This is the eighth survey in the series of Geochemical Reference Sample (GRS) Bibliography Table 1. GRS references in various Journals during 1987 published in Geostandards Newsletter andis designated as PART VIII in the series. Journal No. of No. of

The PART VIII contains references gleaned from Journal of Radioanalytical and major analytical chemistry and geochemical Journals that + Letten) 58 2226 have become available to the author from January to Geostandards Contributions Newsletter to and 28 2575

those which have inadvertently been overlooked have also been included.

available at the time of the previous report (PART VII) or

During the period covered by this bibliography, a total number of 241 references has been collected. This shows an increase of 15% over the earlier review. A large part of this increase can be attributed to the Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry (nearly the quarter of total number of references).

More than 30 Journals have published GRS articles during 1987. The vast majority of the papers deals with trace element determination. Rare-earth elements (REE) always top the list (30% of the articles) followed by transition elements. Noble metal (gold, silver and the platinum-group elements) analysis starts to be reported to interpret geochemical characteristics.

Table 1 shows the distribution of the GRS references in the literature. Now the Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry occupies the first rank by the number of publications. However, judging by the number of new data, Geostandards Newsletter holds by far the first place. These two Journals are the most prominent data outlets and confirm their important role for the geoanalytical community.

Table 2 lists the degree of use of various analytical techniques. Several interesting trends are apparent from this Table. The four dominant techniques are neutron

activation analysis (NAA), isotope dilution mass spectrometry (IDMS), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP) and atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). 80% of the references cited in PART VIII involve these methods of choice. Among these NAA continues to be the most versatile and widely utilised technique. The Seventh Modern Trends in Activation Analysis Conference (Copenhagen, 1986, June 23-27) and its proceedings published in 1987 by the Journal of Radioanalytical and Nuclear Chemistry (volumes 1 12- 114) may explain the predominance of NAA in the study of GRS. In fact, 27 of the 153 published papers dealt with GRS. 143NdPNd isotope ratios continue to be widely used in isotope geochemistry. Another notable trend is the rapid rise in popularity of ICP for geostandards (third place!). This technique prevails by the skin of one's teeth on AAS. For the other methods, the situation is about the same as observed previously.

Once again we have tried to maintain a coverage as complete and exhaustive as possible. However, some publications which have appeared in 1987 could not be assembled here because of late amval of some Journals or other reasons. These references will be, of course, included in future contributions.
