If there is one thing we Wisconsinites know how to do, it is to have fun. Sometimes even in spite of Mother Nature.

With football winding down and fall festivals and Thanksgiving already behind us much of this month’s fun is holiday focused. Brightly colored scarves, earmuffs and mittens against the background of warm woolen coasts seem like festive garb.

Many communities throughout Wisconsin boast holiday parades. A variety of businesses go all out decorating in holiday style and lighting their fireplaces for increased cozy atmosphere and ambiance to help patrons get in the spirit of gathering with one another for festive fun.

There are holiday shows to take in for all age groups, in just about any form and style of performing art you can imagine. There are even outdoor events for those ready to embrace Mother Nature’s will.

No matter which are the activities you choose to take part in this month, do not forget to bring friends or family along for the adventure. Fun increases exponentially with added participants. Make a memory that will be a story to fondly share for years to come. In the season of giving, making memories to cherish and share are arguably the most valuable gifts.

In this issue, we have plenty of

December fun and festive memory-making opportunities.

Contributor Peter Lindblad brings us two interviews with musical artists with vastly different styles before their upcoming Wisconsin tour dates. He shares his conversations with vocalist/guitarist James “JY” Young of American progressive rock giants Styx and Justin Jeffre, one quarter of the late 90’s Boy Band 98 Degrees.

Supper Club Guy- David Brierely takes us to Appleton’s George’s Steak House for a great meal before retiring to the piano bar for an after-dinner drink.

We have all of the details about Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra’s holiday performances in Stevens Point.

Contributor Susan Loken shares details for 15 fun ways to ring in 2019 in a variety of Wisconsin cities.

As always, our Events Calendar includes over 100 listings of things to do in Wisconsin this month with live links so details are just a click away.

So, read the issue, make your plans, then turn off your device and get out and do what you like to do for fun in Wisconsin this December. O&A

The CWSO continues its 70th season on December 1 and 2 by presenting “Holiday with Cantus.” Under the direction of Dr. Patrick Miles, the CWSO welcomes Cantus, acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States” (Fanfare). Cantus, an eight-member male vocal a cappella ensemble based out of Minneapolis, was founded on the ideals of collaborative music-making: The ensemble works together to reach new levels of artistic excellence, innovation and audience engagement. Their vision is to give voice to shared human experiences. Washington Post has hailed the Cantus sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power” and refers to the “spontaneous grace” of their music making. Cantus and CWSO will bring cheer to the start of December with unique and beautiful arrangements of holiday favorites.  Also featured on the program is the 2018 winner of Betty Frost Jenkins Concerto Competition,

Benjamin Bates, 17, who has been studying cello since the age of four. He will perform the Allegro from Concerto No. 1 for Cello in G minor, Op. 49, by Dmitri Kabalevsky.

The concerts will take place at

the Sentry Theater, 1800 Northpoint Drive, Stevens Point. Saturday’s performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s is at 4:00 p.m. Entertainment at intermission, “A Truly Tuba Christmas”, will be provided by the UW-Stevens Point Low Brass Department under the direction of Dr. Patrick Lawrence.

Tickets are available online at cwso.org/tickets, at the CWSO

office, located in the Smith Scarabocchio Art Museum, 800 Main Street, or at the door. Tickets may also be purchased by calling the CWSO office: 715-345-7726.

The CWSO, whose mission is to “enrich, engage, and educate through the power and performance of live music,” is affiliated with the College of Fine Art and Communication at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the City of Stevens Point. The CWSO season is sponsored in part by the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and the

National Endowment for the Arts. “Holiday with Cantus” is generously sponsored by Bernard and Mitzi Hlavac, with artistic support by Susan Gingrasso and Doug Henderson. Wisconsin Public Radio and WSAW are proud to be this season’s media sponsors.

Already a fan favorite in their hometown of Chicago, Styx was looking to grow its fan base in the early 1970s. Just to the north, they found a welcoming audience.

“Starting out, there was a bar in Milwaukee we’d go up to [called] Teddy’s, and we had a following there early on, so that gave us an idea

that we could get a toehold outside of Cook County, Illinois,” said Styx vocalist/guitarist James “JY” Young.

Located on Farwell Avenue, Teddy’s was one of the hottest rock clubs on Milwaukee’s hip East Side. Fans flocked to see Styx back then, giving the band hope that it could break through to the big time.

“Teddy’s on Farwell. That’s going back,” said Young. “It’s probably got

a different name now. It’s probably had a dozen different names since then, but it was in a hot little district, north from downtown.”

Young said the state has been good to the American progressive-rock giants, who will invade the Resch Center in Green Bay on Dec. 29, with a lineup featuring Young, vocalist/guitarist Tommy Shaw, vocalist/keyboardist Lawrence Gowan,

drummer Todd Sucherman and bassist Ricky Phillips. Bassist Chuck Panozzo, one of the founding members, along with brother John and singer/keyboardist Dennis DeYoung, plays with the band when he can. Young thinks this version of Styx is as strong as any in the band’s legendary history.

“The band is a great live band, that’s what we have remained and I think this is the best incarnation of the band that has ever taken the stage,” said Young.

Young isn’t knocking any of the other lineups in Styx’s illustrious past.

“God rest and God bless John Panozzo’s soul, the original drummer,” said Young. “He was a powerhouse and a crazy sort of guy, somewhat in the spirit of Keith Moon (of The Who) – not quite that crazy. Unfortunately, neither one are still around … he helped bring us to fame. John was a great drummer, but Todd Sucherman is, in some circles, considered the best drummer on the planet. And so it’s like getting under the hood of this race car, and I just love taking it out for a drive.”

Sucherman’s versatility sets him apart, while Gowan’s gregarious showmanship and onstage charisma provide more fuel for Styx’s fire.

“Dennis (DeYoung) was sort of a serious front man, and then Lawrence is just a crazed combination of Mick Jagger and Freddie Mercury and about a half dozen others,” laughed Young.

“And he draws on all of them. Somebody said he dances like Jimmy Cagney (laughs).”

Young called Phillips “a phenomenal rock bassist,” noting his work with Journey’s Jonathan Cain in The Babys and Bad English, and with Coverdale-Page. And Young added, “Tommy Shaw is still Tommy bleeping Shaw and I’m still James Young.”

If any band could be forgiven for resting on its laurels, it’s Styx. Formed in 1972 in the Windy City,

the band grinded it out on the road and made solid records, before finally striking gold with 1977’s Grand Illusion. That was the first of four straight multimillion-selling platinum albums, including 1978’s Pieces of Eight, 1979’s Cornerstone and 1981’s blockbuster Paradise Theatre. Styx was the first group to ever release four albums in a row that sold three million copies each.

Being on the A&M record label for Grand Illusion gave Styx the confidence they were about to make a breakthrough.

“That it would be as successful as it was, I don’t think any of us could have believed or dreamt

that,” said Young. “But, A&M was a phenomenal record company, and the year before, they had sold eight million copies of Frampton Comes Alive, so we knew they had the muscle to get these things done and they had the motivation to get these things done, and they had taken a very strong interest in us and we had changed managers. There was a sense that this one had long legs.”

Young said Styx’s recognizable, unique vocal weavings helped those records rise up the charts. He also pointed to Shaw’s songwriting on such classics as “Crystal Ball” and “Fooling Yourself (Angry Young Man)” making a lasting impact on listeners, including former Green Bay Packers assistant coach and NFL star Kevin Greene.

“I’ve had a few people say that,” said Young. He added that “Come Sail Away” has left its mark on listeners’ hearts and minds, as have DeYoung’s famed ballads.

Young isn’t nostalgic for the old days, when Styx was a young band trying to make its way in the music business.

“I can’t say that I miss much,” said Young. “It’s all part of becoming who we have become now. We learned a lot of lessons about what we could and couldn’t do. I mean, we’re talking about 1974 or 1975, which was 44 years. Then, I could probably sing four or five notes higher than I can now. On a really good day, I can still get to them, but on most days, they’re not available to me. But back then it was second nature. So, I think my singing voice is the only thing

I have work a whole lot harder. My playing has gotten better since then, but a singing voice requires attention.”

Styx has always paid close attention to its soaring vocal harmonies, part and parcel of their signature sound. They sounded as sublime as ever on 2017’s ambitious concept record The Mission, studio album No. 16 for Styx. It’s about the first manned mission to Mars in 2033, as Shaw and longtime collaborator Will Evankovich created and crafted the compelling, awe-inspiring storyline together. Young has a degree in mechanical and aerospace engineering, and he’s

amazed by Shaw and Evankovich’s storytelling on The Mission. “I’d have been afraid to come up with that,” said Young, even though he mentioned how he helped bring “Come Sail Away,” one of Styx’s most enduring hits, to life.

Sonically, The Mission is a wild ride, rocketing through the stratosphere with the straight-ahead, ballsy lead single “Gone Gone Gone” and a dark

and heavy “Red Storm,” and wandering the Milky Way with the starry “Locomotive,” floating on the melodic “Radio Silence” and ending with the hopeful, captivating title track.

“I am sort of more the technical perfectionist musically,” said Young.”Tommy is more the songwriting lyricist who can find the humanity in a storyline and therefore, make it into a lyrical, melodic, verbal song lyric.”

The whole album’s theme was inspired by NASA discovering with its deep space probe that Pluto had a fifth moon and there was a contest to name it.

“I guess the No. 1 vote getter was ‘Vulcan,’ but there was already a celestial body called that, so the second biggest vote getter was ‘S-T-Y-X,’ so we actually have the fifth moon of Pluto named ‘S-T-Y-X,’ which is from Greek mythology, as all these things are,” said Young. “But, it also happens to be the name of this rock band. The people of NASA are fans of the band, and they actually took our ‘Gone Gone Gone’

song and put their own footage to it, because what it’s really about is, you feel that pressure and break through the atmosphere and we’ll be gone, gone, gone. It really is, I suppose, the ballad of the first trip to Mars.”

“Gone Gone Gone” evolved from a guitar riff Young said that Shaw and Gowan heard him noodling on. Young said it was inspired by one of his guitar heroes, Jeff Beck.

Styx is ready to give concertgoers an earful of the new material, while also rummaging through its vast catalog to roll through the hits. It’s taken some time to bring The Mission to life in a live setting.

“Well, we’re doing it in dribs and drabs now,” said Young. “Even last summer, we played a track or two, because that record is obviously over a year old now, but we are going to finally perform it in its entirety in the order which the songs appear on the record. We’re going to do that in Las Vegas, and we’ll see how it all comes out. I mean, people are slowly but surely warming up to it. This is the best reviewed record that Styx ever made. It’s not the best selling, but nobody’s selling like they did back in the day. Grand Illusion sold six million copies when it came out, one million of which were on 8-track tape.”

Critics have raved about The Mission’s balance of vintage Styx elements and new tricks. Young said the vocal harmonies on the record are as good as they’ve ever been. It’s been challenging for classic-rock acts like Styx to adjust to recent sea changes in the music industry, though.

“It helps to have a sense of dynamics, soft and loud. That’s what makes for a great musical performance...

out and About Wi deCeMBer 2018 11

S T Y X

“We made an album of all-new material back in 2003 called Cyclorama, but we … we got zero traction with it, and then later that year, we got invited to play the ‘Crossroads Guitar Festival,’” said Young. “And just because [Eric] Clapton played with The Beatles and George Harrison, or whatever, we did a version of ‘I Am the Walrus,’ and that actually caught on and that actually is the highest-charting airplay thing we got in terms of radio airplay across the United States. ‘I Am the Walrus’ was No. 2 on the classic rock chart, but … the Internet and social media is such a big part, much more so than it was before the iPhone came into being 10 or 12 years ago, so now it’s just word of mouth. Radio is not nearly as important as it was. It’s still meaningful, certainly, but it was the only thing we really had before MTV, and then television became the only vehicle, and even that sort of faded when people could stream anything they wanted online, with YouTube or whatever. So, everything evolves, and I think finally the evolution is coming back to help us, because I’m seeing a lot more young people in the audience and I’m hearing stories of young people rejecting the music of [today] … well, not really rejecting it, but finding value in our music. If someone tells you [about something] you can immediately access it and immediately, probably, go to one of those music services – Spotify or Apple music – and listen to it and watch bands’ live videos and maybe go to a web site, so you don’t have to wait around. If somebody tells you about something, you can go and get deeply

into it in the space of a few hours. And I think that has benefitted us, because we were very different.”

That special something that made Styx special is still there. While he remains concerned about the business aspect of Styx, Young is more excited about getting out and playing live. The stage is where Styx has always felt most at home. And Young can’t wait to perform those Styx songs that have stood the test of time, as well as new favorites.

“Well, let’s see … we start with ‘Gone Gone Gone’ and then go right into ‘Blue Collar Man’ – that’s always a biggie,” said Young. “And then ‘Come Sail Away’ is always huge. ‘Renegade’ is always huge. ‘Blue Collar Man’ gets a great reaction. Jimmy Fallon was using that for two weeks straight. He was 7 years old when it was first released. He sort of glommed onto it and even reshot the video with him in it … we have fun throughout the set and I like the fact that we drop down to ‘Crystal Ball’ and then jump into ‘Rockin’ the Paradise,’ which is up-tempo … it helps to have a sense of dynamics, soft and loud. That’s what makes for a great musical performance to make it intimate and then makes the next time you hit a big chord that makes it all the more powerful. That’s the beauty of a ‘Come Sail Away’ or a ‘Crystal Ball’ is it starts quietly – and thank you Led Zeppelin for starting that trend with ‘Stairway to Heaven’ – but it’s the fact that a song can build into something great, but start out real captivating, I think that’s what we always aim for.”

It’s a formula that’s made Styx superstars. O&a

98° heats up Christmas

By PEtER LinDBLaD

98° came of age in an era when rival boy bands, such as The Backstreet Boys and NSYNC, set out to conquer the world of pop.

Competition for top spots on the charts was fierce, and juicy reports of feuds between the hunky vocal-harmony groups were stoked by tabloid press outlets hungry for controversy. Justin Jeffre, of 98°, believes it was all blown way out of proportion.

“I think mostly, the whole ‘boy band vs. boy band’ thing was put on by everybody outside who wanted there to be this fight

or this competition, and I think on some level, there was obviously some sort of competition, because in order to be in the music business, you’re competing against not just boy bands, but with everybody,” said Jeffre. “We were going on the chart and ‘Una Noche’ got to No. 2 because Madonna was No. 1. So, you’re competing with a lot more than just the other groups.”

All these years later, Jeffre says 98° and the members of NSYNC and The Backstreet Boys get along famously, having already established a long and enduring friendship with their heroes Boyz II

Men. And they’ve gotten to know New Kids on the Block, whose career served as the template for boy band pop domination in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.

“You can learn from them and learn from each other, and we know how hard those guys have had to work, and they know how hard we’ve worked, too,” said Jeffre. “So, there’s a certain amount of respect everybody has.”

With the holiday season upon us, the Ohio-based quartet of Jeffre, Jeff Timmons and brothers Nick and Drew Lachey are in the midst of their 36-date “98° at Christmas 2018” tour, which concludes Dec. 21 in Appleton at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center.

Electrifying live, with their dazzling showmanship and R&B-inspired, four-part harmonies sounding just as smooth as ever, 98° went out on a similar Christmas tour last year, playing their hits and Yuletide favorites to full houses across the land in support of Let It Snow, their first Christmas album since 1999’s multi-platinum selling This Christmas. Their luxurious version of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” was a highlight of the performances.

In October 98° released a 2-CD reissue of Let It Snow, pairing the Christmas favorites of the original album with 13 of the band’s biggest hits, including “I Do,” “Una Noche” and “Hardest Thing.” And they have some new surprises up their sleeves for their shows this time around. Jeffre’s favorite moment, however, will always remain a classic.

“For me personally – we don’t

like to give away too much – one of my favorite Christmas songs and arrangements is ‘Silent Night’ by The Temptations,” said Jeffre. “As we were discussing both Christmas albums, that was always near the top of my list of things that I thought would be a good fit for us. And so,

we do that in the show, and there’s kind of a Motown section, which is a big part of our influence. Whether it was Boyz II Men or The Temptations and Four Tops, we were very much influenced by, and also lucky enough to be signed by, Motown, so we feel it is part of our DNA as artists.”

From the start, 98° displayed a soulful, more R&B-influenced aesthetic than their contemporaries.

“We started at a time when there wasn’t really even the term ‘boy band,’” said Jeffre. “I mean, of course, we remembered when New Kids on the Block were out and they were kind of the original model for the boy band, but we were really looking at Boyz II Men. When we were coming up, they were in their heyday and on MTV, you would see grunge music and you would see gansta rap and there wasn’t much in the way of pop except Boyz II Men and Mariah

Carey and we loved that sound.”Motown liked what it initially

heard from the group, which Timmons formed in Los Angeles, even though its members were based in Ohio. Figuring out how to market them wasn’t so easy for the label.

“As we got signed to Motown, they weren’t exactly sure what to do with us,” said Jeffre. “They actually wanted us to be more R&B like a Jodeci than Boyz II Men, but we always knew where we fit and where we felt comfortable. And then all of a sudden, the pop thing started to kick off with the Spice Girls and Hanson and then we came out right around the time The Backstreet Boys did. And so, over time, we learned to embrace the term ‘boy band,’ because now we’re middle-aged men (laughs) and also because we recognize the benefits that came along with the whole pop wave.”

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Timmons left college and sports behind to head out West to pursue music. A former student of the School for Creative and Performing Arts gave Timmons Nick Lachey’s name, and Lachey flew to L.A. to meet up with Timmons. They decided to start a boy band, as Lachey also invited Jeffre, who had attended the SCPA with Nick and was studying history at the University of Cincinnati, to join forces. Nick’s brother, Drew, was soon brought aboard as well.

“Ultimately, Nick and I had a friend who moved out to L.A. and met Jeff and they had some things going and we were always passion about doing it and we dropped out of school to go give it a shot,” said Jeffre.

“We figured we could always come back to finish our college, but we wanted to strike while we were young enough and didn’t have too much to lose. And we got lucky, and Drew, of course, came in as kind of the final piece of the puzzle that solidified everything with the whole group.”

Growing up, Jeffre was baptized in the music of Motown and other influences.

“Motown was a big thing,” said Jeffre. “We heard classic rock and classic R&B, and then going to a performing arts school I got to go to

school with kids from different parts of town and different backgrounds, so I was exposed to sort of more modern R&B. And that’s when rap and hip-hop started to come into play, and … if you look at our catalog, you kind of hear those influences in there.”

Unlike other boy bands, 98° wasn’t a sort of dream team of young male vocalists thrown together by record-label executives in hopes of cashing in big. Coming together independently, 98° had to take an unconventional approach to getting noticed. So, they

took a page out of the Boyz II Men playbook for success.

“With them being our biggest idols, their story was they got backstage for Bell Biv Devoe, so we thought, ‘We should try to get backstage if we can,’” recalled Jeffre. “We got to sing by the gates and there was a gal from a radio station there and so she liked us. She brought us back and we managed to sing on the radio and then the show was starting, so we went out front to watch the show, and then we were like, ‘Man, we’ve got to get backstage.’”

Things didn’t quite go as planned, but they were rewarded for their hustle.

“So, we managed to sneak backstage and we met a couple of people while we were back there before the show,” said Jeffre. “We didn’t actually get to meet Boyz II Men, but we did end up meeting a guy who ended up becoming our manager that was working with Montell Jordan and his whole crew, who’d opened up the show. So, we were fortunate enough to work with Montell Jordan and his band and his dancers, and they helped us put together a demo and create a little show, and one of them passed the demo on to the vice president at Motown Records and they brought us in and signed us on the spot.”

That was a surreal moment for Jeffre.“It really was a dream come true.

I mean it was a dream come true and it was almost like a dream that was too big to even dare to dream,” said Jeffre. “They had never even had a white vocal group like ours before in their history. We learned later that there was a rock band called Rare Earth in the ‘70s [that was on Motown], but other than that, we were the only white artists on the label. And then, of course, some of our biggest influences – whether

it was Stevie [Wonder] or the Temptations and of course, Boyz II Men – that was the label with all of our favorite artists.”

Early on, 98° was afforded the chance of a lifetime in getting to work with Stevie Wonder. The experience

left an impression on Jeffre.“A lot of times they say, ‘You don’t

want to meet the people you look up to because they will disappoint you,’” said Jeffre. “Well, that wasn’t the case with Stevie Wonder. He couldn’t have been more gracious and kind and just cool to be around. And we got to perform on ‘The Tonight Show’ for the very first time with Stevie and they were just going to, after the performance, have Stevie come over and do an interview, and he insisted that we get to come over to the couch with him and include

us. And then we would also run into him, whether it was New York or L.A., and he was just so generous with his time.”

From there, 98° exploded onto the scene, selling 10 million records between 1997 and 2002 and

rocketing to the top of the charts with the single “Thank God I Found You” with Mariah Cary and Joe. Teaming with Stevie Wonder, they recorded a song together called “True to Your Heart” for the 1998 animated Disney film “Mulan,” setting the stage for their biggest triumph, 1998’s Motown release 98° and Rising. That record, powered by top-five hits “I Do,” “The Hardest Thing” and “Because of You,” sold four million copies.

Then came 2000’s Revelation on Universal Records, which moved two million units and

soared all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard 200, yielding the smash-hit singles “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche),” “My Everything” and “The Way You Want Me To.”

It was an artistically rewarding period for Jeffre and 98°, as they were able to showcase their songwriting abilities – something similar groups didn’t get to do.

“Early on as an artist, you don’t have a whole lot of control,” said Jeffre. “So, on the first CD, we just had one song that we got to co-write, and then on the next one,

9 8 ° C H R I S T M A S

we got to do a lot more writing. In this business, you don’t always get the credit, but we were fortunate enough to grow as artists – not only as singers, but also as songwriters – and we all get to enjoy that part of business as well.”

Caught up in a whirlwind of tours and press engagements, the stress of the business took its toll. Soon after the 9/11 tragedy, 98° took a much-needed break that lasted longer than anticipated.

“I think part of it was we just lived on the road for years and in this business, at least for us back then, it seemed like you couldn’t ever get a day off,” said Jeffre.

Some members had kids. Others became involved in other projects, as Nick Lachey put out a series of solo albums and famously starred in the reality series “Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica,” with his then-wife, Jessica Simpson.

“I think everybody desired to have a life outside of the group, and then the next thing you know, a decade flies by because you get caught up in life and I certainly don’t think any of us expected to be apart that long,” said Jeffre. “There wasn’t any sort of any major fight or falling out.”

As for Jeffre, he got involved in politics, even going so far as to run for mayor of Cincinnati.

“I always felt I was given so much by my community and the opportunity to go to a performing arts school, where I was able to take music lessons and get exposed to things I never would have been able to,” said Jeffre. “I didn’t come from a very wealthy family. There were no musicians really in my family. It gave me the opportunity to be able to do what I am doing now, so it was mostly a desire to want to give back and be a part of the community … in Cincinnati, we have a unique little non-partisan election, so I just wanted to get engaged but not necessarily join a political party, and be a part of the conversation about the direction of our city. It’s something I’ve been able to do the last six years. I’ve worked for the Greater Cincinnati Homeless Coalition, and until recently, just because we’ve been getting busier and busier as a group, I’ve sort of had to step away from that, but it’s just an example of how I like to stay involved in the community.”

Sorting out everyone’s schedules

was the biggest challenge in reuniting. When the stars aligned again, it was like nothing had changed.

“It was like riding a bike. And you didn’t really know,” said Jeffre. “I mean, we all walked into the room wondering how this was going to go, and it felt very natural and we still had the same chemistry. And we had a greater appreciation, and we also felt I think less pressure. We were all more experienced as performers and singers, and we also had more respect for each other, and being away, you appreciate things more when they kind of go away for a little while.”

After an appearance at the Mixtape Festival in Hershey, Pennsylvania, 98° hooked up with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men on a 2013 tour. Three years later, 98° headlined the My2K tour. Jeffre is enjoying the ride.

“For us, I think we’re in a great place where we’re having more fun than we’ve ever had doing this,” said Jeffre. “But, we also have been able to find some balance with having lives outside the group and having our own individual projects, [while] also still being able to take time to what we really love, which is making music.” O&a

Since the 1930s, the Appleton area has had a quality dining option in George’s Steak House. Originally opened by George Fiedler, the supper club has undergone multiple changes in ownership as well as renovations over the past 80 years, but it maintains its original charm.

After running his namesake restaurant for 20-odd years, Fiedler

sold the supper club to Dod and Eloise Guyon in 1960. The couple soon renovated and expanded the restaurant, and operated it successfully until they retired in 1973, selling it to Lou Neuville.

Three years later, Neuville sold the business to the couple who still owns it to this day, Chuck and Edie Quimby. Edie had worked at George’s since 1967, starting as a waitress and moving her way up

to management. The Quimbys’ son, Brad, worked at the supper club throughout high school and college. After graduating in 1985, he threw his weight behind running this successful business.

Located at the intersection of South Memorial Drive and Gardners Row just south of the Fox River, George’s is a relatively unassuming building from the outside. With olive green siding

and a brown roof, the most distinguishing feature is the cylindrical, stone-sided entrance with a conical roof. This, along with the Old English style font spelling out the supper club’s name, gives the slight impression of a medieval castle right in the middle of Appleton.

Open the appropriately heavy wooden door (seriously - castle), and step into this classic supper club’s entry. Few restaurants I’ve been to have an actual coat check, so the fact that George’s includes this classic touch definitely adds style points. Check your coat with the friendly attendant, make your way to the host station to check in, then find a spot at the bar to grab a drink.

Despite having many fantastic features, the highlight of George’s - for me at least - is the fact that the bar area contains a 125-year-old Steinway grand piano. Even better, the Quimby family makes sure that it’s doling out melodies each and every weekend. According to the family, this is the only piano bar in the area.

The evening starts out with some smooth, quiet jazz, and winds up to a more lively state after dinnertime. The supper club’s website even includes a schedule of performances, and mentions that a variety of musical genres are covered, “from Sinatra to classical; country to recent hits.”

The ambiance of the restaurant is up to the supper club standard, with low mood lighting, wood paneled walls, deep red carpeting, and a bar with a patterned wooden edge and padded bar stools. The piano

S u p p e r C l u b s

22 www.DoWhatYoulikeToDo.com

actually doubles as an extension of the bar, adding seating capacity for crowded evenings.

This time of year, the supper club’s interior is decked out in holiday decorations and lights, making it even cheerier and cozier than normal.

Once you’ve soaked in some music, some cocktails, and the ambiance of the bar, your table is ready and you can head to one of the dining rooms. There is an upper dining room, on the same level as the bar, and a lower dining room, which is sunk a few steps below. The lower dining room may remind you a bit of a retro sunken living room, adding to the classic charm.

The table settings are quite classy, with custom paper placemats displaying a rendering of the building’s exterior, as well as the grand piano and the supper club’s logo. And the dishes look like the sort of china that only comes out of the hutch for special occasions.

Now it’s time to check out the menu. The supper club appetizers are all there: shrimp cocktail, onion rings, breaded mushrooms, cheese curds (as always - yes, please). There are also a few out-of-the-ordinary additions such as coconut shrimp and fried pickles.

The rest of the menu offers an impressive variety. Again, the supper club standards are present: salads; seafood, including fish, shrimp, scallops, crab, and lobster; pasta dishes; an entire page dedicated to

steaks (this is a steak house, after all), from ribeyes, to prime rib, to tenderloins, sirloins, and everything in between. There are also dishes with duck, lamb, and pork chops. There is even a separate children’s menu, making George’s more kid-friendly than some other supper clubs. And, of course, there’s a separate Friday fish fry menu.

Order your appetizers, entrees, and more drinks if you’re still thirsty or craving another delicious old fashioned. No matter what you decide on, here’s a heads-up: you won’t be leaving hungry.

Included with complete dinners at George’s are dinner rolls and butter, soup, salad, choice of potato, and - notably different from most supper clubs - a trip to the appetizer bar. While salad bars are a supper club staple, George’s offers an appetizer bar instead, which includes veggies, dips, spreads, and pasta salads, among other selections.

All of these pre-meal snacks are quite tasty, especially if you’re hungry and/or have the munchies from one or three too many cocktails. But, the main course leaves nothing to be desired - each item is cooked to perfection and served hot and fresh from the kitchen.

You have full permission to devour your food, but please try to use your manners; this is a classy place, after all. If you somehow managed to save room for sweets (there’s no shame in taking some of your main course home for lunch

the next day or, more realistically, a late-night snack tonight), check out the dessert menu.

In addition to an assortment of ice cream after-dinner drinks, there is a selection of treats to finish the evening off right. Perhaps a refreshing strawberry shortcake, complex tuxedo mousse cake, or a decadent tiramisu would hit the spot? If all else fails to entice, there’s always the classic ice cream sundae.

Once dessert has been accomplished, or if you’re having an after-dinner drink, head out to

the bar and sing along to the lively piano music. I mean, you don’t have to sing along (and maybe some of us - yours truly included - shouldn’t), but there’s never a dull moment at a piano bar. And with a history as long and rich as this one, it’s sure to be a good night.

If you haven’t already, don’t forget to join our Supper Club VIP group; you’ll be entered in our monthly drawing for a $50 gift card to an area supper club. As always there will be plenty more Supper Club fun to come. O&a

Dec 4 - Dec 23 • 1:00 pm & 8:00 pmLet Me Be Frank Productions’ 19th all-original Christmas comedy musical,

“Schroeder’s Christmas.” This year we go back to the 1930s at Schroeder’s Department store in Two Rivers. It’s the most wonderful time of the year — unless

you’re the Schroeder brothers. The band of brothers and owners of the store, Neil, Hillary and Gary Schroeder, have fallen on hard times as they try to keep their family business thriving. Times have gotten so tough that they’re even requiring their employees Lisa, Amy and newbie, Sarah to work on Christmas Eve! Maybe a salesman by the name of Clarence Jingle will be the answer to their prayers.

Clarence is trying to sell the store employees on a newfangled toy called a “slinky” — apparently, it’s going to be all the rage and might help Schroeder’s keep their

doors open for years to come.
