W h e r e ? - Bath, England, UK.

W h y ? - Bath in itself is a wonderful place - Nourished by natural hot springs, Bath offers a unique experience with stunning architecture, great shopping and iconic attractions.

It’s a perfect place to be a photographer, with interesting photo opportunities around each corner.

We recommend visiting Bath Abbey. Founded in the 7th century, reorganised in the 10th century and rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries, it is one of the largest examples of Perpendicular Gothic architecture in the West Country.Entry is free however voluntary contributions are welcomed to help the building to be maintained.

When stopping for lunch, why not try The Pump Room, admittedly a little pricey, but most definitely worth it with its high roofs, chandeliers and live piano music as you eat, it’s a brilliant experience.

W h e r e ? - Tropical World, Leeds, England, UK.

W h y ? - Tropical World is a wonderful miniature zoo in the heart of Roundhay park. Full of amazing tropical creatures such as these giant butterflies, it also accommodates meerkats, lemurs and other animals. Definitely worth a visit for the brilliant wildlife photography opportunities, and with the butterflies being so tame, it’s easy!

Roundhay park itself is one of the largest in Europe. The park comprises over 700 acres of parkland, lakes and woodland. The Park also includes scented gardens for the blind, National Plant Collections, Canal Gardens, and the Monet and Alhambra Gardens, all of which attract visitors all year round.

Whatever the time of year, there is always something happening. Definitely a full day out!

W h e r e ? - Newport University, City Centre Campus, Newport, Wales UK.

W h y ? - The recently opened City Centre campus is a merge of the universities art, and business schools. The building is a beautiful, open planned space with gorgeous wood furnishings. The bottom floor is open to the public, it also displays a lot of the students work, so it’s very interesting, and worth a trip if you’re in the area.

While you’re in Newport, a good place to also visit is Caerleon, a village just a small drive out of the centre (or bus!). Once a Roman Legionary Fortress, linked with King Arthur, rich in history and legend, Caerleon has lots to offer. Restaurants, shops, and museums, it’s a very calm and quiet village, packed full of quaint beauty for everyone to enjoy.

Make sure you visit the amphitheatre, a small walk from the centre this is a very impressive site, and great for photography!

“I prefer winter and fall, when you feel the bone structure of the landscape, the loneliness of it, the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it,

the whole story doesn’t show”

W h a t ? - Britain’s Blizzard

This winter Britain was hit by the worst snowstorm since 1927, with a foot falling in some places in under an hour, and 4 feet over night in others.

It caused a standstill in traffic, trains and at airports, but to photographers it was a dream - an opportunity not to miss, wellies were donned and paths dug out to get stills of the beautiful landscape.

19

Page 21: Geotography

The extent of Britain’s winter whiteout is revealed in a

stunning picture from space, received today by scientists

in Dundee. The nationwide blanket of snow and ice came as temperatures

dipped to as low as minus 18°C.The image, sent by NASA’s Terra

satellite, shows the UK framed by cloud sweeping in from the East.

W h e r e ? - Bristol Zoo, Bristol, England, UK.

W h y ? - Bristol Zoo is a bit out of the way from Bristol centre, and a bus or taxi is definitely needed - but it’s worth it. With a wide selection of animals it’s a brilliant day out, and a great chance to get some close up animal photography.

We recommend going in the colder months, as it’s all the same, just a bit quieter! Some of the animals are more still and easier to shoot than others, but that’s part of the fun.

Make sure you check out the lovebirds, they make for some excellent shots as most of the time they’re already posing for them.

Bristol Zoo can be a little pricey, but if you bring your own lunch, and get hold of a 2-4-1 voucher, then it’s only about £22 for two people.

W h e r e ? - Pen Y Fan, Breacon, Wales, UK.

W h y ? - Pen Y Fan is the highest mountain in South Wales. Situated in the Brecon Beacons it is easier than you’d think to climb, and actually only takes about an hour of gradual climbing. One of the best times to walk up is just before sunrise, then it’s just a waiting game for the sun to rise about the clouds or over the mountains.

Another good time to go (for the more adventurous) is when it’s snowing. A more challenging task, but it’s beautiful looking over the snow covered hills.

Make sure you plan ahead carefully, in order to not get stuck or stranded. Check the weather conditions, plan your route, charge mobiles, and take food supplies etc, you don’t want to be caught short as it’s cold at the top with steep drops at the edges, so be careful!

W h e r e ? - Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan, Wales, UK.

W h y ? - This is a beautiful spot that cannot be beaten on a sunny winters day. With views over the entire of Cardiff so you can never get bored - it’s also a popular picnic spot in the summer with plenty of space for everyone.

If you look to the south you can see as far as Penarth, the barrage, and Cardiff Bay. However if you look to the east, you can see Cardiff centre, Llandaff, and other towns of Cardiff, and lastly if you look to the North, you’ll see as far as Castle Coch, Cardiff’s famous castle.

Keep a look out for interesting birds and other wildlife - there are a lot of mole hills, and other wildlife evidence, so keep your eyes peeled for a one off photo opportunity!

To get up here, you’ll most likely have to drive, as it’s about a half hour drive from Cardiff centre, but it’s definitely worth it for the views.
