    OPERATING PRINCIPLE

The operating cycle begins with the lifting phase ofthe ram (ram weight, ram pin and piston rod areforged in one piece). Valve P in the pressure line isopened and valve R in the return line is closed. Whenthe preset stroke position point is reached, thevalves are automatically reversed allowing the ramto start its downward stroke. The ram is acceleratedby pressurized gas above the piston and reaches amaximum acceleration of 2g. This reduces thenecessary maximum stroke and at the same time increases the blow rate of the hammer. After impactthe cycle repeats itself automatically.

The ram is guided by oil lubricated upper and lower bearings (some types have greased lower bearings). This eliminates wear on the ram. The hammeroperates under every inclination, even horizontallythanks to the cap pressure.

On impact the ram strikes either a solid steel anvil(for steel piles), or a pile cap (for concrete piles). The pile cap contains a hammer cushion on top anda pile cushion at the bottom.

The hammer can operate leader guided or freehanging. For the latter the hammer is equipped witha pile sleeve for sufficient stability when driving.

    UNIVERSALAND UNIQUE

The hydraulically operatedHydrohammer combines asolid one-piece ram with afully enclosed hammer housing. The result is an elegant yet robust and reliable hammer. Theunique design permitsuniversal use.

The hammer is suitable forall types of piling andfoundation works rangingfrom impact sensitiveconcrete piles, to large andlong offshore caisson piles, and also includesunderwater rock breakingat full energy.

The concept is based onmore than 30 years of construction andoperational experiencewith hydraulically operatedimpact hammers.

  • TWO SERIES OF HAMMERS:S AND SC

The IHC Hydrohammers areavailable in two series; the S and SCseries. The ram weight of the S series isrelatively light and the hammer gets agreater part of its energy fromacceleration due to the gas pressure ontop of the piston. This makes the hammer ideal fordriving steel piles, such as casings,H-beams and offshore piles.

The SC series have a heavier ramweight and lower acceleration becauseof the lower cap pressure.

With the same stroke as the S series, the SC series have a lower impactvelocity, making these hammers thebetter choice for driving concrete piles,or when a universal hammer for various types of piles is required.

    DRIVEABILITY

A proper choice for a hammer canonly be made after carefulinterpretation and assessment of theproperties of the soil. To support itsusers IHC has a staff of experiencedcivil engineers to assist them withpre- and post-pile driving analyses. These driveability studies are carriedout using the most sophisticatedcomputer programs (IHCWAVE andTNOWAVE).

These programs are also usedto enable IHC design engineers tooptimize hammer components.

    RAKED PILES

By adjusting the gas pressure abovethe rams piston head the ratio betweenthe energy delivered by gravity and bygas energy can be adjusted. When driving raked piles the gaspressure is increased to compensatefor the loss of gravity energy. Batteredpiles up to a rake of 1:1 (45 degrees)can be driven at almost full energy. It is even possible to drive horizontally. In this case it is only the gas pressurewhich accelerates the ram.

    SHEET PILES

For driving sheet piles both the S seriesand SC series can be equipped withsheet legs. These legs give thehammer the required stability whendriving sheet piles in a free riding mode. This eliminates the necessity of aleader and driving can be done with theaid of a regular crane.

    OFFSHORE / UNDERWATEROPERATIONS

The enclosed hammer housing makesthe hammer suitable for underwateroperations. Compressed air inside thehammer housing and at the location ofimpact is required to prevent waterentrainment.

    ROCK BREAKING

If equipped with a chisel set, theHydrohammer is transformed into ahighly effective and powerful rockbreaker. As the S series have thehighest impact velocity, this type is themost suitable for producing the highimpact force necessary for breakingrock, cemented layers, concrete floors, and slabs.

The record water depth for an IHCHydrohammer is 900 meters in the Gulfof Mexico. Driving at even greaterdepths can be expected in the nearfuture.

For deep water applications a specialair valve is available whichautomatically adjusts the housingpressure to the prevalent hydrostaticwater pressure outside the hammer.

    SERVICE / TRAINING

Worldwide both IHC andIHC Hydrohammer are well-known fortheir reliability and the excellent qualityof service and support, and theworldwide distribution network. All dealers have experienced serviceengineers and have a wide variety ofspare parts to supply customersimmediately from stock.

As a further service to customers,IHC Hydrohammer also providesvarious training courses at their own testfacility at Kinderdijk. These coursesenable customers to becomeacquainted with the equipment andoperating principles and provide detailedtraining to the customers serviceengineers.

Courses can also be tailor-made to meetcustomer needs.

    HAMMER CONTROL ANDMONITORING

All hydraulic functions of the hammersare electronically controlled andmonitored. This ensures optimumcontrol of the energy, blow rate and anoptimum transfer of the energy into thepile head.

Safety features are built into thecontrols. They include protectionagainst too high or too low a ramstroke, too high level and incorrecthammer/pile positioning.

The electronic signals from the hammersensors and from the power packcontrols are fed into a single controlbox. In the event of a malfunction thecontrol box software assists in solvingthe problem. The piling data can beprinted on site or stored in a datalogger. One of the unique features of the IHCHydrohammer design, besides itssturdiness and high level ofcontrollability, is its ability to facilitateextraction of earlier driven casings.

For extraction a special clamp systemrigidly connects the pile head andhammer housing. Line pull from thecrane is transferred to the pile via theclamp. High frequency operation of thehammer with extremely low energy perblow reduces frictional resistance, enabling pile extraction at crane loadssignificantly lower than used forconventional static pulling.

Under extremely difficultcircumstances it is even possible togenerate an additional upward force byimpacting the hammer housing in anupward direction. This can set ajammed pile into motion. This combination of features meansthat only one hammer is needed forboth driving and extracting, makingthem ideal for handling cast-in-situ(vibro) piles.

A top stroke limiter is standardequipment on the S-35, S-70, S-90,S-120 and S-150 models.

    NOISE INSULATIONENCLOSURES

A new feature of the Hydrohammer isthe possibility to equip the hammer witha noise reduction package. This consists of an enclosure at thepoint of impact and bellow sectionsaround the pile. Their design wasdeveloped in collaboration with theDutch Research Institute TNO/TPD. Noise levels can be reduced to lessthan 80 dB(A) at 7 meters, which is agreat improvement in noise emissionlevels for todays building sites.
