The Globe Guilders were honored to welcome the new Director of Devel-opment, Llwellyn Crain, to her first June Membership Luncheon and live-ly Second Hand Rose exchange. It was our pleasure and the highlight of the luncheon to have Freedome Bradley-Ballentine, Director of Arts Engagement, to share the incredible work that he and his actors are
providing through the Globe’s com-munity outreach program. Bonnie Duell chaired this event and we thank her and her committee.
Our members again were busy planning the Meet and Greet events to welcome the actors of tokyo fish story, Macbeth, Sense and Sensibility, Meteor Shower and Love’s Labor’s Lost. Can you imagine all those dev-iled eggs? Thank you to Mary Rob-erts and Marisa SorBello and all the dedicated Guilders for their hospi-tality.
It was a delight and certainly an honor to be able to see Shake-speare’s Folio right here in our city and the magnificent display pre-sented by The Globe. This was due to the extraordinary efforts of Barry Edelstein, Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director of The Globe, for securing this book. San Diego was the only city in California to host Shake-
speare's First Folio which is touring the 50 United States. The Guilders hosted a private party at the San Die-go Central Library, chaired by Judi Menzel, to view the display where 102 attended. It was interesting to note that many of the guests had never attended an event at the Li-brary. We owe Judi a big thank you for all her effort in planning this event.
Finally, it was my extreme honor to attend the ribbon cutting of the re-modeled Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, where we will be celebrat-ing Couture 2016 on August 22nd. The new foyer outside the main ball-room is something to behold and was designed to accommodate a convention all under one roof. You will not want to miss this event! I hope to see you there.
Warm regards,
Angie DeCaro

FIRST FOLIO NIGHT AT THE LIBRARY - JUNE 29
On June 29th, 102 Guilders and invited guests attended the private recep-tion and viewing of the First Folio – The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare. We mingled, enjoying wine, coffee and desserts while admiring the spectacu-lar city views from the 9th floor of the San Diego Public Library. Barry Edel-stein, Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director of The Old Globe, brought the room alive with his informative presentation. We were so fortunate that the Globe and the SDPL were selected as the only stop in California for the First Folio, on tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library, a national traveling ex-hibition to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. Accompanying the rare book was a multi-panel exhibition exploring the significance of Shakespeare then and now, as well as the importance of the First Folio. A supplemental exhibition showcased original props, costumes and photographs from The Old Globe’s 80-year archive, with a focus on the productions of Shakespeare that have made the Globe one of the most im-portant Shakespeare theatres in North America. Darlene Davies contribut-ed many items from her personal collection. I would like to thank my committee for making this exclusive event a night to remember: Sharon Steeber, co-chair, Barbara Bolt, Jane Cowgill, Cathie Ellis, and Trish McKay. Thanks also to Robin Hatfield, our Globe liaison, Lisa Barry-Shaw for the nametags and Norm Gillespie for taking the photo-graphs for Globe Guilders’ Facebook as well as the Guilder Gazette. NEWS FROM AROUND THE GLOBE
Dear Globe Guilders,
It has been a summer of reverie at The Old Globe. In Constellations,
stars, lights, and a minimalist geometric set allowed us to travel
through parallel universes and see into the future. Simulated sushi-
making, the sound effects of a bustling kitchen and original music de-
scribed as flowing “through the piece like gentle waves lapping at the
shore” made us crave aquatic cuisine in tokyo fish story. An ominous,
oversized red plastic shower curtain evoked a sea of blood in Shake-
speare’s chilling play Macbeth. And a stately spiral feature in the fresh new musical adaptation of Jane
Austen’s timeless classic Sense and Sensibility emblematized a ribbon floating in the wind.
Soon, a lush green set with an elaborate staircase will transport audiences to the pastoral world of Love’s
Labor’s Lost, when Tony-Award winner Kathleen Marshall makes her Old Globe debut directing the
Bard’s enchanting romantic comedy. Meanwhile, Meteor Shower, the hilarious and wonderfully bizarre
new play by returning Globe artist Steve Martin, will find an Ojai backyard engulfed in a meteor shower
as the stars come out, cocktails flow, and sparks fly in the night sky and in life.
Imagination isn’t the only thing blooming here – we also have some exciting events coming up! On Au-
gust 4, Steve Martin, whose beloved musical Bright Star premiered at the Globe in 2014 prior to a success-
ful Broadway run and five Tony Award nominations, will be In Conversation with Barry. And in October,
our fall Theatre Tour to London, Bath and Stratford will provide a unique way to both support the Globe’s
programs and have a fantastic time with fellow Globe theatregoers while exploring majestic history, mag-
nificent sights, fascinating people, unsurpassed pageantry and superb theatre.
As we head into August, we send our very best from the Globe staff, artists, and happy theatre-goers who
benefit from your commitment to the theatre. Thank you for all that
you do, and we look forward to seeing you next at Celebrating
Couture 2016!
Sincerely Yours, Barry Edelstein Michael G. Murphy Artistic Director Managing Director

SUMMER LUNCHEON AND SECOND HAND ROSE - JUNE 10
The Summer Luncheon was a delightful day. (1) Co-Chair Liz Helming with Chair Bonnie Duell; (2) Jane Klofkorn and Bonnie Wright; (3) Freedome Bradley-Ballentine, director of Arts Engagement with President Angie DeCaro; (4) Kim Neapole with Llewellyn Crain, Director of Development ; (5) Major Gifts Officer and Theatre Liaison to the Globe Guilders Robin Hatfield with Dolores Smith and Jean Laing; (6) Four “Carols” - Carol Green, Carol Rumsey, Carol Winter and Carol Hanson.
Our Summer Membership Luncheon on June 16 was fun, festive and informative. We had our annual Second Hand Rose event and we all walked away with new treasures! The 50/50 raffle was a hit and Mary Roberts, graciously, donated her winnings back to the theatre. Our lunch was delicious with many compliments on each of the entrees and who doesn’t like chocolate and vanilla mousse? The luncheon’s highlights were the two speakers from the Old Globe Theatre. Llewel-lyn Crain, the new Director of Development, told us what enticed her to join the thea-tre were the 15 productions featuring the diverse programming of classical and con-temporary works. Freedome Bradley-Ballentine, the Director of Arts Engagement, explained the outreach efforts such as “Globe for All,” “Globe to Go” and AXIS which features free cultural events and programs on the Old Globe’s plaza. The beautiful rose centerpieces, donated by Pam Stafford, were given to a guest at each table whose birthday was the closest to Freedome’s! Angie DeCaro, Globe Guil-ders President encouraged everyone to see the First Folio at the Central San Diego Library, a once in a lifetime event. The summer membership luncheon was a lovely afternoon!

COMPANY CALL - THE SCOTTISH PLAY - MACBETH - MAY 17
A company call is just that—the whole company; all the electricians, carpenters, lighting, set deco-ration, costume department, etc. It’s a wonderful thing to see the whole family of people it takes to produce shows at The Old Globe. With baseball on his mind, Jack O'Brien di-rected an ambitious production of Yankee Wives in the Old Globe Theatre in 1982, the first year of all professional shows. Prior to 1982, winter season plays were performed by non-paid casts. From the start of his tenure as Artis-tic Director in 1981, O'Brien made clear his en-thusiasm for baseball. As usual, he assembled a strong cast. Yankee Wives featured a young up-and-coming actress named Annette O'Toole, and, since then, she has had a very busy ca-reer.
Skip a decade to 1992 and a fascinating west coast premiere of Ed Schmidt's Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting. Cassius Carter Centre Stage was the venue. The fictional account of a meeting with four prominent African-Americans, called by Branch Rickey, owner of the Brooklyn Dodgers, dealt with finding ways to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball. The four prominent African-Americans? Jackie Rob-inson, Joe Louis, Paul Robeson and Bill Robinson. The play imagined five powerful men in a room discussing a highly charged topic at the time. Eleven years later, in 2003, audiences rooted for characters in Rounding Third, a play by Richard Dresser, which brought to life the drama of coaches, fans and families who either want kids to win at all costs, or who want youngsters merely to have fun playing baseball. It focused on a raging argument regarding the true objectives of Little League. Rounding Third, was also staged in the Carter. Finally, in 2005, the Globe produced a play which dealt with homo-phobia. With this play, Take Me Out, the Globe focused on discrimi-nation toward the gay community, specifically within the baseball world. Just as Mr. Rickey Calls a Meeting in 1992 had tackled the long history of discrimination toward black baseball players, Take Me Out confronted homophobia in athletics. The plot followed a turn in the life of an iconic baseball player living the life of a hero. Hero, that is, until he calls a press conference to "come out." The conflict that re-sults forms the basis for the play. The Globe's production was the first regional production of Take Me Out since it left Broadway a few months before. The Old Globe and baseball have been intertwined. No doubt, the connection will continue.
