“WALKING WITH THE WERGAIA PEOPLE”
JOANNE HARRISON-CLARKE ©
Fifty guests from 18
agencies across the
Wimmera Southern
Mallee gathered at Glen
Logan recently for a
dinner of ‘Cultural Insight,
Identity and Reflection’.
Hosted by Wimmera
Primary Partnership, the
purpose of the evening was to support health service CEO’s, Board Members and
Executives to gain valuable insight into the cultural awareness training being delivered to
their staff in establishing the foundations for culturally safe practices.
Evidence suggests that to improve the health outcomes of our First Nation’s
Peoples the action of establishing culturally safe practices which recognise and
respect cultural identities and safely meet their needs, expectations and rights must
be a foundation for all service providers.
The night was opened with a Welcome to Country from Aunty Hazel McDonald and emceed by 3KND radio host Dylan Clarke
with Department of Health and Human Services Manager of Aboriginal Engagement, Marcus Clarke as a Special Guest to offer
insight into the direction of the Department.
Joanne Harrison-Clarke delivered a shortened version of her cultural training package, Yanng Ngalung Maligundidj meaning to
Walk with the Wergaia People, to a standing ovation and
positive support and feedback has since ensued.
Yanng Ngalung Maligundidj is available for free to Wimmera
PCP member agencies and their staff working in the health
and wellbeing sector. For further information please contact
Felicity Johns at
The next training session will be held at the Centre for
Participation (formerly Wimmera HUB) 39 Urquhart Street,
Horsham on Friday 9 December from 9.30am to 1.30pm. To
reserve your place please contact the Centre on (03) 5382 5607.
Geoff and the staff from Wimmera PCP
would like to wish everyone a fantastic
and safe Christmas - the Wimmera PCP
office will be closed from December 22nd
and will re-open on January 9th 2017
I came away with a
greater understanding of
the journey of Aboriginal
people in Australia and
the challenges health
services face in providing
appropriate services for
all members of our local
community.

INTEGRATED HEALTH PROMOTION
AND PREVENTION PLANNING
WORKSHOP # 1
REVIEWING DATA TO HELP
SET PRIORITIES
On Tuesday 29 November, Anita Thomas
facilitated the first of four planning workshops
to begin setting directions and priorities for
our 2017-21 Integrated Health Promotion
(IHP) Plan.
A total of 35 people from a number of our
member agencies including local government,
health services and a range of community
organisations, made valuable contributions
towards the development of our new plan
with the assistance of WPCP and DHHS staff.
The first workshop was based around
‘reviewing data to help set priorities’ and
involved looking back at key achievements
from the past four years including reflecting
on what worked well, what could be
strengthened and if there is still work to do on
our current priorities – healthy eating, physical
activity and social connection.
Anita provided a snap shot of the new data
recently released in the Wimmera PCP
Population Health and Wellbeing Profile
2016 including demographic information
(population, age, etc), disease data and risk
and protective factors, which allowed the
group to start considering where our future
priorities may lie.
The remaining three workshops are scheduled
from February – April 2017:
Workshop 2 – *Tuesday, 7 February 2017* –
determining priorities for the 2017-21 IHP
plan Facilitator: Anita Thomas
Workshop 3 – Tuesday, 28 February 2017 – mapping determinants using a systems approach. Facilitator: Deakin University
Workshop 4 – *Thursday, 20 April 2017* – priorities to actions/timelines. Facilitator: Anita Thomas
* Please note: Workshop 2 and 4 are in place of our bi-monthly WPCP Health Promotion Network Meetings.
WIMMERA DRUG ACTION TASK FORCE SOCIAL MEDIA CHALLENGE
For the month of December it was suggested to have a Social
Media Challenge. This challenge would involve people
abstaining from posting images of themselves or others with
alcohol in the picture. It would also involve not posting quotes,
etc encouraging alcohol consumption.
The idea would be to encourage positive role modelling and
reduce slightly the normalisation of alcohol consumption;
especially excess consumption. Many people on social media may
be unaware of the negative influence they could be having on others (including
children of theirs and their friends) and themselves in referencing excess alcohol
consumption such as the image featured here.
It must be emphasised this challenge is not about encouraging abstinence from alcohol but just not posting on
social media about it.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF PERSON’S WITH
DISABILITIES
Theme for IDPD 2016: “Achieving 17 Goals for the
Future We Want”
Learn more about the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) and disability
Background:
Since 1992, the United Nations International Day of
Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) has been celebrated
annually on 3 December around the world. The
theme for this year’s International Day is “Achieving
17 Goals for the Future We Want”. This theme notes
the recent adoption of the 17 Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) and the role of these
goals in building a more inclusive and equitable
world for persons with disabilities. This year’s
objectives include assessing the current status of
the Convention on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities (CRPD) and SDGs and laying the
foundation for a future of greater inclusion for
persons with disabilities.
Observance of the 2016 IDPD coincides
with the 10-year anniversary of the
adoption of the CRPD – one of the
most quickly and widely ratified
international treaties put forth by the
United Nations to date.

MY CANCER CARE RECORD
Grampians Integrated Cancer Service (GICS) in partnership with North Eastern Melbourne Integrated
Cancer Service (NEMICS) have launched the My Cancer Care Record. The My Cancer Care Record is a hand
held folder specifically designed to empower patients to keep all their cancer details in one place, organise
information and provide tips and questions to ask their health care team.
A unique aspect of the folder is that it has been designed by consumers for consumers and will be trialed and
distributed within 20 service providers across the Grampians and North Eastern Melbourne regions.
The My Cancer Care Record empowers patients and their carers to make informed decisions about their treatment
options. It is something that allows clinicians and their care teams to develop information specifically for their
patients. Patients can take copies of their test results, medications can be recorded, visits can be documented,
questions for their next visit to an oncologist can be prepared in advance.
The plan is to distribute 2,000 folders to cancer patients over a 6 month period as part of the pilot which will be
evaluated by an independent consultant. For more information Joanne Gell, GICS Strategic Director Ph 5320 6728 or

ALLIED HEALTH ASSISTANT WORKFORCE
Victoria’s allied health assistant workforce helps to
ensure our health services function efficiently. Allied
health assistants work with allied health practitioners.
They are trained to work within a certain scope of
practice, and undertake tasks that are delegated to
them by allied health practitioners.
This allows allied health practitioners to focus their
efforts where they are needed most.
The resources on this site will assist health services
seeking to develop an allied health assistant workforce.
The Victorian Assistant Workforce Model provides a
structured process to implement workforce redesign to
build an allied health workforce.
This section of the site also contains other
resources, including an online training
module, that health services can use in the
process of developing their allied health
assistant workforce.
NEXT STEPS IN IMPLEMENTING THE VICTORIAN
PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELLBEING PLAN 2015-2019
The Victorian public health and wellbeing outcomes framework
(the Outcomes framework) and Implementing the Victorian
public health and wellbeing plan 2015-2019: taking action - the
first two years (the Action plan) have been released.
The Action plan lists major initiatives that support health and
wellbeing across the Victorian Government and major
government agencies between 2015-2017.
The Outcomes framework will help us track over time, the
effects of our cumulative efforts in improving the health and
wellbeing of all Victorians. Where data is available, the
Outcomes framework also enables assessment of health and
wellbeing inequalities.
The Outcomes framework and the Action plan are the next
steps in delivering on the objective of the Public Health and
Wellbeing Act 2008 and implementing the vision of the
Victorian public health and wellbeing plan 2015-2019.
Both documents are available from the Victorian public
health and wellbeing plan 2015-2019 section.
