➡ A cultural centre in the Asian renaissance of the 21st century.A New Asia Creative Hub. One of the top cities in the world to live, work and play, where the environment is conducive to creative-based and knowledge-based industries and talents. This is the vision for the creative industries as Singapore’s nation-building focuses on the contributions of the creative cluster to its economy.

➡ Supported by the Singapore government’s commitment to build hardware and software, the Creative Industries have seen the establishment of arts infrastructures and financial investment in talent development. From the the re-launched National Museum of Singapore and national icon, The Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, to funding for arts education including LASALLE’s award-winning city campus, Singapore’s cultural beacon is sending a clear signal of its artistic ambitions.

➡ In the Arts sector, Singapore started to put its name on the contemporary visual arts map in 2001 at the prestigious Venice Biennale and is now in its fifth year of participation. In 2006, Singapore took the leap into the big league and presented the inaugural Singapore Biennale, a first in South-east Asia and one of the biggest visual art exhibitions in Asia. In the performing arts, Singapore has attracted some of the world’s best through annual events including the Singapore Arts Festival. International premieres and acclaimed performances are brought to Singapore’s shores through the high-profile programmes of The Esplanade and other venues.

➡ In the area of Media, 10,000 new jobs are envisioned in digital media, film, animation and publishing; while the Design industry aims to make Singapore Asia’s leading design centre. These developments have resulted in global companies choosing Singapore as the Asian headquarters for their creative capabilities. Singapore is home to Lucasfilm Animation’s first and only animation studio outside California, BMW DesignWorks’ only design studio outside of California and Munich, and Phillips Design’s Asia Pacific headquarters for design research.

➡ As an aspiring artist, designer, performer or arts manager, there is no better time or place to be than in Singapore today, right in the midst of an exciting phase in the advancement of the creative industries for Asia.

SINGAPORE 2012

“Our objective is to double the GDP contribution of the Creative Industries to 6% by the year 2012. This will result in higher demand for creative talents and those who can contribute to meeting the growing market for creative products and services.”

What are we looking for? Applicants need to be selective in preparing the portfolio to ensure that it best represents their creative potential. The assessment of the portfolio is based on the following considerations:

• Creative development in the artwork/ project

• Observational skills – this means drawing what you see, rather than from your imagination

• Experimentation in medium and material exploration

• Overall clarity in your portfolio presentation

• Evidence of process - this means rough ideas, thoughts and sketches

What will happen on the Interview Day? When you arrive:

• You will be directed to the interview space and asked to lay out your portfolio.

• You will be interviewed by two lecturers from LASALLE as part of a group interview. • There will be FIVE other candidates in your group.

• While the lecturers are assessing your portfolio, you will be asked to discuss with the other candidates on the topic: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CREATIVE?

As a group, you should prepare some ideas for discussion later on in the interview. You may be asked to tell the group about an Artist, Designer or Art style, which interests

you. Before the interview, think about the idea of creativity.

• Once the lecturers have assessed the portfolios, all candidates will be asked to select their best piece of artwork from their own portfolio and talk about it for two minutes. You should say why you think it is your best piece and how you developed it.

• Once all the candidates have presented their artwork, the whole group will then discuss the topic: WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE CREATIVE?

• Finally, there will be an opportunity for you to ask questions about LASALLE and the Faculty of Foundation Studies.

• This group interview will last for 30 minutes.

The continued success of design houses such as Eley Kishimoto, Basso and Brooke and Jonathan Saunders highlights the importance of textile-led design in contemporary fashion. The Fashion Textiles programme seeks to promote the creation of textiles for fashion in South East Asia. An emphasis on experimentation through drawing, design and process encourages the development of creative contemporary textiles. Pattern drafting and garment construction, as well as visualisation and presentation skills, provide students with a solid grounding for their textile designs. Secondary research and Contemporary and Contextual Studies give students knowledge of the contemporary market and how their work is placed within it. Techniques such as embellishment, fabric manipulation and traditional or advanced digital printing methods support the development process and realisation of innovative fashion fabrics.

The first year is a general introduction to each of the main programmes of Fashion: Fashion Communication, Fashion Design, Fashion Management and Fashion Textiles. Students are introduced to the fundamental methods and techniques of

the fashion programme, designed to give them an overview of the context of current fashion design practice and to aid them in understanding the role of the designer in society. 55LASALLE PROGRAMME GUIDE • UNDERGRADUATE

The programme presents students with a unique opportunity to experience a broad cross-section of today’s musical practice in a collaborative and creative atmosphere. It blends vibrant cultures and diverse ideas found in Asia with a Western music discourse, developing your skills as a musician in three broad areas: Performance, Music Skills and the History of Music.

The Performance module consists of four components: Principal Study, Group Performance, Performance Workshop and Concert Practice. In Principal Study, you develop your skills through lessons on an instrument, voice or composition. Group Performance teaches you how to perform with other musicians in a wide range of small and large ensembles. Performance Workshop is a masterclass style component in which you perform and discuss elements of musicianship, repertoire and technique on a weekly basis.

The Music Skills module develops essential musical competencies through ear training, music theory and composition. The ear training component teaches you how to hear

music fluently; for example, to recognise chords and intervals and to notate melodies by ear. Music Theory concentrates on aspects of musical notation and harmony. In transcription, you will consolidate your theory and aural skills, transferring your understanding onto your own main study instrument through improvisation, playing by ear and other related skills that are found in all music. Advanced music skills in the final year focuses on necessary skills for each musical stream: in jazz – non-idiomatic improvisation, in popular music – performance style, and in classical music – orchestration.

Music history develops an understanding of the historical environment in which music has been created to provide a background understanding for the musical styles of today. This subject area is treated separately to the streams of jazz, pop and classical music as well as in combined classes where more general philosophical and historical ideas are explored in the history of music.
