Political Environment
Government Type: Constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary government.
Japan is a constitutional monarchy where the power of the emperor is very limited. As a ceremonial
figurehead, he is defined by the constitution as "the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people".
Power is held chiefly by the Prime Minister of Japan and other elected members of the Diet, while
sovereignty is vested in the Japanese people.
The Emperor effectively acts as the head of state on diplomatic occasion.
Economic Environment
GDP (2009 est.): $5.049 trillion (official exchange rate); $4.141 trillion (PPP).
Real growth rate (2009 est.): -5.7%.
Per capita GDP (2009 est. PPP): $33,523.37
Japan's industrialized, free-market economy is the second-largest in the world.
Its economy is highly efficient and competitive in areas linked to international trade, but productivity is far
lower in protected areas such as agriculture, distribution, and services.
Japan's reservoir of industrial leadership and technicians, well-educated and industrious work force, high
savings and investment rates, and intensive promotion of industrial development and foreign trade produced
a mature industrial economy.
Japan's major export industries include automobiles, consumer electronics (see Japanese consumer
electronics industry), computers, semiconductors, and iron and steel.
Most important trade partners are China and the USA, followed by South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore,
Thailand and Germany.

COPPERCopper is one of the basic chemical elements. It is commonly used to produce a wide variety of products,
including electrical wire, cooking pots and pans, pipes and tubes, automobile radiators, and many others.
Copper is also used as a pigment and preservative for paper, paint, textiles, and wood. It is combined with
zinc to produce brass and with tin to produce bronze.
US and China, Japans major trading partners are also the largest consumers of copper in the world

Conclusion
Japan is the centre of new trends and creativity and is a coveted testing ground for new products.
A survey of foreign-affiliated firms in Japan conducted by JETRO in early 2008 indicated that one in five of
these companies sees Japan as a centre for research and development and as a base for business activities in
Asia. Today, increasing numbers of companies around the world are partnering with Japanese companies to
develop products and services, create innovative technologies, and conduct R&D projects.
Advantages of doing business in Japan are:-
Japan is an enormous market, one of the world's largest in terms of economic scale. The scale of the
economies of the country's individual regions rivals that of some countries. Japan's regions also offer an
attractive market and extensive business opportunities
Japan's industries are globally competitive, and, as can be seen in the automotive sector, the nation's
industrial structure is extremely broad-based, with a large number of smaller companies functioning to
support the world heavyweights
Japan hosts a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) which, while perhaps small in
scale, are tremendously innovative. For foreign companies seeking to enter the Japanese market,
partnerships with companies of this type have numerous merits, including offering them the ability to
develop products that fit the market, to boost their technological capacity, and to open up markets and sales
channels.
Japans major exports are automobiles and electronics. Copper is an important element in the production of
both of these. Also US, which is one of Japans major trading partners is the largest consumer of copper in
the world.

China, another major trading partner of Japan, has a growing demand for copper. According to data issued
by the Beijing General Research Institute of Mining & Metallurgy China's copper consumption is projected
to increase to 7 million tons in 2010 and 7.4 million tons in 2011.
Production of copper in Japan will be profitable because there is a domestic demand (for the production of
automobiles, electronics, etc) and it can also be exported to US and China to meet their growing demand.
Thus, I would recommend the investor to commit his capital to the production of copper in
Japan.
