Background information on Saudi healthcare system
The Ministry of Health of Saudi Arabia (MOH) supervises the healthcare both in the public and the private sector/ manages the country‟s health care system (strategic planning, formulating health policies, health services programs).
Healthcare facilities in the kingdom are designed to benefit both the public and the private sector employees (preventive, curative, emergency, prenatal, rehabilitative healthcare)
There are approximately 60% MOH hospitals, 30% private and 10% other semi-government hospitals.
Primary health care centers and clinics present in remote areas provide emergency, preventive, and other basic services while big hospitals and specialized treatment facilities are present in all urban locations.
Patients may self- refer, get referred by PCPs to specialist (in and out of hospital).

Prescription Restrictions in Saudi Arabia
The government provides free healthcare to Saudi nationals
employed in the government sector, so there is no restrictions in prescription governmental and semi-governmental hospitals.
For private sectors, majority of patients (approx 85%) have insurance coverage (Local and expats in private sector) and reimbursement status is extremely crucial when deciding to prescribe a treatment.
Physicians however „think twice‟ before prescribing expensive
non-covered medicines.
The only patients willing to pay for expensive medicines are The elite class who do not have insurance.
