Prayer for the Confirmation Candidates
Today In the Church’s official prayer we begin the
“Christmas Countdown” we call the O Antiphons.
Some brilliant and witty monk in the 8th century
composed these as the Vesper antiphon for the mo-
nastic community’s evening prayer and they spread
to the whole church. There is a lot to be said about
the antiphons, but I’m only going to ask that you
pray them each day for Gesu’s Confirmation candi-
dates. During Advent our young people, together
with their parents, are discerning whether or not they
feel called to this final initiation sacrament at this
time. Some may truly want it. Some may be com-
pletely confused and uncertain. Some may have no
interest at all. Whatever they are feeling, discern-
ment means paying attention to their inner experi-
ence and honoring it – even if it means that they do
not move forward towards the sacrament, which will
be celebrated in June. If they do move forward, the
Gesu assembly will meet, welcome and bless them at
the 10:30 liturgy on Sunday, January 7, the feast of
Epiphany. In the meantime I ask you to remember
them daily in prayer from now until Christmas, when
they will send letters to Father Etzel letting him
know the result of their discernment. Here are the
antiphons:
December 17 1 O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel that mourns in lonely exile here until the Son of God appear. Refrain: Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to you, O Israel. 2 O come, O Wisdom from on high, who ordered all things mightily; to us the path of knowledge show and teach us in its ways to go. Refrain 3 O come, O come, great Lord of might, who to your tribes on Sinai's height in ancient times did give the law in cloud and majesty and awe. Refrain 4 O come, O Branch of Jesse's stem, unto your own and rescue them! From depths of hell your people save, and give them victory o'er the grave. Refrain 5 O come, O Key of David, come and open wide our heavenly home. Make safe the Way that leads on high and close the path to misery. Refrain 6 O come, O Bright and Morning Star, and bring us comfort from afar! Dispel the shadows of the night and turn our darkness into light. Refrain 7 O come, O King of nations, bind in one the hearts of humankind. Bid all our sad divisions cease and be yourself our King of Peace. Refrain

CSA MINUTE
Christmas
While the spirit of generosity is most evident at Christmas, Christian stewards in the Archdiocese of Detroit share their gifts year-round through the Catholic Services Appeal. The Archdiocese is grateful for the nearly 64,000 faithful who pledged $21.9 million to the 2017 Catholic Services Ap-peal. CSA gifts support valuable ministries, programs, and services that touch the lives of thousands each day. As you plan your year-end donations, consider benefiting your parish with a gift to the CSA. Parishes that exceed their CSA targets receive the excess funds, without archdiocesan assessment, as refunds for parish programs and projects.
