Neither Allah nor Master! / Secularism inch’Allah! (2011)

Directed by Nadia El Fani Not Rated, 71 minutes

Arabic with English subtitles

Director Nadia El Fani is scheduled to appear in person

Made at the height of the recent revolutions in North Africa, Ni Allah ni maître, retitled Laïcité, inch’Allah!, offers a cinematic exploration of secularism in the Muslim country of Tunisia before and after the deposition of President Ben Ali. While the Arab Spring sparked an unprecedented era of freedom and optimism, filmmaker Nadia El Fani also considers the impact of a resurgent Islamism which potentially threatens these political gains. El

Fani is casual and outspoken; she introduces viewers to Tunisians, including many women, in their own spaces – sprawled across a living room couch, gathered together on the front steps of a building, enjoying a cup of coffee in the garden – and discover just how much they have to lose. Neither Allah, Nor Master! documents Tunisians resisting religious ideology and fighting for a secular state in their everyday lives.
