“JULIE’S JIVE”When the weather man said that winter was half over last week, I just about cried in my coffee—where does the time go?! Since we need to submit articles to our Newsletter Editor by the 20th of each month, I have a lot to report on from the past weeks. The Woods put out great hors d’oeuvres for our Christmas Party on December 23rd. Plates of stuffed mushrooms, cheese and crackers, vegetables and dip were served, along with beer and wine. This was also our Pre-trip meeting for both the Marquette Day Trip and our four day trip to Lutsen.

The Marquette Day trip was a success with Mike Bast and Megan Pasterski leading the group. Skiing at Lutsen was wonderful until a cold front (a VERY cold front) moved in. Jeanine Bosdech and her daughter, Brooke Baumgarten, our trip leaders for Lutsen, had to give us the bad news that our skiing trip to Spirit Mountain, scheduled for Sunday, on our way home, was cancelled due to frigid temperatures. On a cold, windy New Year’s Day forty-two hardy souls (15 of which were new members!) embarked on a long weekend ski trip to Lutsen and Spirit Mountains. In keeping with the trip theme a Trivia contest was held on the eight hour ride to Gran Marais. The bus was divided in half and questions were based on Lutsen Mt, Spirit Mt, and Lake Superior. The winners received their choice of various flavored jello shots.

Friday morning was very cold (temp?) and somewhat windy. With no new recent snow, conditions were icy in places, but overall not bad. Unfortunately, Jane Lehman injured her meniscus about mid-day leaving her on crutches for the remainder of the trip. (I have been told that she will not need surgery and will back on the slopes in 6-8weeks.)

That evening the bus driver was kind enough to drive us into town and we basically split into 3 groups for dinner with many going to the Gunflint Tavern, Sven and Ole’s and the American Legion for all you can eat chicken.

Saturday was a little warmer, less wind and we were graced with some fresh powder! It snowed most of the day and everyone was smiling. Aspen Lodge graciously allowed us to use their lobby for a Happy Hour where everyone was invited to bring any extra snacks or beverages they had, and the club provided beverages as well. We toasted Al & Lynn Koivisto’s 28th wedding anniversary and DD Knutson’s 70th birthday. Good thing there were

Lutsen – The Superior Experience!

not too many people outside of our group staying at the lodge as the Happy Hour was quite loud (an indication of a good time, no doubt).

Saturday evening there were 35+ mph winds, snow and very cold temps – but this was a group of hardy souls and while some people opted to watch an NFL football game in the lobby, several others bundled up and walked a few blocks downtown to the Gunflint Tavern for the ambiance, beverages, and live music. A good time was had by all, with a very challenging walk back to the lodge as wind and cold had not abated while we were at Gunflint.

The wind and cold continued on Sunday (Grand Marais had -50 temp with wind chill) and Spirit Mt. made the decision not to open for the day because of the dangerous conditions. So, we headed south a little earlier than planned. We at least had a bright sunny day for the ride and Gary Austin suggested we take a little scenic route along Lake Superior. The sea smoke was very beautiful and everyone enjoyed the view.

The Obtuse Award was won by Adam Hansen for trying to open a door to the hotel with his room card which was not a door accessible with the card. So he started knocking on the door, only to find out, when someone came to open the door, that it was unlocked all along! Thank you to all who helped Brooke and me with our first experience as trip leaders! We had a great group of people and it was fun getting to know our new members.

The weather on that Saturday morning was not normal for late December. This was the first time I’ve had to drive through thick fog to get to the loading point of a ski trip. Usually it’s just the road conditions, the blowing snow and/or other drivers. One Door County club member arranged for in town lodging fearing the same issues. The drive up through the snow-free landscape was somewhat depressing until we ventured north enough to see a vista covered in white. The snow covered landscape and the theme of moustaches and Christmas hats or caps got the entire bus in a skiing mood. My assistant Meg brought on board a selection of stick on mustaches for everyone to use. Our favorite Meteorologist quickly assembled a new look that of a Mediterranean convenience store owner, complete with bushy eyebrows and thick beard. Hold on, he was trying to look like that character from Seinfeld; “No SOUP for you!”

We had 10 people sign-up for NASTAR; with six getting medals, but no gold (sorry G-force). The line of skiers at the starting house was so long that some of us waiting until after lunch to run the course. That was a mistake! The course was so carved up I felt like racing in a trough and my time showed it.

We had some interesting nominations for the Obtuse Award (it goes to the trip attendee that is witnessed doing something stupid). Nominations #1 & #2: at lunch, the Boarder Shack was augmenting the heating system with small propane heaters that were on the floor. Both Senny and Kathy Heraly (a.k.a. Hot Pants Heraly) melted their ski pants by standing too close to one of the heaters. Nomination #3:

new member Eric Boulanger; who after the dinner stop exclaimed after a self pat down, that he had left his cell phone behind. Our driver quickly turned down a side-road and was in the process of heading back to the fast food place when Eric called out again saying “that he had just found his phone on the floor!” So for sending the bus on

a wild goose chase he got the nomination and after a voice vote, he was declared the winner.

The winner of the Christmas hats or caps went to Gary Wisneski. This cap had to come from the Industrial Light and Magic workshop. Not only did the cap blink, it was also animated.

Thanks to my “megnificent” assistant Meg for getting the mustaches, several kind of Bloody Mary mix, helping with the shopping and most of all; for convincing several of her friends to dragging themselves out of bed early on a Saturday morning to join us on this trip.

See you on the slopes, Mike
