Geet Sethi inaugurates the 17th BFAME Championships
Vinay Desai – Sapan Desai Wins the Friendship Pairs Event
The 17th BFAME Championships organised by the Gujarat Bridge Federation commenced yesterday
at Hotel Hyatt, Ahmedabad, India. The Championships will continue till Tuesday, 11th June, 2013.
The championships were inaugurated by the Chief Guest Mr. Geet Sethi, a multiple times World Billiard
Champion and World Snooker Master. Accompanying him on the dais were Secretary, BFAME Mr.
Azwer ul-Haque of Pakistan; Mr. N.R. Kirubakara Moorthy, the President of Bridge Federation of India
and Vice Presidents of BFAME; Mr. Lalith Ganlath, President, Bridge Federation of Sri Lanka; Mr. Sunit
Chokshi the organising Secretary of the event and Mr. Ton Kooijman, the Chief Tournament Director
from World Bridge Federation. The inaugural function started with the traditional lamp lighting
ceremony by all the dignitaries on the dais.
Mr. Ton Kooijman, then took the oath of sportsman spirit on behalf of the tournament directors and
technical team, whereas Mrs. Rita Choksi took it on behalf of all the participating players.
The tournament commenced with a Friendship Pairs (match points) event played in 2 sessions of 24
boards. 68 pairs, including many local pairs participated in the event. The Sri Lankan pair of Ashanta
DE MEL - H H J KEERTHISENA with a massive score of 70.3% were the leaders at the end of the 1st
session. Cricket fans should be really happy to know that Ashanta De Mel is the same man, who
spearheaded the Sri Lankan fast bowling attack in the 70-80s.
However, at the end of the event, it was the local duo of Vinay Desai & Sapan Desai who finally won
the 2-session Friendship Pairs event. They scored 67.9% in 1st session and 57.3 in the 2nd session to score
a well deserving win. The 2nd position with a score of 61.7% was taken by Keyzad Anklesaria, another
Ahmedabad player playing with J.M. Shah. Mrs. Kiran Nadar – B. Satyanarayana were 3rd with 61.2%
score.
For detailed score, See page 3.
Play in all the 3 events i.e. OPEN, WOMEN & SENIORS will start today. The matches are being shown
live on BBO.
Seven teams are participating in the Open event and will play an all-play-all double round-robin and
the TOP 4 teams will qualify for the semi-finals. The 2 teams reaching the finals will qualify from Zone-4
for the Bermuda Bowl 2013 to be held at Bali, Indonesia from 16th to 29th September 2013.
Four teams each are participating In the Women and Seniors event and will play an all-play-all
quadruple round-robin. The TOP 2 teams will directly qualify for the finals and simultaneously qualify for
the Venice Cup & Seniors Bowl 2013 from Zone-4.
The OPEN Teams will be playing 3 rounds per day, whereas the WOMEN & SENIORS are playing only 2
rounds a day. Each round is of 16-board matches.

6H is a very reasonable contract but careless play can cause problems. If West leads diamond won by
King in the dummy, declarer has to be careful in playing a low heart to the queen. If he by mistake
plays the King of trumps, West will win with the Ace and another diamond defeats the contract.

Rajeshwar Tiwari – B. Prabhakar bid the slam and
faced little problem in making the contract after getting the diamond lead. But the play is interesting
on say singleton lead of spade 5. Declarer wins in
hand, plays a low heart to Ace and another heart to
Jack, queen & King. North continues with his last
heart and now declarer plays all his spades discarding 2 diamonds from hand. In the last 5-card
position, North can only keep either 2 clubs and 3 diamonds or 2 diamonds and three clubs.
If he keeps 2 clubs, the play of club Ace, diamond
to Ace and a club ruff makes the CQ as the 12th
trick, whereas if North keeps 3 clubs and two
diamonds, then a diamond to Ace, club Ace and a
diamond ruff in hnad makes the DJ good for 12th trick. Nice interesting hand.

Systems & Conventions – From Desk of the CTD
This Championship is a category-1 event, which means that Brown Sticker Conventions are
allowed. If a pair uses a “Brown Sticker Convention”, they are supposed to bring a
defence to the table, which could be used by their opponents. The same is valid for a
multi 2-Diamond opening.
