from the NIMAC and add it to Bookshare within two weeks

We will notify you via email when the book is available for download.

*Only for states in which Bookshare is an AU

Current average turn around: two weeks

Teacher If find textbook that is in the NIMAC but not yet in Bookshare, contact state AU and ask that book be assigned to Bookshare.

Who Can Download NIMAC Books from Bookshare?

Any U.S. K-12 educator with Bookshare membership NIMAC books are for K-12 schools only NIMAC books may not be downloaded by

students Educators may download NIMAC books only

for students with a print disability and an IEP

Bookshare is authorized to produce digital books in accessible formats through an exemption in

the U.S. copyright law called the Chafee Amendment.

Contact your book purchasing department and see if request was made to publisher.

Check with your State Coordinator to see what contracts are in place with publishers.

Be sure textbook purchasers stipulate NIMAS files in publisher contracts.

Find suggested contract language at http://aim.cast.org/learn/policy/local.

Send physical copy to Bookshare to scan, proofread and add, but this takes 2-3 mos.
