Ubuntu Netbook Remix

Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UNR) is designed to allow you to get the most out of your

small-screen computer. Everything is conveniently arranged to allow you fast access

to your favorite applications so you can focus on getting online fast.

Go Home/Ubuntu

Wherever you are in UNR click on this to return to the main menu.

Favorites

Favorites is the area where you group your favorite applications for ease of access. It is simple to confi gure. For example to add BlackJack to your favorites menu you would:

1. Click on Games in the left hand menu.

2. Select and hold the Blackjack icon and drag itto Favorites.

3. Click on Favorites.

4. New icons will be marked with a star.

5. To remove an icon drag it from the Favorites screen to Remove Favorites on the right (this will not delete the application, you can fi nd it in the original location).

Launching applications in Favorites

1. Single click an icon to launch.

2. You know which application you are using by the context bar at the top of the screen.

3. To return to the main menu screen, click the Ubuntu icon on the top left hand side of the screen.

If you are familiar with the Ubuntu desktop and prefer to use it, or if you prefer a more conventional desktop then you can switch to Classic mode.

1. Go to Settings on the lower right of the screen.

2. Go to Other section.

3. Select Switch Desktop Mode.

4. Select Classic Mode.

1. Go to the Network Manager icon.

2. A list of available networks should appear.

3. Click on the network you wish to join.

4. Add any security information required.

The web browser gives you convenient web browsing with added security. The search box allows you to search the web directly from the toolbar. Tabbed browsing means you can have multiple pages open, but contained within the same browser window.

Setting preferences

1. Go to Edit ➞ Preferences.

2. Click on the section icons along the top.

3. Make your changes, then click Close.

The Main section allows you specify where to save downloaded fi les. The Tabs section allows you to set how tabbed browsing behaves. The Content section allows you to set fonts. The Privacy section allows you to set how to treat cookies. Many other settings are also included.

Using tabbed browsing

To open a new tab, go to File ➞ New Tab or type Ctrl+T. To close a tab, click the button on the tab or type Ctrl+W.

You can watch videos with Totem Movie Player and listen to music with the Rythmbox Music Player. Sound recorder to allow you to create and edit audio fi les.

1. Go to Sound & Video.

2. Choose Rhythmbox Music Player to play audio.

3. Choose Totem Movie Player to play video.

4. Choose Sound Recorder to record audio.

UNR is legally licensed to play mp3, VC1, AAC, Windows Media, MPEG4 and Flash formats plus all of the ‘free’ formats (.OGG, .WAV, .FLAC, GNASH and others).

To import photos from your camera:

1. Plug in and switch on the camera by placing it in review mode. Ubuntu should offer to import the photos that the camera contains.

2. Click Import Photos. You should then see a preview of the photos.

3. Choose a location to save your photos to, then click Import. The photos will be saved to your hard drive.

If Ubuntu does not detect your camera automatically:

1. Go to Graphics ➞ F-Spot Photo Manager.

2. Select File ➞ Import...

3. Select your camera as the Import Source.

4. Click Import.

F-Spot will also help you to perform basic retouching (e.g. rotating, cropping, colour adjustments).

F-Spot Photo Manager includes tools for you to organize, tag, view, and export your photos. You can export your photos directly to Flickr, Picasaweb, and Web Gallery.

The Pidgin messaging client allows you to use multiple types of instant messaging accounts and protocols all at once.

1. Go to Internet ➞ Pidgin Instant Messenger

(or go to Favorites).

2. The fi rst time Pidgin opens, an Accounts dialog will prompt you to add accounts. Click Add.

3. Select the Protocol of the account that you want to add, enter the required information, then click Save.

4. Close the Accounts dialog and, optionally, the Buddy List. You can access Pidgin by right-clicking on the Pidgin icon on the top panel.

Ubuntu comes with a wide variety of applications pre-installed and many more available in the Ubuntu software repository. To run an application select the Ubuntu icon in the top left. Select the appropriate category on the left hand side menu and choose an application. Some of the most frequently used include the following:

The Nautilus File Manager allows you to view, create, organize, and search your fi les and folders using an interface similar to a web browser. To open Nautilus, go to Home on the right hand side of the screen.

Using bookmarks

Bookmarks in Nautilus are similar to those in a web browser. Use the bookmarks feature to help you quickly open frequently used folders.

Creating a new folder

1. Browse to the location where you want to create the new folder.

2. Go to File ➞ Create Folder, or right-click and select Create Folder, or type Shift+Ctrl+N.

3. Type a name for the folder, then press Enter.
