RHODES

The largest island of the Dodecanese group is the meeting point for three continents – Europe, Asia and Africa. Its geographical position has insured the island would have a continuous history of development and commerce. This cosmopolitan island has outdone itself in regards to catering to its massive tourist influx. Archaeologically Rhodes supports some of the finest sites to be seen ranging from ancient to medieval. The impressive Castle of the Knights of St. John will probably be the visitor’s first experience that Rhodes has to offer. Steeped in mythology and fact, the harbor area was once the home of the Colossus of Rhodes, one the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. A stroll around town should include the Castle, the Archaeological Museum, now housed in what was once the Knights hospital, the synagogue and the Turkish baths. The next most popular site is the Ancient Site of Lindos located on the south coast situated on a hill the views are well worth the climb. The village of Lindos is host to many souvenir and craft shops. The nearby beach is a pleasant place to spend the day. There are regular bus services and taxis will readily undertake the 50-minute drive. A shopper’s haven, the old town offers a wide selection of items including jewelry, leather goods, carvings and ceramics. The new town contains some of the world’s most famous designer apparel. Not to overlooked are the furs, the Rhodians are known to be some of the best craftsmen in this field. Dining can be tricky. Unfortunately too many establishments in their desire to accommodate their multinational visitors have attempted to imitate the cuisine of other nations, sacrificing both quality and appeal. Good food can be found however at a price. Rhodes has many popular beaches close to the town area and beyond. Both Faliraki and Trianta are a short taxi ride away and offer water sports. Scuba diving is available at Mandraki and a number of other areas of the island.
