Admin and Finance စမခန႔ခြေရး ႏင ဘ႑ာေရး ဌာန

The administration and finance teams have been busy this quarter in particular with planning and logistics for two important events on Mote Oo's calendar. The 4th Annual International English Language Teaching Conference at Mandalay University took place on Friday 22nd and Saturday 23rd June. The National Network for Educational Reform (NNER)’s biannual conference was held in Yangon on the same weekend. Both are wonderful events and are attended by lots of interested educators ordering books and asking about our services. This weekend is a highlight on our yearly calendar – not only because we have connected with teachers in the adult education sectors from across Myanmar but also we sell plenty of books!

providing only Introduction to Teaching training. Mote Oo, then, provided an Intensive Training of Trainers (ITOT) on "Introduction to Teaching" for the first time in Yangon. The 10 day training was from 4 June to 15 June. We had the pleasure of having teacher trainers from 6 partner organizations of Mote Oo and 13 interested teachers who applied from Yangon were also selected. Participant of ITOT are trainers from different places in Myanmar and are

There are fundamental skills and knowledge that a new inexperienced teacher require to start working in a classroom confidently and not be lost at it. Mote Oo Education has been building such foundations in many teachers across Myanmar through a 5 day "Introduction to Teaching" training course developed by Mote Oo teacher training department. However, in light of the ubiquity of such demand across Myanmar, Mote Oo thinks that it is more effective and sustainable to train trainers rather than

committed to cascade the introduction to teaching training to different places in Myanmar. 4 of the participants already planned to cascade the Introduction to Teaching Training within a month from the completion of ITOT and Mote Oo will be providing close coaching support as they train. ITOT was also found to be greatly demanded. MOte Oo is planning to organize more ITOT courses in both Yangon and cities of other states and regions with Mote Oo partner organizations.

စာသငၾကားမႈ အေတြ႔အႀက မရေသးေသာ ဆရာ/ဆရာမမားအေနႏင စာသငခနးတြငးသ႔ မမကယကယ မမ ယၾကညမႈရစြာ ဝငေရာကၿပး အေျခခ လပေဆာငဖြယမားက ပငႏငစြာ လပေဆာငတတေနရနအတြက မရမျဖစလအပေသာ အတျမစမားရသည။ အဆပါ သငၾကားေရးကၽြမးကငမႈ အတျမစမားက ႏငငအႏ႔မ ဆရာ/မ မားတြင တညေဆာကရနအတြက အေျခခ သငၾကားေရး ကၽြမးကငမႈ မတဆကဟသည ၅ ရကတာ သငရးတစခက မခဥးပညာေရး သငတနးဌာနမမ ေရးဆြၿပး ပ႔ခေနျခငးလညးရပါသည။

ITOT အဆပါ သငတနးတြင တကေရာကခၾကသတ႔မာ ေနာကခ အသးသးက လာေရာကၾကသမားျဖစၿပး တငးႏင ျပညနယစတြင သြားေရာက ေလကင သငၾကားပ႔ခရန ရညမနးထားၾကသမားလညးျဖစၾကပါသည။ ITOT သငတနးၿပးခေသာ ဆရာ/မ မားအနက ၄ ဥးတ႔မာ အေျခခ သငၾကားေရး ကၽြမးကငမႈ သငတနးက တစလအတြငး ျပနလည ပ႔ခၾကမညျဖစၿပး မခဥးမာ သြားေရာကၾကညရႈ ကညမႈ လပေပးရနလညး ျပငဆငထားၿပး ျဖစပါသည။

ႏငငသား ႏင ၿငမးခမးေရး ပညာဌာန follow-up training of trainers. We also facilitated a workshop on communication skills at the Mandalay University, during their English Language Teaching Conference. As a cross-over between our education for peace work and civic education, we are currently also writing new training materials on social cohesion. To do this job even better, we learned from experts, by observing a social cohesion training in May, organised by the Centre for Social Integrity. Furthermore, we are developing a new civic education project with youth activists in Shan State, aimed at addressing social injustices. We have organised six workshops in three different locations and met with several additional community-based organisations, who are working to improve their communities. We are deeply impressed by the work that they do and hope to launch this new civic education project with them very soon! The second quarter has been hectic but very exciting in the Civic and Peace Education Department! The quarter started with an open air book launch event at the French Institute in Yangon, to celebrate the release of our textbook series in peace education. About 250 people came to the event and enjoyed music by Side Effect; Saw Poe Khwar, the One Love Band and Lin Htet; PhoeSoe and HtetKhineSoe. Right on the day after the book launch event, Mote Ooorganised a 3-day workshop for all interested members of the nationwide Education for Peace Working Group (EPWG). 60 education for peace actors from 40 organisations attended and together we made many important decisions on how to continue our work to promote peace through education in Myanmar. We have also done a number of trainings. In Chin State and Magway Region we observed community trainings facilitated by students at the PhaungDawOo Pre-College Programme. In June, we visited PDO-PCP again, to deliver a

support more monastic education actors in Mandalay and Yangon and are exploring ways of supporting and showing solidarity with dialogue and education actors focused on Rakhine State. Besides all of this, our team has also been trained in monitoring and evaluation theory and tools, and asked lots of trainees and organisations for feedback on the training work we do and the books we produce. Thanks to Bop Htaw Education; Ramonnya; the Mon Youth Educator Organisation; the Mon Youth Progressive Organisation; alumni from the Global Border Studies; alumni from the PhaungDawOo Pre-College Programme; and teachers in Loikaw for participating in our evaluation process! Thanks also to everyone else – partners and colleagues – who contributed with input – we deeply appreciate it. We now have Vengsang Thong, a new intern, with us. Life Skills Project

Secondly, critical thinking in the classroom training is successfully done at Studer Trust in Mandalay from 21st -26th

May. Participants are 23 primary schools monistic teachers from different monasteries in Mandalay during 6 days training. Teachers thought that critical thinking skills, growth mindset and questioning techniques are new skills that they have learned from training and they will be adapted and applied in their classroom teaching activities to be able to improve learners’ critical thinking skills.

The very first life skills training had been started at Bop Htaw Education Empowerment Program in Mawlamyaing from 5th-9th April. Altogether 28 participants had actively participated in discussion, enjoyed in doing activities and asking questions during 5 days training. They would like to have more training about resilience, stress management and personal leadership because it is very useful to apply not only in their professional but also in their personal life.

Life Skills program coordinator attempts to introduce and distribute the final version of Young Adult Success book to partner organizations in July. Moreover, she starts to make a training plan for life skills training short course based on Young Adult Success Book. Publication In recent months we have been working on completing outstanding projects. The Myanmar version of Histories of Burma now nearly has a teacher's book, and the Myanmar version of ASEAN is also almost ready. Additionally, we published The New Teacher 4: Assessment. Next to come out in English will be Young Adult Success (in July) and Social Science and the Humanities (in November). In addition, we worked with the Karuna Center for Peacebuilding to publish a handbook on community dialogue in both English and Myanmar.

Curriculum Curriculation staff have been heads down writing and editing. We are racing the teachers and students at Naushawng Community School to get them the draft chapters before they need to teach them, and are getting useful feedback. Social Science and the Humanities is being piloted at several Technological Universities around the country, and We have started developing an English language series, which will take hundreds of years to finish. Poe Pyit Soe attended KRCEE-IHE's curriculum review workshop in May, and we are now working on supplementary video material for the social studies teachers in IHE schools. In June, Katie attended a peacebuilding curriculum workshop in Singapore with Sky School, an initiative to provide a global, accredited high school qualification for people without access to state education. Currently, Sky School runs courses in social entrepreneurship in refugee camps and schools in Greece, Jordan and Kenya, and they will add a peacebuilding course in July. Moh Moh

This is Moh Moh. Moh Moh is a third-year student at the Chiang Mai University, majoring in Social Sciences and Development. MohMoh is doing her internship at Mote Oo as part of ‘Cooperative Studies’ course required by the University. For fourteen weeks, she will be working with the Teacher Training Department. She did her internship at Mote Oo last year and she is joining Team Mote Oo again this year after she was commented as a natural trainer. MohMoh loves teaching but doesn’t want to become a teacher who teaches five days a week, four weeks a month and so on at a school. It is different here at Mote Oo; she still does what she loves and at the same time she experiences new things as she travels for trainings. During her internship, MohMoh is learning many things from stationery-sorting to teacher-training and she hopes to work with Mote Oo in other areas after she has completed her studies.

Kaung Myat has just completed a program in Liberal Arts at the Pre-Collegiate Program of Yangon. He has been doing an internship with Mote Oo working in the Publications Department to create infographics and illustrations. He has been especially helpful with developing materials for the draft of Mote Oo's Research Skills book. In August, he will be heading to the United States for his study in Arts and Technology. Vengsang Thong is from Naga, which is located on the India-Burma border. He is a third-year Myanmar Major student from Dagon University, Yangon. He is interested in politics and studied peace and conflict in Global Border Studies Institute, a university-level program in Thailand. He was employed in Mote Oo peace education team as an intern in May 2018. He is participating actively in lesson planning and contributing peace trainings to local communities and helping in Monitoring and Evaluation process cooperating with Mote Oo peace education team. He believes in peaceful coexistence among ethnic diversities and is really passionate about building a peaceful society through mutual respect based on human rights. He is enthusiastic to contribute his experience and knowledge to his society, learn new experiences from different cultures, and equip himself to catch up with the ever-changing world.

Phaung Daw Oo’s Pre-College Program (PDO-PCP) was founded in 2012. It is a one year post-secondary course with an annual intake of 24 gifted students with leadership abilities. Most students come from PDO's monastic primary and high school systems, and have had teaching experience in these schools, which have over 6000 students in a huge campus in Mandalay.

PCP aims to provide further education to enable students to develop into engaged community leaders, able to contribute to the democratic development of Myanmar and its community institutions. The program is also designed to help connect graduates to educational opportunities at foreign universities. Over the last couple of years, Mote Oo have been working with PCP on curriculum and providing Peace Education trainings of trainers for their graduating students planning to take up peace training in their home communities.

Wide Horizons is a 2 year organizational development program established in 2006, in Mae Sot, Thailand. Every year, WH takes 24 participants, all employees from community-based organizations from Myanmar and the Thai-Myanmar border. In 2017 December, Wide Horizons transitioned the program to Mawlamyine. WH has a mission to build the capacity of young, diverse adults from Myanmar to work effectively in civil society and within their organizations. WH has a student-centered, experiential approach to education with a curriculum that emphasize group work, reflective practice and critical thinking. At WH, students live, study and work together, entirely in English. Community Development, English and Computer Literacy are the 3 core subjects taught at Wide Horizons. Following the 10-months of academics, students return to their host organization for a 10-month work placement to build upon the skills they learned. As part of the community development course, a group of WH academic students have written a proposal for a curriculum project at Mon Intensive English Program (MIEP) based on their needs assessment findings. Mote Oo will work together with WH students to organize a curriculum training with MIEP staff to collaboratively develop an effective curriculum for their 6-month English program in October 2018.

I am teaching pre intermediate English class. In my class, there are about 40 students. We have monthly end test in

each month. What I often use is Multiple Choice questions type because it is easy to mark for me in large size class.

But I found some challenge when I write multiple choice questions.. Can you give me any suggestion for that?

ကြနမကအခလကရ pre intermediate အဂၤလပစာအတနးက သငၾကားေနတ႔ ဆရာမတစေယာကပါ။ ကၽြနမအတနးထမာ ေကာငးသားဥးေရ ေလးဆယေလာက ရပါတယ။

လတငးေကာငးသားေတြက လပတ စာေမးပြ စစေပးရပါတယ။ အဒအတြက က ြနမအၿမေမးခြနးေတြက ျပငဆငရပါတယ။ အမားဆးသးျဖစတာေတာ multiple choice ေမးခြနးေတြပါ။

ေကာငးသားဥးေရက အရမးမားေတာ အမတေပးရတာလညး လြယတ႔ အဒလ ေမးခြနးပစမ းက အမားဆး သးျဖစပါတယ။ ဒါေပမယ ေမးခြနးေတြက ျပငရတာခကတယ။ အတာေၾကာင

multiple choice ေမးခြနးေတြက ျပငတအခါ ဘယလမ းျပငသငလ အႀကဉာဏေလး ေပးပါအနးရင။

Multiple choice questions are very easy and reliable for the teacher to mark as there is only one correct answer. We don’t need expert knowledge for marking. A trained monkey can also mark it. Different assessors can give the same answer the same score. However, it is hard to design. It can take ages to make sure they are good questions. There are some rules you need to follow for creating multiple choice questions.

Make all the options, the distractors and correct answer, the same length.

Don’t make correct answer shorter or longer than distractors so that the students will know the correct answer easily. All the choices should be the same length.

Make all the options realistic.

Don’t include any silly or irrelevant distractors. All of the wrong choices should be reasonable. It can be very hard to do that. Make sure there is only one correct answer

Put only one correct answer in choices if it is support to be only one correct answer. Check your questions stem and options again and again.

Make sure there is a correct answer.

Sometimes we forgot to add correct answer while thinking about the distractors. Check there is a correct answer in it.

Don’t trick the students with complex wording or double negatives.

Write test question with simple structure that is easy to understand. Avoid using negative stated stems. If you must use them, highlight the negative word so that it is obvious to students. Don’t use combination of those words in the same question: not, no, nor, the -un prefix, etc.

Have the same number of options.

The number of options for each question should be all the same. If you want to give four options then there will be four options for each question.

Be careful using “all of the above” and “ none of the above .

You can these, but don’t use them very often. Most teachers use these as the correct answer, so students can easily guess. You can’t tell students really knew the answer for choosing “none of the above” option.
