Geology, Petrology and Geochemistry (B-20), University of Libge, B-4000 SART TILMAN, Liege 1, Belgium

This is the fourteenth survey in the series of Geochemi- cal Reference Sample (GRS) Bibliography published in Geostandards Newsletter and is designated as Part XIV in the series.

The part XIV contains references extracted from major analytical chemistry and geochemical Journals that have become available to the author from January to December 1993. A few earlier ones which were not available at the time of the previous report (Part XIII) or those which were inadvertently overlooked have also been included.

During the year under review, a total number of 232 references have been collected. Some 7524 new results have been reported; compilation data were ignored in this total.

More than 25 Journals have published articles related to the analysis of GRS or reported analytical results during 1993. Rare earth elements (REE), large ion lithophile elements (LILE: Rb, K, Ba, Sr, Th) and high field strength elements (HFSE: Zr, Hf, Ta) have again attracted many geoanalysts. The determination of gold and the platinum- group elements (PGE) has also been reported in several papers.

Table 1 lists the distribution of the GRS references in the literature. Judging by the number of new data, Geostandards Newsletter holds by far the first place.

Table 2 summarizes the analytical methods most used to report results on reference materials. Each technique has its

KEY CODES

The first line contains four different codes, separated by three slashes.

Method Percent

The first code (2 digits) gives the year of publication. Neutron Activation Analysis 24 Mass Spectrometry 18 Inductively Coupled Plasma Spectrometry 17 Atomic Absorption Spectrometry 16 X-Ray Fluorescence 11 Colorimetry 6

be attributed to the 8th International Conference Modern Trends in Activation Analysis (MTAA 8) held in Vienna during 16-20 September 1991. Volumes 167 to 169 of “Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry “ were devoted to the Proceedings of the papers presented at MTAA8. In fact, 22 of the 152 published articles dealt with GRS.

Once again, in preparing this annual survey, we have tried to maintain as complete and exhaustive a coverage as possible. However, some publications which have appeared in 1993 could not be assembled here for whatever reasons. These references will be, of course, included in future contributions.

PRESENTATION OF REFERENCES

The presentation of references follows the style adopted previously. The reference papers have been classified under three principal headings:

a. New analytical data b. New compilations of “recommended” values c. General aspects of GRS.

Within each category, the references are arranged in alphabetical order with the name of the (first) author as key word. Each reference quoted consists essentially of three parts: key codes, reference itself and comments.

The seconde code (3 digits) gives the serial number of the reference for the year code preceding it.

The third code (2 letters) indicates the type of sample (first letter) and of analysis (second letter). The first letter gives the type of GRS:

R: Rock M: Mineral 0: Ore S: Soil

The second letter, T or M, stands for Trace or Major element analysis. The code GG represents general informa- tion on GRS such as evaluation of compiled data statistical procedures.

The fourth code (2 letters) designates the method of analysis:

AA: CG: CK: C T FM:

Fx: IC: IR: IS: ME:

MN:

MP: S E SG: SM:

Atomic absorption spectrometry Gravimetry Colorimetry Volumetry Fluorimetry
