Can you smell it? In the air? The party season. Summer. The warm weather. The beach.

Doesn’t it smell amazing? There is something about this time of year that just makes me feel so refreshed, reinvigorated and renewed, even though we’ve probably all had massive years already. I’m sure you know what I mean.

I just love this time of year. And if you need a reason to turn over a new leaf, it’s

this: There’s no better time! There’s also no better time than now to get a handle

on your stress and start leading a positive life. These are two of the topics we are covering in this edition.

Did you know we are in the midst of a stress epidemic? You can probably feel it in yourself and in the community.

The Stress and Wellbeing Survey of Australians conducted by the Australian Psychology Society indicates an ongoing trend of significantly lower levels of wellbeing and significantly higher levels of stress and distress, and depressive and anxiety symptoms than in previous years.

Sad, huh? While the World Health Organisation claims that

globally more than 350 million people are affected by depression.

Concerning.I don’t want to alarm you, but it doesn’t look good. In

the next six to seven years the biggest cause of death will be stress, according to one Australian expert.

On a happier note, there are many things you can do to reduce stress and make changes to lead the life you deserve, which ties in nicely with a story on leading a positive life and practicing gratitude.

You’ll see the correlation between the two, but in essence when we can let go and embrace change in our lives, we will be more equipped to handle stress and anxiety. Doing things that make you happy like hanging out with your friends and family, walking on the beach, being out in the fresh air, shopping, (did I just write that?) and just simply looking after yourself will bring a sense of calm.

The upside? Well, when you do you will be more joyful and healthier, and life will be like one big party … every … single … day!

And who wouldn’t want that? Liz xPS would you like to escape with even more Get it? Head over to our website and sign up for our new eMag, for regular updates on events, sales, travel, fashion and much more.

t’s probably not surprising that when most people are confronted with the prospect of going to Family

Court, they think of all the private and confidential matters that might be out in the open for everyone to know. Often, people’s first thought wanders to infidelities and other indiscretions. But one of the most common “secrets” that parties going through marriage breakdown worry about, particularly

small business owners, are those secrets that they have kept from the Government. That is, that extra income earned and not declared, those “white lies” told to Centrelink to receive a benefit and sometimes, those exaggerations told to the Bank.

Even if you have not been the one responsible, but your former partner has, you need to ensure you receive legal advice before you put pen to paper about those matters; or speak about them at Court. There are significant risks involved with providing information to the Family Court that could potentially lead to self-incrimination or self-exposure to monetary penalty which might be imposed by a court or a Government body, such as the Australian Taxation Office, Centrelink or the Office of State Revenue.

If a person is concerned that information they provide in Family Court proceedings may tend to prove that a person has committed an offence under Australian law or may lead to a monetary penalty then it is crucial that this is appropriately addressed by the person’s legal representatives to safeguard from the Family Court referring the information to the ATO, Centrelink, the Office of State Revenue or any other relevant government department for investigation.

In a recent case before the Family Court, the Judge reported a party in the Court proceedings to the Office of State Revenue; having lied about the value of a property for stamp duty purposes. Whilst that “lie” had helped the wife in the family law proceedings, it did nothing to help her with the debt she would have then incurred at the Office of State Revenue.

If you require advice or representation in family law matters, Kristy-Lee Heard, a family lawyer at Cassandra Pullos Lawyers, is able to assist you. Kristy-Lee has worked closely with Cassandra Pullos, the principal of the firm, since 2009. Kristy-Lee and the team at Cassandra Pullos Lawyers are committed to providing focused and strategic solutions in family law matters, designed specifically for each client’s individual circumstances.

n the next six to seven years the biggest cause of death will be stress.

As scary as it sounds we are already living in the midst of a stress epidemic and clinicians and psychotherapists all over Australia are seeing the devastating effects.

Failed relationships, loss of income, family breakups, chronic illness and disease, death.

Roxanie Lebsanft says she has seen it escalate in her clinical practice for more than 10 years.

“The stress epidemic is already here. I’ve been seeing it escalate in my clinical practice for over a decade and in discussion with professional colleagues, they’re seeing the same. The media is full of it; our entertainment depicts it often. It’s already viral,” says the psychotherapist, who is also a homoeopath and Bowen therapist.

Stress and Wellbeing Survey of Australians conducted by the Australian Psychology Society indicates an ongoing trend of significantly lower levels of wellbeing and significantly higher levels of stress and distress, and depressive and anxiety symptoms than in previous years.

While the World Health Organisation claims that globally more than 350 million people are affected by depression.

“We’re seeing this every day with 50 per cent of chronic sick leave due to depression and anxiety. It’s more common in women than men,” says Roxanie.

Roxanie’s interest in the stress epidemic and fight for change began with her own story. Like many women in this day and age, was a ‘stressed’, high-functioning mum who searched high and low, spent bucket loads of money on education to find strategies and solutions that would help her to cope better.

That was 20 years ago.

“It took many courses, two failed relationships, single parenthood, three degrees and decades of life experience and clinical practice to put together a range of strategies that I know make fast, effective and fundamental differences for living contentedly,” she says.

“Stress, or as it is otherwise known, anxiety, is the precursor to depression. These two moods are linked and often vacillate. The higher the level of anxiety, the higher likelihood there will be of developing equal bouts of depression in both intensity and duration, as I have observed in clinical practice.

“Anxiety; feeling overwhelmed, helpless, overly responsible and afraid, can lead to exhaustion, relationship breakdowns and collapse, which then leads into depression.

“Depression; the loss of hope, feeling helpless and disconnected can lead to total despair and chronic illness.

“Neither of these states, if they progress

and intensify, are sustainable. Something gives eventually. Either people look for solutions and different strategies of coping or they lose hope.

“I don’t want other women to have to struggle as much as I did for the answers and then miss out on the potential of the connections they have around them. What a waste of time and quality that would be for everyone.”

Not only does the epidemic of stress affect us, our families and lives, but it also effects the community.

Roxanie says moods are infectious, highly viral and deeply impact the people with whom we communicate. You only have to be around someone who is grumpy or angry to see how quickly that mood infects everyone else around them.

“Amplify this affect over time, in relationships; at home, at work, in social settings and we start a contagion of ‘stress’. The subtle ways in which we see this now, are

feelings of competing, comparing, having to do more to achieve a sense of security or recognition. These are all early signs of the stress epidemic. When life balance is out of kilter to try and ‘cope’, what we’re actually saying is that we are now suffering from the ‘stress epidemic’.”

Many women will be able to relate to this.

“I believe women are the key person of influence in their home, family and in their social circle. Traditionally, women nurture, teach, network and nourish relationships. If women feel overwhelmed and exhausted they start to isolate themselves, feel less than and that vital link of connection deteriorates,” she says.

“They are also the role models that teach our children how to be in the world. If children learn that to be an adult means being ‘stressed’, we then raise anxious kids who as adults are six times more likely to suffer depression.”

This the reason why Roxanie is so concerned. It’s one of the reasons why she co-founded Bare Hands with business partner Laurie Morrison which aims to help women cope with stress.

Bare Hands provides a range of educational products that teach practical life strategies, effective communication skills and self-awareness tools. These are the coping mechanisms that help women realign themselves into greater balance and more sustainable and value-based relationships.

“Our primary focus is on catching it early, maximising the potential for a meaningful and joyful life. Minimising the anxiety, overwhelm and exhaustion so that they can then be inspiring role models in their family and community,” says Roxanie.

“We specialise in supporting women. We have excellent solutions that really work and as professionals, I feel it’s our responsibility to share that education as much as we can, to help and support a shift in this trend of ‘stressful living’. There are currently not enough easy to access, quality resources available.”

If you would like to know more about Bare Hands and the tools on offer visit barehands.com.au or get in touch with Roxanie and Laurie on 1300 134 799.

Self-care first: When you are content and energised, everyone wins. Block out time in your diary for some “you time” to de-stress every week. Do something you know will help.

Time management: Do things that will matter in five, 10 and 20 years, and let the rest go. If your time was money where would you spend it? Do things of value.

Realistic: Be realistic in what you expect of yourself and others. If you are 100 per cent stressed all the time, aim for 85 per cent. Life is about connection and deep contentment.

Educate: Delegate tasks to others by asking what you want clearly and specifically. Help others share the responsibility. Be sure to say thank you.

Say ‘no’: Without justification when you really want to say ‘no’ to obligation. Do it guilt free. You may need to practice this, so start with saying “let me get back to you”.

Say ‘yes’: To more play time and regular down time from technology so you can hang out friends and family. Get in touch with your inner child. Say ‘yes’ to all the things you want to in your life.

Be you: You are enough exactly as you are. Be authentic. The more authentic you can be with others, the more connection and contentment you will have in your life.

uphold a code of conduct: At home, work and for yourself. What counts to you? Have respect for yourself and your surroundings, and others will too.

Simple pleasures: Grab them when you can and spread them like wild fire. Small random acts of kindness - like compliments, a smile or a hug - are the little things that make a big difference.

Tame guilt and fear: Get really curious about why you feel the way you do. If you feel guilty or fearful ask yourself why and start to break those feelings down.

Initiate positive change: Start the ripple effect. Don’t wait for someone else to do it for you. Your willingness to do things in a more effective and satisfying way will be inspiring to others. Make change.

Nurture yourself: As you would a child. If your self-talk is harsh, ask yourself whether you would say those things to a child. If it’s not OK to say to someone else, it’s not OK for you to say them to yourself.

Gratitude: What are five things you are grateful for right now? Count them on your hand. Think about them every night before you close your eyes to go to sleep. Teach this to others and experience the difference in your life.

“I believe women are the key person of influence in their home, family and in

their social circle. Traditionally, women nurture, teach, network and nourish

relationships. If women feel overwhelmed and exhausted they start to isolate

themselves, feel less than and that vital link of connection deteriorates.”

Why are people scared of change? One of my favourite authors Anne

Wilson Schaef talks about change as being “the manifestation of our ability to grow and become.” The more we accept change, the greater the opportunity to evolve, the more resilience we gain, the greater our awareness becomes. It’s like anything in life, the more we practice it, the easier it gets.

I love how spiritual teacher Pema Chodron refers to the feeling of fear as a natural reaction to moving closer to the truth. If we look at life this way, we can start to view change as an exciting opportunity to move closer towards being the best versions of ourselves.

Where does being positive fit into this? Each of us has the ability in this moment

to improve a situation by rethinking it. We can consciously change the outcome by adjusting our response to it. While the changes and choices we make will be different, our capacity to choose is universal. Positive affirmations are one powerful tool that can be used to change negative thought patterns around change and create positive outcomes in our lives. My absolute favourite affirmations to practice are from self-help expert Louise Hay. Her philosophy is based around the premise that the more we believe something to be true, the more it becomes true for us. The more we recite and emit positive thoughts, the more the Universe will feed us magic.

Why does it matter? It’s really an individual, attitudinal thing.

But if you want to live a full, happy and abundant life, being positive matters. Imagine moving through life without ever allowing yourself the actual joy of living, growing, of giving, of receiving?

What areas of life are people changing? From our literature sales, wellbeing

industry trends and feedback from attendees

REAL LIFE with Kristal Brown

at the launch of our new collaborative business, The Holistic Project, I would say that people are showing a greater interest in the move to a “wholistic” approach to health and wellbeing. That is, looking at the whole picture and all of the elements that make up wanting to live your best life (including ways to improve relationships, careers and health). This includes whole, organic food choices; alternative healing modalities, yoga and meditation. Some of themes people are wanting more guidance on include finding balance, exploring a greater sense of purpose, increasing energy, and breaking through blockages or past conditioning.

What are the highs and lows of changing your life? how do you get through them?

Of course, it depends on what in life is changing, but I would say the highs could include:l Finding more clarity about what you want

in life.l Greater and new opportunities coming

your way.l Meeting new people and exploring new

places.l The potential for learning, including self-

discovery.l Becoming more flexible and resilient.

the lows could include:l It takes time to readjust.l It takes time to see movement or results.l It can be lonely, isolating and distressing.

Maintaining balance through change is really important. Embrace change. Be open and flexible, but be sure to keep doing the things you have always loved and enjoyed doing. Many say change is the only constant in life, but we never really are too far from the comfort and security of ourselves.

What are some ways people can change their life?

Learn something new: If you are not being forced into change, such as from a move or relationship break up, why not push yourself out of your comfort zone? Growth occurs when we expand our thinking.

Make time for you: Just as you would incentivise staff at work or children at home, allow yourself some nurture time daily. Some alone time, a walk on the beach, painting your nails, reading a good book, making yourself a nutrient-dense smoothie or planning your next holiday, are all largely free and easy activities that can help you move forward.

Meditation: Silence speaks volumes. Quiet space to meditate is the key to mind and body rejuvenation. If we can make time to check our emails twice a day, we can make time to sit in silence at least once! My fave meditation for beginners’ book is Hurry up and Meditate, by David Michie, is available at www.positivepeeps.com.au

Pen your intentions: What is it that you want to achieve, either today, this week, this year or in the next five years? Intention, goal setting and list creating are powerful manifestation tools that can help you to identify, visualise and actualise what changes you wish to occur in your life.

Practice gratitude: Sure, the path to positive change in all aspects of our lives is ongoing. But what about all of the changes you have already endured and implemented in your life to date? Take some time to reflect and be grateful for all you have achieved and overcome. You are an amazing being with unlimited potential! When we give gratitude, life will continue to deliver goodness in return.

Heal your body while you sleepost of us wish our bodies could get better easily and quickly as issues

such as stress, fatigue and pain often control our lives. We also tend to think we have to live with these conditions because solutions are too time consuming or complicated. But if you have 15 minutes spare to lay on a mat, then you are on your way to improving your health as easily and as quickly as you had wished for.

The original Bio-Mat reduces stress and fatigue, improves sleep patterns, eases joint pain, reduces inflammation, eliminates toxins in the body and increases blood circulation. It’s even being used as an alternative cancer treatment.

While this mat may sound as unbelievable as Aladdin’s magic carpet, read the facts for yourself. The Bio-Mat uses quantum energy technology combining infrared rays, negative ion therapy and the superconducting properties of pure amethyst. Basically, verified scientific principles are combined with a holistic treatment to bring you a solution like no other.

This non-invasive and soothing experience addresses the root causes of many common ailments, as well as providing immediate relief from some types of pain and discomfort. The therapy builds long-term resistance to disease and deterioration too.

Many doctors have begun recommending the Bio-Mat to patients as it has undergone rigorous testing to be ISO certified for quality and is a FDA Registered Class II Medical Device.

If your body could do with some restored vitality, increased circulation, improved cardiovascular health, alleviated migraines and reduced allergy symptoms, the Bio-Mat is your answer.

You can come and try out this magical mat at the Hope Island Medispa or even buy one for yourself so you can spend your nights sleeping away pain, fatigue and stress.

Start living your best healthy life Where should people start when trying

to improve their health? Start with focusing on the three Ss - sleep,

stress and simplify. A lot of the time if you can improve your sleep habits you will improve so many other areas of your health. Stress is also a big reason for poor health. With de-stressing, one strategy includes practicing regular “escapism” - either real or perceived. Real escapism involves removing ourselves from the stressful situation by exercising, doing some yoga, calling a friend or seeing a counsellor. Perceived escapism includes meditation, practicing mindfulness, deep breathing or listening to music.

Often our schedules are so full that we don’t have the time to exercise, plan and shop for healthy meals, or unwind and relax. Evaluating our schedules and cutting out three non-essential activities each week allows time to be healthy and ultimately happier.

What’s the most important thing we must consider before going on a health plan?

Before embarking on a health plan consider having a medical check-up first to ensure your health plan is the best one for you

and your body. how can we improve our health

effortlessly? Can you give us your top three tips?

1 hydrate well: Drinking enough water is paramount for feeling and looking well. Avoid excessive “liquid brain shrinkers” which include caffeinated drinks and alcohol.

2 Move more: Seeing exercise as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience helps remove the mental barrier surrounding getting more exercise.

3 eat mostly fresh: Aim for at least 80 per cent of your diet to be unprocessed, fresh foods rather than packet, processed foods.

if you could suggest one simple change, what would it be?

The most important change when wanting to be healthier is for us to change our attitude towards our health. Seeing maintaining our health as a priority rather than a burden will help to find masking positive changes purposeful and rewarding.

Why is good mental health important to living a healthy life?

Good mental health is imperative for good physical health and vice versa. Luckily many of the steps we take to improve either will benefit both, for example, exercise is great for boosting both our physical and mental health. If we are struggling in areas of our mental health sometimes we need extra professional assistance by way of counselling or medical support.

et it Magazine talks to Skino2 and Alive Clinics managing director Alison Atia

about how looking after your skin doesn’t have to be hard. She takes a few minutes to share her secrets and some of the award-winning Skino2 products with you. Skino2 recently won the Gold Coast Business Excellence Award for the health and wellbeing section.

Why is it important to look after your skin with regular treatments?

Each season the change in weather can really effect the condition of your skin. So getting in to see your qualified skin therapist is really important so they can check your skin and help work out a new skincare program.

What should we doing in spring for our skin?

With spring comes sunshine, humidity and time spent outdoors, so now is the time adapt your skincare and makeup. Here is a lovely fresh and easy look I recommend for spring.

Get the lookTo get the look it all starts with a good daily

skincare regime, followed by a great base. Start with Skino2 Facial Tint 75g ($29.95) mixed with Radiance Primer 50g ($69). Then lightly brush on the Mineral Makeup Compact ($62) and apply Blossom, Plum or Peach blush to the apple of the cheeks, lips and eyes ($32) (pictured). To make it stay put set your makeup with the Hydrating Spritz 50g. Complete the quick and natural look

With the “no makeup natural look” in style this season, it is all about having great skin. Try the Skino2 Anti-ageing Peel or Oxygen ACE Infusion Facial from $99 to help instantly restore a natural and healthy glow.

What products should we have in our bathroom cupboard and be using at this time of year?

For fresh, clean and glowing skin this season make sure you have a good quality cleanser and facial wipes, and ensure to include a gentle micro-exfoliation every second day or at least once a week.

Using regular skin exfoliation helps to give your skin a healthy glow by removing dead skin cells. Using an exfoliator also helps ensure you get the best benefits from your daily essential multivitamin skin booster.

Never leave home without applying a non-greasy 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen for sun protection and to keep you looking youthful. It is much better and less expensive to help prevent the harsh skin ageing effect of the sun than to pay for costly cosmetic surgery or laser fix-ups later. Try Skino2 Micro Creams 50g ($44), Skino2 Facial Tint Sunscreen 30+ 75g ($29.95) and Multi Vit BACE Serum 30ml ($59) to give your skin some extra spring radiance.

Shop online or in-store to receive 20 per cent off Skino2 products this month.

P 5593 4488 or visit the website skino2.com.au

with Lash Enhancing Water Proof Mascara ($38) and Plumping Lip Gloss ($38). All of the Skino2 products are available on the website.

Always ensure in the humid climate you use a more natural-looking, non-pore-clogging makeup and to stay fresh and beautiful always have a dewy hydrating spritz on hand.

What are your top tips for looking after your skin in spring?

Spring is the time for rejuvenation and growth so it’s also the best time to book for a professional skin renewal facial.

outliving the oddsor a long time, Judy had been on a quest to find a healthy lifestyle

balance. She knew if she kept on the path she’d followed all her life, her future wouldn’t look promising.

She thought she was eating OK but never found herself getting any healthier. With a bad family health history of her mother, father, brother and sister all passing

away before the age of 53, she did not want to follow in their steps.

Having always given up on exercise when she became injured or stressed, Judy needed a change and Vision Personal Training was the answer.

Since working with the team, she has now learnt about food and exercise, and the importance of finding alternative exercises to do if you have injuries. She also now follows a paleo diet.

“I feel great and am a lot stronger in my mind and body,” she says. “My weight loss has been a real bonus and I keep setting and reaching all of my goals.”

Judy says she doubts she could have achieved all of this without the help of Vision Personal Training who always provided a pep talk when needed. At the age of 58 she had already lived longer than most of her family members and now talks openly about her journey.

“We all need help as most people are a jack of all trades and master at none, but to be

From the reef to the outback to the rainforest, holidaying in Far North Queensland is an unforgettable travel experience whichever direction you go: North, south, east or west

t is one of the most beautiful places in the world where locals walk among celebs,

life steps back a gear and holiday charm is amplified.

Not only is Far North Queensland home to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree National Park, it also offers a wide variety of things to do outside the Cairns hub. There are plenty of activities and places to visit, so if you’re keen to shed your city skin, book a flight Cairns and set off into the tropical paradise.

Wherever you go - north, south, east or west – the place won’t disappoint, says Brenda Campbell from FNQ Apartments.

Here are her top places to visit outside of Cairns if you’re planning a holiday to the far north.

NORTH

A popular jaunt for visitors is to head to one of the northern beaches. There are several, but you can’t miss Yorkeys Knob, Trinity Beach and Palm Cove.

northern BeaChes:Yorkeys Knob – A pretty little suburb with

a safe swimming beach and stinger net, plus a handful of shops and restaurants. There is a marina and golf course and it is 15 minutes from Cairns.

trinity Beach – This is what postcards are made of, so think palm trees on the beach…a popular spot with locals and tourists for day trips, there are good restaurants and bars

and, bike hire. It’s 20 minutes from Cairns.Palm Cove – Plenty of luxury places to

stay, plus many fine restaurants, a selection of boutiques and swimming enclosure. It will take about 25 minutes from Cairns.

hartleys Creek – Check out Hartleys Crocodile Adventure Park, with croc shows, boat cruise on the lagoon and feeding displays. It’s 15 minutes from Palm Cove.

Port DouGLas:Among the main tourist hot spots in Far

North Queensland, Port Doug has the famous Four Mile Beach as its tropical setting.

Checkout the Shannonvale Tropical Fruit Winery and the Rainforest Habitat Wildlife Sanctuary, or take a ride in an off-road vehicle. The Sunday markets are popular and also check out the Bally Hooley Steam Train or browse the Australian and Oceanic Art Gallery.

CairnsDaintree reGion:The Daintree Village sits on the banks of

the Daintree River that many crocs call home. There are a number of restaurants, galleries and an endless list of things to do.

But one of the true sensations is Cape Tribulation in Daintree National Park. There’s everything from exotic fruit tasting, jungle surfing and guided walks to horse riding, four-wheel driving and kayaking along the shoreline.

Getting there: Daintree Village is an hour and a half from Cairns and Cape Trib is a short drive from there

Three hot tips to making sure your pet is well hydrated:

1. Make sure they have access to good clean water at all times.

2. Refill their bowl every morning and night. Well-hydrated pets can better keep themselves cool compared to those that are dehydrated, which in turn helps fight off other heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke.

3. Be proactive and dot several bowls of water in various locations inside and out for your pets.

Are your pets at risk of dehydration?s the weather heats up and we come into the warmth of summer, your

four-legged friends need to be top of mind.

New survey results from leading pet product expert PetSafe reveal almost a third of pet owners do not know how much they should be giving their pets to drink. The surprising results means that more than 2 million cats and dogs may be at risk of dehydration.

Spokesperson Angela Critchley says the survey results raise serious concerns about pets’ wellbeing.

“Dehydration can potentially result in serious health issues for pets including urinary tract infections, kidney disease and, in very extreme cases, death, especially in the harsh Australian climate,” she says.

“While most pet owners know how much to feed their pets, little is said about how much a pets should drink and it can be very easy for an owner to lose track and forget to refill a water bowl.”

Stuart Denman is a lifestyle mentor who spends his time working with those craving a better, more balanced life. His five-step process will help you lead a fulfilled life

little more than 12 months ago I remember how frustrated I was with my current situation. I was tired, resentful and

couldn’t see an end in sight of the long hours and challenging times.

When I finally decided to talk to a peer about my challenges his response was quite unexpected. It went something like this.

“You know Stu, life isn’t meant to be easy. You have to choose between your family and loved ones and your business. You have to ignore their needs or they will distract you from being successful.”

Ignore my family’s needs? Was he kidding? At that moment I knew what I was really

frustrated with. I wanted more and knew that to me, my family, health, happiness and lifestyle were my most important drivers and I was frustrated that I had lost sight of that when we had been hell bent on achieving business success, as my wife is an extremely driven entrepreneur who put my commitment to shame.

I wasn’t living my passion and that was living a life full of fun, laughter, excitement and variety. I needed to reconnect to my wife, my kids, the universe and myself.

When you have removed yourself from a situation for some time you become disconnected. Over the next month I set about reconnecting and now practice these five steps every week to stay connected in my entrepreneurial family.

Step 1: Let it go – No, not the song from Frozen that you already started singing in your head, but being able to let go of the things that you cannot control. I couldn’t control how our

clients or suppliers acted so rather than looking at everything as a problem, I started to look for solutions.

When I was stuck in victim mode I immediately went into an unresourceful place that created tension in the lives of those around me. As a man, we want to solve everything ourselves and don’t want to show weakness by asking for help. This keeps us even more isolated from those we love.

Step 2: tea time – When both partners are running the business is can become very hard to talk about how you feel rather that what you are doing. This is why we introduced “tea time” into our lives. It is basically a five-minute period where every electronic device is switched off, the kids are in bed and it is just my wife and I. We look at each other and actually talk about our lives that aren’t business or the kids. Was very difficult for the first week as we realised just how much we talked about business rather than our feelings and ourselves.

Step 3: have a finish time – I think the major cause of my frustration in our business was not having a finish time and always feeling that work was more important than family. Perception is reality so when you decide to close the computer and be involved with your family, only you can choose to ignore these boundaries you placed around your business and decide to do more work or answer that email. The boundaries you place need to be as set in concrete as you can so everyone knows when they have your undivided attention.

Step 4: Leave the phone at home –

As mentioned in the previous step, setting boundaries also means deciding when and how involved you are in your family and fun activities. If you are out for lunch or taking the kids for ice-cream or to the park, don’t be one of those parents who is too busy looking down to see all the amazing things your kids are doing. Just think, what are you teaching your kids about their self-worth when they want your undivided attention that they might not get much of during the week.

Step 5: Don’t be accountable for each other – There is nothing worse for a relationship than to assume the role of the Mum or Dad of the other person by continuingly asking them what they are doing. When one partner feels as though the other partner is parenting them, resentment grows and, more importantly, intimacy quickly disappears. If you can’t be accountable to yourself, find a mentor to not only hold you accountable to all of your personal pledges you have made to yourself but also help you on your way to true business mastery.

ombining the best of the local arts and crafts community and dedicated street-food

vendors, Miami Marketta has become one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic eat streets.

Open every Saturday night, the marketta offers a tantalising smorgasbord of entertainment and culinary sensations right in the middle of a remodelled industrial estate.

Many people had told me that I must go and experience it for myself. The problem being, I am a chef who works every Saturday night. But in a turn of events I managed to book a weekend off and the first point of call was to see what all the hype was about. I gathered a few like-minded friends and made the short trip south to Miami making sure I bought my appetite along for the ride.

I had high expectations. I hoped the quality of food was good enough to

keep me interested for more than the few hours I had spared for

the evening.Walking through the

front gates of the marketta was like walking into food heaven. A huge smile ran across my face. The place

was packed. I looked down through the strip of around

20 or so street stalls. Steam and warm plumes of flavour-filled

clouds circled over the salivating crowds hungry to sample what the vendors

had to offer. The lines for the food stalls were already three to four deep, but thankfully were moving quickly. I couldn’t wait to get stuck in!

With my camera in hand, I circled the stalls twice sneaking behind the scenes taking photos of the action before lining up for my first course.

My mission was to sample as much as I could while tasting some of the locally brewed and sourced beers. I do enjoy a good Stone & Wood Lager, so was very pleased to see it sitting on the counter of the Cargo Bar begging to be paired with my recently purchased salted pretzel.

I took my beer and meandered through to the food stalls when I was suddenly stopped by security. The guard instructed me I couldn’t take my beer as the marketta was only licensed in the bar area and the main stage. What better way to gain more info than from a gentleman who is there every week. We chatted briefly and I mentioned that it was a positive sign to see the markets so busy. He laughed and said it was only at half capacity and the numbers would double in the next hour or so; early days yet. He told me to keep an eye out for the open doors in between the food stalls as the secretive doors led to the home of activities and crafts. I popped my head though one of the doors to see art workshops taking place and spiral T-shirt tie-dying demonstrations for the kids. The antique furniture shop next to the bar is a must see and holds some exceptional preloved pieces brought back to life.

Beer finished, I purchased a small order of flash-fried calamari with handmade aioli and continued to discover more of what the Miami Marketta had to offer.

It had all tastes catered for with dishes inspired from every corner of the globe. Next dish for me was straight from the large paella pans full of chicken, bomba rice, chorizo and steamed mussels. The paella was amazing with just the right amount of crunch left to the rice. I had to pace myself and keep

my promise of only a small portion of each dish. It would prove to be tough. The flavour combinations were simple, yet extremely effective.

With such a variety of foods available including handmade Turkish gozleme, traditional Greek souvlaki, French crepes, vegan nachos, German sausages with sauerkraut, wood-fired pizzas, rotisserie chicken kebabs, Japanese-influenced wok-fried noodles and hand-rolled gnocchi; it really does become more than just another market.

It bought a smile to my face to see industry professionals from established restaurants working side by side with husband-and-wife traders; all harmoniously. The general comradery between traders is evident in the products offered, which helps create a fun and relaxing atmosphere.

The dynamic social scene of the markets makes it the perfect place to hang out with friends, watch live music on the purpose-built stage or enjoy a lazy Saturday twilight with the kids. Good food at more-than-reasonable prices paired with family-friendly entertainment is a rare commodity these days. There is undercover seating available for more than 400 people and various zones for the family to explore.

Don’t miss the Dessert Dining Hall where you can taste some home-baked delicacies. On the menu are chocolate-dipped strawberries and gelato, or why not sample a poffertjie straight from the back window of a converted caravan.

The Miami Marketta is on every Saturday from 4pm with live music until 10pm.

osé has always been trés cool among the very stylish French Riviera set and will be in season soon. As the

weather warms up, there’s no better time make this your drink of choice and begin your love affair with this wine.

Not only beautiful for its colours, rosé wines can display a vast array of amazing aromas, from purple and red floral notes to pretty red fruits to orange citrus, sweet confectionary even into the more savoury earthy tones.

Rosé can be made in a number of ways the first being the saignee method. Pronounced “san yeh” whereby the juice is bled off from the must in order

to give a concentration of aromatics and flavour. This is the preferred way to treat delicate pinot noir rosés and sometimes cabernet sauvignon.

This method creates more serious roses that are darker with more savoury, forest characters. When heavier more bold varieties are used the maceration method is used whereby limited skin contact is allowed so that colour and tannin remain limited to their time spent on skins.

The other way is via blending different red and white varieties but this is mainly used in sparkling wine and is less desirable in still wines.

The vin gris wines, translated to grey wine method, is whereby the red grapes are used to make an almost white wine with an extremely short maceration time used and is only used in

lighter varieties such as pinot, gamay and cinsault.Rosé can range from bone dry to slightly sweet making it a drink

that can cater for many tastes and can match a very wide range of foods depending upon the wines character. It is a versatile wine food and wine pairing option.

These wines can provide the perfect wine for many occasions especially the informal picnic. Grab some delicious bread, pates, cheeses, pickled vegetables and a range of chacuterie and suddenly there is no need for lunch or dinner. Just a steady graze throughout the day with a most picturesque location and setting to take in.

EnTERTAInMEnT

elgium DJ, producer and remixer Michael Fall has been rocking the

decks since he was 15. His love affair with music started when he was a child rifling through his parent’s record collection and experimenting with the controls on their old record player.

how did you get into DJing? What was the attraction for you?

I learnt the necessary DJ skills by bringing new pieces of musical technology home, plugging them in and pushing all the buttons until something happened. My first records I bought were new beat, progressive house and even pop, like UB40 and Donna Summer, and dark electronic music such as Front 242 and Anna Clark - both vinyl and CD - from local record shops when I was 12.

I began playing in local bars, parties and clubs in Belgium, getting my first break when I had the opportunity to play at a party for a big dance radio station here. I’ve enjoyed much success, blowing up dance floors across the globe.

What is your first musical memory? I will never forget the first beats from

Belgian’s music style ‘new beat’. Belgium was, and maybe is still, the leading country for all kinds of electronic dance music. When I was a child I listened to dance radio stations every day and saw all the upcoming new beat and dance artists.

That was it for me. I dreamed of making and playing music in clubs and at parties, and I said to my parents, “that’s what I wanna do when I grow up”. I was always pretending to be a radio host in my room and driving my parents nuts. As soon as I was old enough I went to clubs to listen music and I had a pretty good idea of what I wanted to do: Be a DJ and make music.

how has music and DJing enriched your life?

My first dream was to play once at a local party. I was a member of various youth associations and at one evening they needed a DJ that night. I didn’t even have a DJ name as I was only 15. My dream was beginning to become a reality. From that moment I knew I wanted to go further in music. Later I was playing all local parties and the beauty of it was that I started to meet people. I have met so many people who have enriched my life. After my beginner years I was invited to play

gigs outside my local area and discovered so many musicians and met so many more people. I played before a crowd of more than 3000 for the first time in my career.

When I was older, I started to organise parties together with my youth associations. My music taught me to take the first steps of self-employment and to run a business.

What has it allowed you to do? I saved my money during my beginner

DJ years and with the help of a good friend - and the owner of a bar where I played every week, who helped me to get the right funds, I was able to start a record store, which is still running successfully today.

Because of the record shop I was in contact with more record labels than I could ever have dreamed of. The year 2009 was the breakthrough of producing my own tracks. Together with a buddy of mine - a very good customer of my record store, who became a fellow artist and producer - we joked we should make some music. So we did. I sent it

to a Belgium record label and against all odds they liked the demo and he signed the track immediately. This track was compiled on several dance CDs and I was even in some official charts in Belgium. This was the start of everything.

Why are you proud of your music? I’m proud that I could work with

Universal. I also worked with some famous international artists including Fatman Scoop, Lumidee and Chappell.

My first debut album, which was released in 2013, received a golden award from my German distributer for successful sales worldwide. In Belgium I was in the album charts and they sold a lot of copies worldwide. My second album is coming up at the start of 2015. I have had over 30 releases worldwide.

how have australians reacted to Body on Fire?

In 2013 I released a track with Melbourne singer/songwriter Celeste, who

is very talented, and we shot a video in Melbourne. It was played on the ABC’s Rage. The track received a lot of play in Australia (in DJ circuits) and subsequently through a friend here it found its way to one of London’s biggest nightclubs. That helped it chart on the British DJ Dance chart where it peaked at number two.

This completely self-taught DJ, who saved up from a part-time job as a waiter as a teenager to buy all the necessary gear, takes time out to speak with Get it Magazine’s Elizabeth Campbell on his new release and why music runs through his veins

I was always pretending to be a radio host in my

H ScoRPIo oct 23 – nov 22The full moon on November 6 can prove to be unexpectedly sensual if you are lucky enough to be in a close bond or you meet someone desirable. If you can, indulge your senses. This month also offers a great opportunity in the first two thirds to take a firmer grip of your life direction and initiate new ideas. You will find yourself investing in opportunities that offer adventure, travel or a learning experience.

H SAgITTARIUS nov 22 – dec 22During the first three weeks of the month, make time to ponder. If you do, you can connect with a much deeper side of yourself. This may see you want to let go of a phase, relationship or problem and by doing so, make way for new and sparkling opportunities. With a new moon in your sign on November 22 you’ll have a wonderful chance to spark back into full form and dazzle.

H cAPRIcoRn dec 22 – Jan 20Your social life can power up, with the potential for moving in new circles and mixing with influential and likeable people. There may be options for romance too and through your work you could make a fabulous connection. Once the sun moves into Sagittarius on November 22 a tender phase shapes up, which might see you more sentimental.

H AqUARIUS Jan 21 – Feb 19When it comes to personal goals and ambitions you’ll be keen to make progress, so set your sights high, Aquarius. You might also find that tweaking your schedule and your plans brings even more opportunities for success. From November 22 a new moon in your future zone spotlights an opportunity to move in new circles and make some fab new connections.

H PIScES Febr 19 – March 20While your everyday life can seem to be filled with expansive opportunities, you could find yourself held back by red tape or too much bureaucracy. However, it’s not what you know but who you know that might be able to swing things your way. From the 22nd the stars give you a wonderful platform to express a more confident and dynamic side of your nature.

H ARIES March 20 –April 19The Scorpio focus over November can have a transformational quality about it, encouraging you to make decisions that could change aspects of your life dramatically. Meanwhile, the new moon in Sagittarius on November 22 hints that it’s time to let go of the old as you’re more than ready for fresh challenges and adventures.

H TAURUS April 20 – May 21If you can avoid power struggles, dynamic opportunities could open up for you, especially related to a romantic partnership or a business connection. The weeks ahead can be excellent for forging close bonds or negotiating deals, with a chance to reap rewards for your hard work. Chances are you’ll be in the mood to explore some sizzling romantic options too.

H gEMInI May 21 – June 21It may be wise to create a reduced schedule from November 6 as the full moon in Taurus can coincide with an opportunity to get in touch with your true needs and desires. Also look to pay greater attention to your everyday routines, particularly related to work and health, as key changes could prove liberating. Later in the month you may be ready for new adventures.

H cAncER June 21 – July 22Creativity and self-expression feature strongly this month and both can prove therapeutic. Practising your art or craft, or meeting someone new and flirty may boost your mood and energy levels significantly. Later in November the new moon can be a true catalyst and encourage you to explore ideas that might help you generate some extra cash.

H LEo July 22 – Aug 23Home, family and lifestyle matters can take precedence, giving a rather intense slant to your affairs in these areas. Whether you’re entertaining, redecorating or dealing with a change in family dynamics, you might be keen to ditch the old and welcome in the new. However, a big shift occurs from November 22 when there’s a superb chance to relax, catch up with friends and have some fun.

H VIRgo Aug 23 - Sept 22You may find yourself deep in thought and, in doing so, get to the heart of any issues that need urgent attention. Along with this, interactions with others, including anyone you are closely involved with, could consume a lot of time and energy. The trick will be to ensure your investment is worth it. Pleasingly, a happy focus on home and family can bring some light relief in the last third of November.

H LIBRA Sept 22 – oct 23With both the sun and Venus passing through your part of the sky, this month will allow you to rejuvenate. The sun will strengthen your sense of presence and Venus will add her blessings to all things concerned with love. Take a step back, allow things to come to you as they may.

LAST WORD with Sarah Blinco

here’s a woman in my new building, about the same age as me, who has such exciting things happening behind the screen of

her smartphone that she is unable to greet me − like, ever!

She lives on my floor. Every time I meet her in the foyer, I open my mouth to say hi, but before even a whisper escapes my lips, she’s tapping away furiously on Facebook. That’s not all. Once the elevator doors open, she swiftly manoeuvrers herself inside and stands facing the back so she can avoid communication of any kind. Super weird.

While this neighbour of mine has proved her personality development has suffered due to technology over-exposure, so have various residents from other floors who similarly whip out a mobile device for the sake of looking like they’re busy once it’s noted they need to share elevator space with another for an entire few seconds.

My question then, is this behaviour a result of people being so addicted to tech and social media that they’re fearful if they lose sight of updates for a mere moment they will “miss out” on the chance to comment, like or self-promote (never mind that there’s no reception in my building’s elevator)?

Or, is it because this digital world we now spend so much time in has stunted offline social development to the point where many react to any sort of close encounter as something awkward and feel uncomfortable making eye contact or giving a nod of acknowledgement?

Are humans becoming so #selfie-absorbed?There’s no denying we live in a world where

people search − often desperately − for WiFi in an elevator; where the only thing that rouses a smile is a five-bar strong 4G signal. I too am guilty of major anti-social freak-outs brought about by lack of connection, dead batteries and situations akin to the Windows blue screen of death. Once I had a melt down in the middle of the Mediterranean − on a cruise! Very bad. I even paid for ridiculously expensive (ridiculously expensive!) satellite for the privilege of being able to download my emails, one excruciatingly slow message at a time, only to be unable to reply as the outgoing server would not respond.

Meanwhile, I’m on a beautiful cruise liner but not on deck watching the sun set over Barcelona or socialising in a chic bar (which is what Cooper − my social-butterfly better half − was doing, of course); I was in a dimly lit library on the verge of tears because I couldn’t get on to the net. In my defence, I was trying to placate business clients, not post to Pinterest.

Still, it’s not ideal and occurred because of a reliance on technology that needed to be better managed by me.

There’s a cute new television series you may have heard of, aptly named, Selfie. The fundamental premise is based on Pygmalion or My Fair Lady − the main character’s name isn’t Eliza Doolittle but rather, Eliza Dooley.

Selfie’s contemporary spin is presented through Eliza’s self-absorbed “Instafamous” misadventures. Eliza boasts 263,000 “friends” and “an advertising presence on her Facebook page,” but following a major #life #epicfail, she realises some changes need to be made so engages a marketing professional, Henry, for the purpose of a “personal rebrand”.

Considering only her present problem of being mocked online, rather than the fact she needs an attitude adjustment, she desperately pleads, he dubiously responds, “Do you mean be a better person?” ... “Yeah [pause], or that...”.

The very first lesson Henry treats Eliza to is exactly what I need to convey to my anti-social (but possibly Instafamous) neighbours: “Every time you pass by (co-worker) Charmonique’s desk I want you to ask how she’s doing...then follow it up with a sympathetic response. Make eye contact and put your phone down while you’re talking to people!”.

Recently I decided I was tired of allowing obsessive compulsive reactions to “instant” technology demands rule my life and I feel freer for the experience of being able to respond/Tweet/post at appropriate points in time. I can even now − gasp − occasionally leave home

without my phone! I don’t feel compelled to Instagram every pretty thing I see.

Instead, I simply stop and appreciate. My 23-year-old hairdresser balked at this notion and explained to me that while I feel better off for spending time apart from my smartphone, she would feel incomplete without hers. She’s not alone and Psychology Today recently shared survey results indicating 73 per cent of people actually feel “panicked” if they’ve misplaced their phone or are not “connected” and 14 per cent feel “desperate”. Can you relate? The dependence goes further in that “one in 10 participants admitted to having used their phones during sex” and “12 per cent use their beloved devices in the shower”.

I found this information comforting because if people aren’t even parting with tech to enjoy sex or a shower now, then I can’t possibly take my neighbour’s behaviour personally, right?!

On that note, I do advocate it’s up to all of us to keep ourselves and loved ones in check with regards to being #selfie-absorbed because although it can be unconscious much of the time, this behaviour is not healthy for the mind or spirit. I believe, however, that a random smile or hello, and a moment without Facebook at the lunch table is; and further, might even lead to something more rewarding than a virtual thumbs-up.

As Selfie’s Eliza Dooley discovers, “When Siri is the only person who is there for you, it makes you realise being friended is not the same as having friends.” Too true. Let me just Tweet my neighbours with that...
