COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of the GSH Cooperative Education program is to provide students with a meaningful work experience in an out-of-school work environment. The co-op program enables students to further develop the necessary skills and acquire appropriate work habits necessary for successful employment. Students will be placed in a work environment where their learning will be linked to their in-school course.GSH Co-op allows students to earn Cooperative Education credits through a combination of on-line/classroom activities and assignments, homework and demonstrations of learning that will be assessed at the work place. Credits will be based on the students’ ability to demonstrate the expectations from workplace and a related Ontario high school credit course. A final mark will be determined through the assessment of the students’ in-school learning and their practical application of the related course expectations in the workplace.
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS:
Demonstrate an understanding of the workplace Essential Skills necessary for success in life, school and work.
Identify and describe their interests, skills, personal characteristics, and achievements, and use this information to determine future goals
Create and maintain a personal portfolio that includes résumés, cover letters, and thank-you letters for the work search
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of selected fields of work and selected occupations
Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of selected postsecondary education and training Options.
Demonstrate an understanding of businesses and organizations, their operating concepts, and workplace-related legislation and issues
Demonstrate effective use of literacy and numeracy strategies to support the application of the workplace Essential Skills (e.g., a pre-reading strategy for reading text; a calculation strategy for managing money) to complete specific tasks in authentic or simulated workplace settings

Unit 2: PLACEMENT - learning in the workplace Students earn cooperative education credits by fulfilling course expectations and accumulating a specific number of hours in the workplace.
Students should demonstrate related course expectations in the workplace with a high level of understanding and skill.
