Household of George Augustus Frederick, Prince of Wales
(from 1812, Prince Regent) 1762-1820
Beginning on 5 January 1772, George, Prince of Wales received annual payments
out of the Civil List for the expenses of his household and person. From 1773 to 1777
these totaled £7,346 10s plus extraordinaries. By 1782 this had risen to £20,204 12s 7d
per annum, by 1789 to £60,000 per annum.1 These sums proved inadequate to supply the
Prince’s artistic and domestic expenditure. In 1795, at the time of his marriage to
Caroline of Brunswick, Parliament increased his annual revenue from £73,000 per annum
to £138,000. Parliament also provided £27,000 for jewels and plate, £25,000 for
expenses associated with the marriage, but £65,000 of the annual revenue was to go to
the payment of his considerable debts. Even these amounts proved insufficient, so the
Prince was granted an additional £60,000 per annum in 1803 for three years.2

Civil List, plus £12,000 per annum out of the Duchy of Cornwall from 1783.
