D. von - of For a proper name you can add an –s to the name to say that the item belongs to someone: Das ist Phillips Haus. Adding the –s does not work if you have something other than a proper name, e.g. ‘der Schüler’. In that case you can use the word ‘von’. For instance, to say ‘This is the student’s car’ you can say ‘Das ist das Auto von dem Schüler.’ We will talk about ‘von’ later in this course when we talk about another grammatical case that uses ‘dem’ in the place of ‘der’.
