IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE

On this one year anniversary of death, we remember this week, Janet Cherney-Steege who passed away on February 5, 2017. Please keep Janet and her family in prayer. May she rest in God’s eternal peace.

LITURGY NOTES

“May God bless you and keep you. May the Holy One grant you mercy. May the face of love shine on you,

and give you peace, and give you peace!”

©School Sisters of St. Francis 1989

This blessing, taken from the first reading for January 1, seems an apt greeting for one month into a new year. We have had an eventful year as a nation, as a world, and as a parish. The following are some questions for all of us to ponder as a parish:

¨ Who are we in this new day, new year? ¨ People remark about the welcome and hospitality they

experience here. In this new year, how can we expand our welcome into the neighborhood? The greater community?

¨ Personally, how can we challenge ourselves to grow in our spiritual lives?

· Is this the year for a retreat? · Tri-Parish Read? · Bible Study? · Greater involvement in/commitment to our weekly

liturgy experience? ¨ Is it time to become intentional about personal prayer time? ¨ Is this the year to enter into awareness of a cause, learn more

about it, and then act? How might we open ourselves to doing works of mercy this year?

¨ Might this be the opportunity to consider sharing more of my resources to support the good ministries of this faith community?

There is so much to do, and each effort – no matter how large or small – makes a difference. Let’s make this a year to remember: a year of growth in the light of Christ!

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 4, 2018

COFFEE AND DONUTS SUNDAY Today is our monthly Coffee and Donuts Sunday. Join us in the Granville Room for refreshments and fellowship before you head home. Hosted by the Parish Life Committee.

NEW PARISHIONER REGISTRATION Anyone wishing to register as a new member of St. Catherine is invited to do so today in the Granville Room after both Masses. In addition to completing a registration form, you will receive a packet of information that will familiarize you with the parish. Registration Sunday is held on the first weekend of every month. You are also welcome to stop at the parish office during regular business hours to register if that is more convenient for you.

MARDI GRAS CASINO NIGHT 2018 Do you have your tickets yet? We still have tickets available. Our Mardi Gras Casino Night is Saturday, February 10, in our school gym. The night will be held from 5:30-9:30 p.m. and includes a light dinner, casino games, silent auction and raffles. For more information go to our parish website. Tickets can be purchased after Mass or at the parish office from

8:30-3:30, Monday-Friday. Cost: $30 per person or $25/person if you purchase 3 or more tickets. ($10 tickets are also available for those who are working the event that night. The ticket entitles workers to dinner and beverages, but doesn’t include the casino games.) You can view the program booklet, including a listing of our auction items om our parish website. Come and join us! This is our 7th year and it’s always a lot of fun.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY The next meeting of the Prayer Shawl Ministry takes place this Friday, February 9, from 1-3 p.m. in the Granville Room. The love of knitting and crochet combine in a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort. Each shawl begins with a prayer and receives a final blessing on completion. To join, call Mary Milliner at 414-354-1846 or Barb Barron at 414-354-6636.

LECTORS & EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS SCHEDULE Please notify Pat Lehman with any changes, conflicts, or special requests in your schedules for the months of March and April by February 10. Contact Pat at [email protected] or call 414-354-7926 or leave a message in her mailbox by the sacristy. Schedules will be available the weekend of February 17. For parishioners who may be considering participating in the ministry, please contact Pat for more information.

HOLY NAME SOCIETY The Holy Name Society will not hold their monthly breakfast meeting in February. The Society will pray the rosary next Sunday, February 11, before Mass starting at 9:10. All parishioners are invited to pray the Rosary with us.

VOLUNTEER NEEDED Our parishioner, Kathy Handley, has been the coordinator for the last five years of St. Catherine’s designated night to serve at the St. Vincent de Paul Northside Meal Program (formerly St. Gall Meal Program). We are very appreciative of all her good work! Kathy now has to step down and a volunteer is needed for our parish to be able to continue this vital program. The dinner is served on the first Friday of every other month, with the next one planned for March 2. For more information please call Clarice or Carl Geenen at 414-354-9770.

FROM THE DESK OF THE

PARISH DIRECTOR

It goes without saying how much our parish is a caring, responsive, generous giving community. What you do financially and otherwise for the sake of St. Catherine is tremendous and for that I thank you. However, there is another way you can help, another way to assist our brothers and sisters in faith living beyond our parish community.

DECIDE TO LEAD is this year’s Catholic Stewardship Appeal theme. That Appeal serves more than 500,000 Catholics across the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. I wish we could show you the appeal video here in church, but our space just doesn’t allow for that. We do have it posted on our parish website, however. It’s also included in the last Friday Footnotes email. The video provides an intimate and inspiring look at ministries supported by the Appeal.

Each of us is a leader in our own right. God gave us a set of gifts, not to suppress or remain idle, but to be used and extended to help enrich the lives of our brothers and sisters in faith to make for a better parish, a better archdiocese, a better world. Hebrews 13:7 tells us, “Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.” Now it is time to put our faith in to action!

The Appeal is a vehicle for members of our parish community, and the faith community-at-large, to come together in gratitude to share our blessings with others. You will be receiving a mailing from the Archdiocese which outlines just some of the ways your Appeal gifts are at work to support and enhance Catholic life throughout southeastern Wisconsin. I hope something in that material touches you or causes you to pause and reflect on the occasions in your life when you felt blessed, sensed the grace of God, or the hand of the Holy Spirit.

The Appeal is a grassroots effort that depends upon broad, parish-wide participation. To that end, we want to increase our participation rate from the 31% of our parish households who donated last year to 40% this time around. If we do, we should have no problem reaching our $32,000 Appeal goal. Will you please help us do that?

Thanks to those of you who have so faithfully given to the Appeal in past years. I ask that you please continue that generosity this year. For those who have not gifted to the Appeal before, would you please consider contributing this year? Thank you in advance for your generosity.

In Christ’s peace,

Debbie
