Roo Fair Sign up for the Get Involved Fair (replacing Roo Fair)

This year the SOM will not be holding its own separate Roo Fair during Orientation Weekend. Instead, med school organizations can advertise themselves by signing up for the larger UMKC Get Involved Fair which will be taking place on the same day the Roo Fair typically would (the Sunday of orientation weekend). August 19!! Unionfest is a fun packed event held in the Student Union to welcome all new and return UMKC Students back to campus! This event is an important opportunity for your organization to connect with the UMKC Student. If your organization is a Recognized Student Organization at UMKC you are expected to attend this event. Everyone will then be asked to go outside to participate in the Spirit Walk to the Women's Soccer game at Durwood Stadium against Saint Louis University. The Spirit Walk will start at 1:30 PM. All UMKC Student are encouraged to attend the Soccer game! Admission is free. You will then need to be ready at your Unionfest table and available to attendees at 4:00 PM. We estimate that 1800 new and current students will be at Unionfest this year, so please plan accordingly.

Curriculum Ambassadors

The Council on Curriculum is now accepting self-nominations and applications for the 2018-2019 Student Curriculum Ambassadors.

As we continue to change and improve the Council on Curriculum, it is helpful and necessary to have student input in regards to their education here at the School of Medicine. While we have elected student representation on our council, it is imperative that we have open communication with students from all years of the curriculum in order to plan for change, assist with curriculum development, and provide assistance with communicating policies with their peers.

The Student Curriculum Ambassadors will work together to create and plan projects of their choosing to pursue throughout the academic year with assistance from the curriculum office. These projects can include information workshops, town halls, etc. Only 2 students will be selected from each class.

To be eligible, students applying must be in good academic standing, provide professional input, and commit to attending 75% of the monthly meetings. Meetings occur every 3rd Monday of the month at 12:00pm in the School of Medicine. Students who fail to regularly attend monthly meetings will be asked to step down.

This is a great opportunity as a student to make your voice heard and make a direct impact on the curriculum.

To apply: Please write a one page, double-spaced personal statement about why you would like to serve the UMKC School of Medicine and your fellow students in this position. Students will be selected and notified of their application status by Curriculum leadership during the first week of September. Pathology Interest Group

Please join the Pathology Interest Group for our first meeting! It will be held on Monday,

August 20th at 11am. We will get a tour of the Pathology Department at TMC, seeing

various instrumentation and procedures in the daily work of a pathologist and also examine

a few slides with Pathology faculty. Please meet us in Dr. Hamidpour’s office through the

Pathology Administration door in the TMC Pathology department, which can be accessed

using your student ID through the UMKC second floor entrance (down the hall from the

Hey Everyone,

Hope your school year is going well so far!

The Radiology Interest Group (RIG) will be having our first meeting on August 21st at the UMKC School of Medicine Theater B (on the first floor) from 6-7 pm. There will be some light refreshments. We will be talking about what radiology is, what the day-to-day schedule of a radiology resident looks like, and also the application process for radiology residency (both diagnostic and interventional).

We want this to be a student-led group and will be holding elections at the end of the meeting for student representatives. If you are particularly interested in applying to radiology residency in the future, this a great opportunity to become involved. In the future we plan to hold meetings on the following topics: basics of chest radiographs, basics of pediatric imaging, emergency stroke neuro imaging and neurointerventional procedures, interventional radiology, a resident panel, radiology research opportunities at UMKC, and a possibly procedure workshop at the UMKC skills lab where we can experiment with the ultrasound machines and practice central lines. Not sure if you are even interested in radiology? No problem. Everyone could use some imaging knowledge to apply to their future field of choice and much of what we plan to discuss regarding residency and applications is applicable to other specialties. Format

Policy for In the Know Announcement Submissions

1) All flyer/image submissions must be in JPG format (if the announcement is a

flyer). PDF and Word documents must be converted to JPG before being emailed

to shahmohammadin@umkc.edu. A TEXT summary of the information in the

flyer must also be included along with the flyer. This is to ensure that our In

the Know emails are ADA compliant and readable by the visually impaired.

2) If the announcement is a text only announcement, please include it in the body

of your email. Please use black font only and include a title for your

announcement such as “Emergency Medicine Interest Group”. Make sure to

include a contact person and email.

3) If an announcement includes incorrect information (such as an incorrect date or

time), and that week’s In the Know has already been sent out, a revision for your

specific announcement will not be sent out to the school. The only time a

correction email will be sent out is if the error is on the part of Student Affairs

(mistyped or forgot to include an announcement). Submissions which do not meet

the requirements will be returned to sender requesting the appropriate edits. The

announcement may then be resubmitted to shahmohammadin@umkc.edu for

inclusion in the In the Know.

4) To be included in the following Monday’s “In the Know”, announcements must be

submitted by 5PM the prior Thursday.
