What is the German YMCA in London?Founded in 1860, the Association is one of the oldest YMCAs in London and has been part of the English YMCA movement since that time. We are also one of the largest charities with German roots operating in England and support the German-speaking and local community in a variety of ways, from organised events and programmes, assistance to individuals in crisis situations, to material and practical support for other organisations.On the following pages you will find details of our regular programmes and events: our Parent-Toddler group, the au pair Tea Morning, the Anglo-German Circle, Schubertiade Concerts, trips and visits, and much more.Our home has been in the Lancaster Gate, Bayswater area north of Hyde Park in central London since 1959. Here, in Craven Terrace, is our Association’s centre and the Lancaster Hall Hotel. The hotel was opened in 1973 by the German YMCA and offers both the tourist and business traveller an ideal base in central London at affordable prices.

Who can take part in our programmes?We are a Christian movement and stand for respect and freedom for all, tolerance and understanding between people of different faiths, opinions and race.We welcome people of different Christian traditions, those of other faiths and those of none.Although, because of our Association’s heritage, the name contains “German”, “Young” and “Men”, we welcome anyone of any age and nationality, male and female. Our doors are open to all, members and non-members alike.

What other services do we offer?Through our Youth Secretaries and the Programme Secretary (who is also the Association’s Chaplain) we aim to give advice to individuals, to those in crisis situations and those just in need of general advice. We also offer an au pair placement service in cooperation with IN VIA and the VIJ in Germany.We try to create a network of people who, through direct contact with each other, are able to support one another on an ongoing basis outside the activities in our centre.

Cake for the homelessIn January we had another cake sale raising funds for The Connection at St Martin in the Fields. Beforehand we watched Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart and William Holden, which helped to get people here. Peter Clemens helped our Chaplain with the baking and we managed to make a whopping £220. Thank you to the guests and do come again on 7 May to try for a new record!

Rosenmontagslunch On Rosenmontag, the Monday before Lent, we had a traditional German lunch with Bratwurst, mash and

Sauerkraut. We then adjourned the party to the hall. Zofia Pacek won the prize for the best hat and Barbara von Alten led the Quadrille dance. No-one got the moves right and everyone had a lot of fun. A very sociable afternoon!

Text For The Month

May 2019How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no-one like you, and there is no God but you. 2. Samuel 7.22

It is unusual to present the texts in reverse order, but I wanted to quote the above testimony of King David first. Here is a man who really loves and serves God: O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before the word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain (from Psalm 139).

This may from the outset give a better understanding of what is written for April, because David’s God is the same God who visited us in Jesus Christ.

April 2019Siehe, ich bin bei euch alle Tage bis an der Welt Ende. Matthäus 28,20

Es ist vollbracht! (Joh. 19,30). In den vor uns liegenden Wochen entfaltet sich nach der biblischen Überlieferung in der Passion, dem Tod, der Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Christi, der unwiderrufliche Heilsplan Gottes. Ostern ist die Zeit, in der das Geheimnis des Gottessohns erklärt wird. Diese Erklärung richtet sich zunächst an die Jünger Jesu, die beauftragt werden, dieses unbegreifliche Handeln Gottes aller Welt zu verkündigen. Dazu brauchen sie Gottes Hilfe, die ihnen hier zugesagt wird.

Gott hat sich durch Jesus Zeit genommen, ganz Mensch zu sein. Es ist eine einmalige, für alle Zeit gültige Liebestat des Schöpfers an seinem Geschöpf. Es waren die letzten vier Jahre im Leben Jesu, die von uns um die zweitausend Jahre später immer noch wie

ein Heute begegnen. Wir bemühen uns nach wie vor darum, das uns Unverständliche zu verstehen. “Die Botschaft hör ich wohl, allein mir fehlt der Glaube” (Goethe).

Wie oft habe ich meine Gedanken zum Ostergeschehen zu Papier gebracht. Aber: “Im Leben fängt man dann und wann wieder mal von vorne an” (Wilhelm Busch). Ich denke in viele Richtungen, und entscheide mich, einen, für das menschliche Mitein-ander äußerst wichtigen Aspekt etwas hervorzuheben. Dabei will ich mich nicht bei der fruchtlosen Debatte über die Begriffe ‘Ende der Welt’, ‘Ende der Zeit’, ‘Ewigkeit’ aufhalten. Es sind Vorstellungen, die uns an die Grenzen unseres Verstehens bringen. Möge da ein Gespräch mit dem in der Fantasie entstandenen Teddybär Winnie the Pooh genügen: “Nicht wahr, wir sind Freunde für immer?” fragt Piglet. “Noch länger” antwortet Pooh.

Als ich ein kleiner Junge war, wurde es wohl einmal unumgänglich, eine Nacht bei einer Familie mit einem gleichaltrigen Jungen zu verbringen. Zu Bett gebracht, hörte ich die Mutter mit ihrem Kind beten: “Ich bin klein, mein Herz ist rein, soll niemand drin wohnen als Papa und Mama allein”. Das hier etwas falsch war, hat mich bis heute beschäftigt und auch die richtigen Worte ‘als Jesus allein’ in Zweifel gebracht. Im ersten Fall wird Gott bewusst beiseite geschoben. Im zweiten Fall bleibt der Mitmensch unbeachtet. Für wie viele Menschen ist dies wohl das einzige Gebet, das sie ins spätere Leben begleitet? Hier wird das menschliche ‘Ich’-Verhalten gefördert. Für Eltern unterstreicht dies Beispiel die Erkenntnis, dass Kinder mehr wahrnehmen als es Erwachsene vermuten.

Als junger Mann verbrachte ich mit größtem Unbehagen eine Woche in einer Bibelschule im Lake District. Gedankenlos, und zu den unpassendsten Gelegenheiten, wurde da unter anderen das Lied ‘Jesus liebt mich ganz gewiss, denn die Bibel sagt mir

dies’ gesungen. An der Aussage selbst ist nichts falsch. Doch konnte ich das ständige ‘ liebt mich’ so nicht akzeptieren und fragte im Stillen ‘ja und?’ Man feierte Christ zu sein, aber eine Antwort auf die ‘ganz gewisse Liebe’ blieb aus. Ein junger Mann schwärmte vom deutschen Wein mit dem Zusatz: “Jetzt bin ich Christ und trinke keinen Wein mehr”. Die Antwort: “Das hat dir Jesus aber nicht verboten” bin ich ihm schuldig geblieben.

Was haben diese Beispiele mit der Zusage im Monatsspruch zu tun? Gar nichts, und das ist das fatale. Christus ist in der Dreieinigkeit Gottes allgegenwärtig, aber ist er bei uns, in unserem egoistischen Verhalten? Nein, das glaube ich nicht. Als Jesus an Petrus die Frage stellte: “Simon Jona, hast du mich lieb?” und der Jünger antwortete: “Ja, Herr, du weißt, das ich dich liebhabe”, sprach Jesus zu ihm: “Weide meine Schafe” (nach Joh. 20,15-17). Die Liebe Jesu erweist sich

in seiner Zuwendung, in der täglichen Begleitung seiner Nachfolger. Unsere Liebe zu ihm erweist sich in der Erfüllung seines Auftrages, und das bedeutet Handeln zum Wohl des Nächsten, die Hilfe ohne Ansicht der Person, unsere Verantwortung füreinander. Dafür gibt es kein Programm, kein klar umrissenes Format, keine Perfektion. Es bleibt nicht aus, dass wir da stolpern. Dann ist Christus bei uns.

“Gehe nicht aus der Welt, ohne deine Liebe und Ehrfurcht für den Stifter des Christen-tums durch irgendetwas öffentlich bezeugt zu haben”. Das schrieb Matthias Claudius an seinen Sohn Johannes. Gibt es ein besseres Zeugnis als die hilfreiche Hinwendung zu unseren Mitmenschen? Antwort auf Gottes Liebe ist unsere tätige Liebe, zugewendet dem Nächsten, hier, heute.

Und was hat das Bild mit dem Text zu tun? Es soll ein Sinnbild sein, im engen Zusammenhang mit einem Spruch aus dem Zululand: “Gott besucht uns oft, aber meistens sind wir nicht zu Hause”. Das wiederum unterstreicht den Monatsspruch: “Ich bin bei euch”. Dazu gehört eine offene Tür, ja mehr, eine Einladung. So wie in den Osterberichten zwei um Jesus trauernde Jünger auf dem Weg nach Emmaus den vermeintlich Fremden einladen: “Bleibe bei uns; denn es will Abend werden” (Lukas 24,29). Wenn niemand zu Hause ist, liegt eben der Blumenstrauß des Besuchers unbeachtet vor der Tür und verwelkt.

Wer hier nicht mitmachen will, braucht seine Tür nicht zu verriegeln. Gott drängt sich nicht gegen unseren Willen auf. Was für die Jünger/Apostel eine Zusage war, ist für uns ein Angebot. Wir können es annehmen oder ablehnen, das ist unsere Freiheit mit allen ihren Konsequenzen. Wer aber mit Paul Gerhardt fragt: “Wie soll ich dich empfangen und wie begegn ich dir”, dem wird Gott den Weg weisen.

Au Pair ServicesThe German YMCA offers an au pair placement service in co-operation with the IN VIA and VIJ associations in Germany. To find the right family for the right au pair and vice versa is one of our aims. To facilitate exchange between cultures is another. With our programmes, which include social-cultural events especially addressed to au pairs, we aim to give a broad experience of country, history and culture. We also offer the intercultural qualification course “Dare to Differ”.

Telephone ContactWith the support of the trustees of the former German Old People’s Home “Homelands” we have a project for anybody who is a native German speaker and lives in the UK. If you can not meet other German speakers in person this is an opportunity to talk to someone in your language. For further information please phone our office and we will put you in contact with Ursula Mitchell.

Volunteer Placement ServicesIn co-operation with other organisations we offer young people the opportunity to volunteer abroad for a period of three to twelve months. Project themes could include: youth, sport, culture, social care, environment. Our aim is to provide young people with an intercultural learning experience and to encourage social integration. For further information, or if your organisation would like to host a volunteer, please contact Alice Melsheimer by phone or e-mail.
