GEORGE P. MCANDREWS—ST. MARY’S CLASS OF 1953

A LOVE OF LEARNING—A LOVE OF SERVING—-A LOVE OF LIFE

On October 22, 2013, George McAn-

drews was chosen by and featured in Inter-

Continental Finance Magazine as one of 26

leading lawyers in the United States for

2013. These lawyers are chosen because of

superior qualifications, excellent client ser-

vice, depth of knowledge and good practice.

George P. McAndrews’ life, from his

large Catholic family upbringing, to his

memories of St. Mary’s High School, to his

assorted jobs, to his days of service to his

country in the Navy, to his college days at

Notre Dame (twice), to a highly successful

law career, to his own large and loving fam-

ily, is a story that has an abundant supply of

drama, comedy, and suspense.

George was born in Clinton on July

29, 1935, the seventh of nine children born

to Dr. Patrick and Ruth McAndrews. Grow-

ing up four blocks from St. Mary’s, George

started working at age 10 and hasn’t

stopped yet. His first job was at the root

beer drive through where he earned 20

cents an hour. His income took an unex-

pected leap to 35 cents an hour the next

year when he took at job at Marcucci’s Res-

taurant scrubbing macaroni pans. His young

working career included telegram delivery,

newspaper carrier, movie usher and door-

man.

His days at St. Mary’s High School

occupy a special place in George’s heart. He

and fifteen classmates were great athletes

in basketball, track and football. A pivotal

point for George and his teammates was

their 1953 Iowa basketball championship

victory at the Iowa Field House in Iowa City

when tiny St. Mary’s defeated Ottumwa High

School.

As for his St. Mary’s teachers, George

recalls, “the many good nuns who sacrificed

their lives to educate me and my class-

mates.” Reflecting on those school days,

George recalls Sr. Joan Rita from 1st grade,

Sr. Clarice who taught him to play the piano,

and Sr. Charmaigne who taught biology.

George credits the nuns who provided him

with an excellent education to his prepara-

tion to attend Notre Dame where he re-

ceived his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical

Engineering as well as his Juris Doctorate.

He entered Notre Dame after high

school and when funds ran low, he and his

brother Tom, joined the Navy to obtain GI

Bill funds. While in the South Pacific they

witnessed the detonation of hydrogen and

atomic test bombs while aboard the USS

Estes. Their ship was located 30 miles from

the test site and with eyes closed and his

head in the crook of his elbow, George re-

lates that he could see through his arm as if

it was an x-ray.

After serving his country, George re-

turned to Notre Dame to finish his education

and to begin his law career. In 1988 George

founded McAndrews, Held and Malloy Law

Firm which is one of the most highly re-

garded law teams of intellectual property

attorneys, agents and technology specialists

in the United States. During his 51-year ca-

reer, George “has represented clients in

multi-billion dollar patent disputes and has

won numerous multi-million dollar awards

and settlements for his clients.”

“If you look carefully at the huge picture of the University of Iowa field house (displayed at

Central Catholic Auditorium), you can see only one player with ‘black’ tennis shoes. That is

me. I asked my father if I could get white shoes..they cost $12 and black shoes cost $8. Guess

what-I ended up wearing the black tennis shoes that stand out in that huge picture….”

“All of my brothers

and sisters were

educated at St. Mary’s

and all have or are

living out their

Catholic faith learned

at home and at St.

Mary’s. For that I

am grateful.”

In 1983 George found himself tackling a case that would

last 15 years and would involve his father’s chosen profession of chiropractor. An article in the Clinton Herald outlines

the case of Wick vs. AMA anti-trust. George was successful in winning the case “the results of which brought about

third party payment status and chiropractic inclusion of Medicare and other insurance programs.”

George and his wife, Nancy, have six children (one deceased) and nineteen grand-children all that live within

20 minutes of them. George is the ever-active grandpa who was featured in a Wall Street Journal article which in turn

led to an interview on NBC’s Today Show that showed the importance of grandfathers in the raising of children.

George doesn’t appear to be slowing down and goes to work every day. His humor, his love of his Catholic faith and

exceptional work ethic are qualities to be embraced by all of us.

GEORGE MCANDREWS, CONT. FROM PAGE 1

Alma Nichols, OLA 1939, could be called our alumni

historian. For over 10 years she has spent countless hours perusing the local papers and clipping

articles and obituaries of Clinton Catholic School Alumni. Alma was one of eight children, who at-

tended St. Irenaeus Church. Alma spent her high school years at Our Lady of Angels Academy. She

fondly remembers her class of 18 girls, 11 of whom were boarders from the Chicago area. Alma’s

teachers were Sisters of Charity, BVM, and she especially remembers what Sr. Mary St. Matthew,

Dean of the school and English and Religion teacher told her students, “most of you could write a

book.” Alma chuckles as she thinks about that statement and how prophetic it turned out to be.

In 2005, Alma became an author. Using the pen name, Lotta Dough, Alma has written 20 books about her

observations of life and her own life experiences. She has written her memories of St. Irenaeus Church, Fr. Tony Herold

(former pastor of Prince of Peace Parish) and random memories from Lyons, Main Avenue, and inspirational words of

wisdom. Book number six is entitled Alive at 85. Alma’s Catholic faith is very important to her and it shows in her writ-

ings and how she leads her life to the fullest.

Alma was employed with Lyon’s Drug store as a clerk for 46 years. Upon her retirement, she went to work for

our parish office. Alma’s sister, Mardell Nichols Cavanagh (SMHS 1933) passed away in 1997. Alma became a huge

part of her sisters’ children’s lives. She considers her three nephews and one niece to be “her children”. Alma has trav-

eled on a Caribbean cruise and spends many hours every week playing bridge and 500 in several card clubs. There

appears to be little that Alma hasn’t seen or done and at age 92, she clearly has shown that you are never too old to

try your hand at one of your dreams. Thank you, Alma, for all you do for our Alumni.

2013 Annual Alumni Appeal Dear Fellow Alumni, I recently had the pleasure of touring Prince of Peace Catholic School, as well as meeting with some students and staff. I am pleased to tell you students and parents in the Clinton area continue to have a high quality education available, embracing Catholic values and high academic standards. The success rate of graduates is excellent. I know you value the uniqueness of a Catholic education, and we are for-tunate to have that tradition continue in our com-munity. In our 2013 Annual Alumni Appeal, we re-ceived over $25,000 in gifts from over 106 respon-dents-thank you for your generosity. I urge you to continue to support Prince of Peace Catholic School with a contribution this year, and hopefully every year. I assure you every dollar is critical to the impor-

tant mission of Prince of Peace Catholic School.

Memorials Finish Computer Project

Prince of Peace Catholic School Computer Project was des-

ignated as the recipient of two memorials. During their time

of sorrow, these families have chosen to remember their loved

one’s deep faith and appreciation of Catholic education with a

memorial gift that will impact the lives of our students for

years to come.

Bruce Kokjohn, 50, of Clinton passed away on January 29,

2014. Bruce had served on our school’s Technology Commit-

tee for a time. He and his wife, Mary Beth, have three daugh-

ters, Rebecca, Christina (POPCP 2011), Jacquelyn (POPCS

2014) and one grandson, Owen.

Elsie Aquilani, 93, of St. Charles, MO, passed away on Feb-

ruary 6, 2014. Elsie’s son, Ricci, serves on the Clinton Catho-

lic School Foundation. Ricci and his wife, Barb, have two

daughters, Ariana (POPCP 2011) and Andrea (POPCS 2014).

The Computer Project began about 18 months ago and con-

sisted of the replacement of existing computers, upgrading the

software, and installation of wireless internet. Over 50 com-

puters were replaced with updated software by fall of 2013.

The funds from these memorial gifts, combined with the gifts

from businesses and individuals will make it possible for wire-

less internet to be installed this summer.

We thank the Kokjohn and Aquilani families, and all those

who contributed to this much needed project. Students will

now have greater access to technology in our ever-changing

world.

Mary Juist Memorial Scholarship

Established in Foundaton

The Mary Juist Memorial Scholarship has been established

in the Prince of Peace Catholic School Foundation. Mary

(Beecher) Juist was a 1942 graduate of St. Mary’s High

School and passed away on March 29, 2013. Mary’s children,

Ron Juist, David Juist, Maureen Bramley, Margie Lehmkuhl

and Norbert Juist, decided to honor their memories with a

named scholarship in the Foundation.

Mary was an avid Cub fan and Irish sports fan. Mary

could be found sitting just inside the gym at Central Catholic

Auditorium offering a smile and hello to everyone as they

entered. Her daughter Margie shared, “Mom loved watching

her grandchildren, Ben (POPCP 2008), Megan (POPCP 2010)

and Jacob (POPCP 2012) play sports and keeping in touch

with her classmates.”

Every year a scholarship in Mary’s name will be given to a

Prince of Peace Catholic High School student. Go Irish!

LITTLE AND BIG BUDDIES

POP STUDENTS WILL LEAVE

YOU SPEECHLESS

For the fourth year in a row, Prince

of Peace Catholic School will be repre-

sented at the annual Iowa All-State Speech

Festival. High school English teacher and

speech coach, Kathy Andrews, is thrilled to

make a fourth trip to the festival held this

year at the University of Northern Iowa.

Senior, Noah Strausser, will be performing

“Who I’d Be” from Shrek the Musical in the

category of Solo Musical Theater. Only 6%

of speech groups or individuals are chosen

for the annual festival. This year Prince of

Peace School had twenty participants in

competitive speech.

Grandparents Lunch—March 20th

Ask any senior at Prince of Peace Catholic School who

their “Little Buddy” is, and a smile will appear. Ask any first

grader at Prince of Peace Catholic School who their “Big Buddy”

is, and a smile will appear. For 5 years, 1st grade teacher,

Christi Goldbeck has incorporated her Big Buddy/Little Buddy

project into her curriculum which pairs one of her students with

a senior student. These groups spend quality time together

several times each month engaging in a variety of activities

such as art, math, reading and outdoor games. Relationships

are born and nurtured through these gatherings.

For two former buddies, this relationship has continued

long past graduation. Travis Witt (POPCP 2012) knows how

important he was to his buddy from the 2011-2012 school

year. Marcus Blount, now in third grade, was Travis’s little

buddy. Travis and Marcus have stayed in contact with each

other over the past two years. Travis, a student at Clinton Com-

munity College, recently visited Marcus at school and brought

him a favorite lunch. As expected, Marcus is one of Travis’s

biggest fans and has attended and cheered on his big buddy

who plays for the CCC basketball team. Mrs. Goldbeck com-

ments that she sees this program as a win-win situation. Her

students “love knowing a big kid at the school and the big kids

talk to their buddies as equals.”

Catholic School Pro-Life committee are all smiles

as they continue their efforts for the unborn. The

group meets during their lunch hour and have

sponsored speakers and events for the school.

The group’s moderator is

Gerilyn (Sullivan) Jacobs, MSCA 1977.

HOMECOMING 2014

Middle school students admit they are a “wee bit Irish”

during the annual Homecoming hall decorating.

Our future Irish show their pride at the

Homecoming game.

The winter of 2014 will go down in the record books as one of

the snowiest and definitely, one of the coldest winters. Fresh-

man, Katie Campbell doesn’t let the weather stop her from get-

ting outside during PE class to try some cross-country skiing.
