IBM zSeries tools To support your IT objectives
2 3
More than ever, your mainframe software tools must offer real solutions, not challenges. More than ever, you need IBM.
If you’re like most IT managers today, your
job is tougher than ever. You’re managing
multiple systems with a small staff.
Servers have to run 24 hours a day, seven
days a week. You have mission-critical
applications to maintain and keep vital.
Tools must be reasonably priced with
value that far exceeds their expenses.
At IBM, we’re listening to your concerns.
IBM ® zSeries® software and
state-of-the-art tools provide the leading
technology that your mission-critical
applications demand. They can help you
increase productivity with self-configuring
and self-managing technology, as well
as automation of everyday database
and systems management tasks. Their
scalability and integration capabilities
can help reduce your installation and
administration costs while you grow
your business.
An affordable set of modern tools
Several years ago, in response to
customers’ demands for an alternative
to high-priced third-party software tools,
IBM got into the tools business—and
immediately altered the competitive
landscape. Since that time, we’ve grown
and learned. And today, the focus of our
affordable tools portfolio is on breadth
and depth.
In the IBM portfolio, you’ll find a robust
set of modern tools to help you achieve
new levels of productivity from every
aspect of your data center resources—
from hardware to software to IT staff.

These tools can also provide trend
analysis and forecasting information
to help your administrators with
system optimization.
How software and hardware work together
IBM offers complete zSeries solutions
that integrate hardware, software, and
required support and service.
A constant challenge for any IT
organization is better management of
rising mainframe costs—both hardware
and software. As the demand for new
workloads increases, it’s become
critical to manage assets, control costs,
and negotiate better pricing terms and
conditions. IBM is dedicated to helping
ensure that you can continue to evolve
your IT environment while also managing
expenses responsibly.
IBM is responding to these IT challenges
by providing organizations with an
extensive array of mainframe software
tools, utilities and pricing options, as
well as the experience gained through
more than 9,000 customer software
tools migrations.
Representing the interests of customers,
our dedicated team includes migration
experts, pricing specialists, pre-sales
support technicians and literally hundreds
of developers. This team can help you
meet the challenges you face—especially
those relating to total cost of ownership.
Making growth affordable
IBM understands that you want to
get your money’s worth out of your
infrastructure investments. IBM offers
pricing terms and conditions that make
growth affordable while bringing you
the same rich functionality and premier
service that is typical of our products.

When you purchase any One Time
Charge (OTC) IBM software tool, you pay
a one-time license fee, and an annual
subscription and support charge, that
entitles you to new versions and releases
of that tool.
Our software pricing model lets you
continue to increase the capacity of your
mainframes to support additional growth
and new applications. When determining
the cost, you receive credit for your
aggregated purchases and for the
product’s corporate-wide capacity.
Leveraging current investments
IBM understands that your ability to
leverage current technology investments
is an important cost consideration.
Our migration services experts are
available to help you move to IBM
hardware, software and tools, helping
you reduce conversion time through
customized migration planning and
management services. We’ve completed
more than 9,000 migrations, and our
customer satisfaction is high. Customers
like doing business with us because IBM
software is affordable and our migration
service offerings are very flexible.
The combination of our experience
and tools with your knowledge of your
systems creates a cost-effective team
that can help you ensure success. By
analyzing data from your systems and
working with members of your staff and
management, IBM migration specialists
can develop an action plan that helps
minimize disruptions to your operations.
During the migration process, we can
provide on-the-job training for efficient
skills transfer.

Who better to trust than IBM as
you seek tools to integrate with
your IBM infrastructure software
and more effectively manage your
business—particularly when our

IBM is your single, accountable
source, combining deep industry
and business process expertise with
market-leading technology.
IBM offers business and technology
solutions that increase productivity
through improvements in IT efficiency.
IBM protects your existing infrastructure
and helps ensure continuity of operations.
All of which enable you to focus on
growing your business profitably and
outperforming the competition.
Taking care of your tools
As IT departments learn to cope with
complicated infrastructures and adjust
to new and changing workloads, it
becomes increasingly difficult to add
value to the corporate bottom line while
balancing the expense of growth. The
key to deriving maximum value from
a zSeries investment, and to reducing
the total cost of ownership, lies in your
organization’s ability to better manage its
software portfolio.
Software asset management is a
discipline that your organization should
engage in every day, paying attention to
basic principles such as:
• Eliminating licenses for software that
is no longer in use.
• Consolidating purchasing across
an enterprise rather than at a
site-by-site level.
• Keeping track of current contracts,
their duration and when they need
to be renewed.
Knowing what’s on the horizon for your
business demands—and being proactive
and thoughtful about how software is
applied—can be useful in future contract
negotiations and can help manage costs.
Moreover, diligent asset management can
also help to prevent unforeseen crises
during upgrades or migrations.
The ultimate benefit of software
asset management lies in proactively
managing your organization’s total cost of
ownership. To help businesses gain
a better understanding of their total cost
of ownership and the impact that
the software portfolio has on that
bottom line, IBM offers a software
portfolio review and analysis service
to organizations worldwide.
