In the past, IT was easier. Apps were Windows based, devices were primarily Windows with some exceptions for mobile devices and BYO. And apps and data resided in company data centers, creating a well defined Perimeter that could be managed and secured.

Today, the world is much more complex: Work is distributed (workers/partners/contractors scattered around the globe). Apps and content are moving the Cloud (-- Salesforce, Workday, Concur, Box, etc.): >90% of enterprises now use SaaS apps – with the typical enterprise using 14 SaaS apps, alongside their traditional on-prem. In fact, at a recent Gartner Symposium, Gartner reported that 91% of all on-prem apps in use today, will still be in use in 2023. >60% of employees store and share sensitive company information in cloud storage locations. The discussions that I’ve had with IT leaders has moved from WHY CLOUD just a few years ago to WHY NOT CLOUD today- even in verticals like financial services and healthcare. Ask customers: What’s your SaaS/Cloud approach? Anyone have a Cloud-first policy? What’s driving this (cost, simplicity, etc.)? Employees are accessing them from multiple endpoints - desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, wearables/IoT (devices and/or mobile platforms -- iOS, Android, MSFT). 90% of companies embrace BYOD policies – with a growing number mandating that employees BYOD What’s your BYOD policy? What type of support do you provide to employees – financial and technical for devices? Device plans are quickly expanding beyond tablets and smartphones to include wearables and connected ‘things’ More than 40% of enterprises are kicking the tires of IoT both in the workplace to improve efficiencies and asset utilization and to improve customer experience. Who is testing IoT or wearables? And IT workloads are moving beyond company run data centers to regional branches and a multitude of public and private clouds (AWS, Azure, Google). >half of all workloads will move to the cloud by 2020. Most (80%+) use multiple Cloud/IaaS providers to avoid lock-in. Ask customers: Who here is using a public cloud to manage workloads? What is the primary use case? Production? Cost savings? DR/Business Continuity? Are you embracing a multi-cloud approach? And we know complexity will increase and accelerate, in ways we can’t even predict yet.

In the context of the Citrix vision, we recognize that work is no longer a place. The world has moved beyond the PC. It’s moved outside the datacenter. It’s even moved beyond the cloud. In the future, only one device will matter. And that’s YOU…the user. Work will occur everywhere the USER is. Whether they’re on a laptop on the corporate network or a smartphone on the road or gaining insights through a wearable or connected conference or hospital room. Or whether they’re at a customer or patient site on the other side of town…or the other side of the globe. Work happens wherever the USER is. To improve employee engagement and productivity, the USER needs a digital workspace that is context aware, reliable, and intelligent enough to offer up the right access, the right insight, and the right performance to get the job done.
Most IT Orgs have been now divided into two camps – Traditional Management and MDM management. All of this fragmentation and separation of tools results in headaches for IT and frustration for end users. Organizations today struggle with answering basic questions about their computing environment because of this fragmentation: Questions like – how many users have used a specific piece of software in the past 30 days? We want to build a new application for our sales team which platform an minimum OS versions should we consider using? And if I need to revoke access to an application from a user – which devices were they using to remove the application? These seem like easy things to answer however most organization we talk to struggle with those basic questions. It’s because you have this fragmented management system for your organization. And in addition to not being able to help your business multiple systems require their own complex integration to other systems and tools. Separate Tools, Processes and Support training and it creates a different user experience for your users (how many people have to think and be trained to do something different tools, process based on the type of device you are using). And lastly all of this comes at the cost of having Security as an afterthought, bolted on at the end creating an even worse user experience. This nets to a more complex system that costs organizations more in the long run. As we look at how mobility has evolved, there are several things that have made this increasing complex for IT and causing headaches. IT is having to manage all of these devices. But with mobile devices, laptops, personal devices they are still using separate tools. And often these are still separate teams within the organization handling them. And then they have to figure out how to get their existing infrastructure – email, VPN, intranets – on mobile devices. Not an easy task and it’s very costly and ineffective to maintain separate systems [CLICK] However, There is a better way, The industry is moving towards Unified EndPoint Management

Complexity is really hard to tame but it's also where Citrix can help. Really helping organizations deal with the complexity and pull it together, in a way that creates this new software-defined perimeter and also enables the easy access for people wherever they are around the world, whatever device they come in, to give them contextual access to the apps, information and resources they need. Whether it's a cloud technology coming from one of many clouds, or whether it's traditional on-prem technology, or whether it's mobile technology, they need to access it all in a simple, contextual way, and that is precisely what we do. On one side, IT needs to manage all of those devices and control the policies for access. You need to manage all of the apps, and need to modernize them. We know that app modernization is one of the biggest hurdles that IT organizations face. You also need to have full visibility, and that is the way to turn your company into an intelligent organization. For the end user, for people at work, the most important thing is the unified experience enabling them to access their workspaces. It needs to be familiar and fluid. From the moment they get into the workspace, they need to feel like they have access to everything that they need.

So let’s recap the IT projects that are top of mind for the CIO and CEO, to help achieve the digital transformation priorities. Citrix Workspace is uniquely positioned to deliver delightful, secure workflows from any kind of device, at any kind of location, to all corporate resources, whether in cloud or on-premises. The primary use cases for Citrix Workspace can be categorized into three main buckets; productivity, security and IT efficiency. Lets take a look at each of these in more detail
End users are forced to navigate multiple cloud environments, each with varying user experiences and each requiring different access credentials. Companies are increasingly uncertain who is accessing their apps or where their sensitive data resides. Even when using the most secure cloud offerings, company information remains in browser caches where it can’t be effectively protected. And information technology (IT) professionals are struggling to monitor – let alone manage – it all.
The core technologies of the digital workspace include: VDI and App Virtualization: the ability to centrally manage, provision, secure and deliver all apps – Windows, web & mobile – and Desktops as services. App Delivery Network: ensure the reliability of apps and data with a network that is “app-fluent” and provides the security and performance needed, regardless of the connection. And Software defined wide area networks that replace expensive, fixed circuits and hardware. Enterprise Mobility: Comprehensive management of mobile apps and devices File Sharing: Enterprise grade file sharing and document workflows that is built in the cloud and meets industry’s toughest security compliance standards. Private, Public, Hybrid Clouds: The flexibility to choose the infrastructure deployment that best suits your needs.

Some of our competitors talk about technology in the sterile term of “workload” My friend MarkT used to joke that only software companies and drug dealers refer to their customers as “users”. Truth is … its about people … what they need to accomplish and how they are able to get it done.
