RememberA gerund : the –ing form of a

verb (eg: talking, playing)An infinitive : to + the simple

form of a verb (eg: to talk, to play)

Gerund can be used in many ways, for example :

Gerund as subject ex: Swimming is my hobby.

Gerund as Object: ex: He hates getting up early.

Gerund as Complement ex: My hobby is reading.

When the verb is placed directly behind the verb, the form of gerund should be used to it (Verb). Eg:I am quite used to working hard.

INFINITIVES

To infinitive is the first form of a verb which is accompanied “to”. Some rules of use to infinitive such as :

1. Verb which followed by to infinitive

example :He agreed to go with us.She promised to come early.

2. Verb which can be followed by To Infinitive or Gerund

(can) afford , attempt , deserve , bother forget , intend , like , start

Continue , begin , hate , dread regret , remember , prefer , try

Note :In English , there are few words that can be followed

by Gerund or to infinitive  e.g. : - John stopped studying. (John is not going to

study anymore). - John stopped to study. (John stopped doing

something in order to study).
