Advocacy for Nursing on Capitol Hill As academic nursing leaders, AACN members have the opportunity to advocate on behalf of issues that impact our nation’s healthcare system. Participating in Capitol Hill visits is an essential component of the association’s work to educate Members of Congress and their staff as well as strengthen working relationships and serve as expert resources to legislators. The requests that AACN members bring to the Hill are echoed in a virtual advocacy message that is emailed to AACN’s Grassroots Network. Whether you have past experience or are new to this experience, AACN State Grassroots Liaisons and staff will help you to prepare for

successful and worthwhile Hill visits.

Preparing for Your Capitol Hill VisitsMonday, October 26 7:00-8:20 a.m.

During this breakfast session, AACN’s Congressional requests that members will discuss on their Capitol Hill visits are reviewed. Additionally, attendees have the opportunity to meet with other deans from their state to allow time to prepare for constructive dialogue during the Hill visits. AACN staff also reviews what to expect during Hill meetings and answers questions that members may have.

While the exact issues and talking points depend on Congressional action and are distributed shortly before the meeting, registrants are encouraged to become familiar with AACN’s Federal Policy Agenda as it highlights the priorities that drive the association’s policy and advocacy work.

Capitol Hill VisitsMonday, October 261:30-5:00 p.m.

AACN State Grassroots Liaisons assist in scheduling Senate offi ce visits and coordinating with member deans from their state. Individual AACN members may wish to schedule meetings with their Representative’s offi ce as well. Bus service between the JW Marriott and Capitol Hill is provided.

Capitol Hill ReceptionMonday, October 265:00-6:30 p.m.

This is a great opportunity for AACN members to network with Members of Congress and their staff. Bus service between the JW Marriott and Capitol Hill is provided.
