Bulwick & Blatherwycke and Laxton
AUGUST 2019

From the Parish Priest
Our Benefice Services
Last month I wrote about the structure and times of the monthly services
in Bulwick and Laxton and the monthly Benefice Service in King’s Cliffe.
This month I want to highlight other church services in our Benefice.
On the second Sunday of each month there is Holy Communion at King’s
Cliffe and Easton-on-the-Hill at 10.30am. There is also an informal service
of hymns, readings and prayers at Collyweston at 4.00pm.
The service at King’s Cliffe on a third Sunday is known as our “Third Sunday
Service”. It is at 10.30am and, with Worship Songs, PowerPoint
presentations and a different theme each month, offers a contemporary
worship opportunity. Also on that Sunday there is Holy Communion at
Collyweston at 9.00am, Easton-on-the-Hill at 10.30am and Bulwick at
11.00am.
On a fourth Sunday there is Holy Communion at Easton-on-the-Hill at
9.00am using the Book of Common Prayer and there are Communion
services at both King’s Cliffe and Collyweston at 10.30am. At Laxton there
is a service of Evening Prayer.
When there is a fifth Sunday there are services of Holy Communion at
Collyweston at 9.00am and King’s Cliffe at 10.30am.
We also have special services in each of our villages throughout the year
especially for Harvest, Remembrance, Christmas and Easter. Look out for
details of these in the Gazette, or on our website and Facebook page.

King’s Cliffe Church Gift Day It was lovely to spend the afternoon of June 29th in the cool church while
temperatures soared to 30 degrees outside. Sue Trow-Smith gave two fascinating
talks about the history of the church, we listened to organ music and the choir
who performed a selection of church anthems and Pam Driscoll demonstrated
beautiful floral art. There was also an ample supply of delicious cakes, tea and
coffee to enjoy. Thanks to the Social Committee for organising the event and
providing refreshments which raised £117 towards church funds. Mandy Barber
Church Coffee Morning It was lovely to have a fine day for July’s Coffee Morning and to be able to enjoy
the beautiful summer flowers in the garden. Our grateful thanks to Maureen and
Michael Marshall for their welcome and warm hospitality. Thank you also to
those who generously donated delicious refreshments and raffle prizes. A total of
£145.50 was raised for church funds.
Please note, the next Coffee Morning will be held at 10.30am on Wednesday,
11th September at 37 Oak Lane, King’s Cliffe Do come along and enjoy good
company and refreshments. Christine Ball
King’s Cliffe Ecumenical Women’s Fellowship Group In July our annual outing was to Crowland Abbey where we were warmly
welcomed by the volunteer team who provided us with refreshments. As it was a
lovely sunny day we were able to tour the outside of the abbey with the guides,
before moving inside and hearing how the abbey had developed over the years.
It really is a very interesting building and well worth a visit. We then strolled to
The Old Paper Shop Café where a delicious cream tea awaited us. Thanks to both
Revd. Philip and Sheila Jackson for transporting us there.
Please note our next meeting will be held on Thursday 5th September at 2.00pm
in the CHAOS room, King’s Cliffe Church when members will be invited to ‘Show
and Tell’ to the group. Christine Ball
KC Ladies Group Thanks to Jenny Dixon we had a very enjoyable meeting on 1st July when she
talked to us about the Brudenell Family at Deene Park. A guided tour of the
house could well be on our agenda in the future.
There will not be a meeting in August but, on Monday 2nd September, Katy
Weeks will join us to give a talk on her role at Underground. I hope you all have a
pleasant summer break and look forward to seeing you in September.

King’s Cliffe Parish Council
The Parish Council recently held a meeting with East Northants Council and the
County Council to discuss a number of issues and aspirations for our Village. Some
of the issues discussed were as follows:
Industrial Units: We continued our discussions with the District Council in
relation to building some more Industrial Units on the site that they own at Kings
Mead. If anyone is interested in a unit on this site we would ask them to contact
the Clerk as well as East Northants District Council so that we are aware of any
local need that supports our belief that there is a need for these in the village.
Apartments / Flats for Young People: The Parish also spoke to the District
Council about the development of the land that they own off Daleswood Rise
where we would like to see the building of some one / two bed units for young
people. We are assured that the District will be supporting us in this aspiration.
Endowed School, Park Street: We discussed with both Councils our concerns
relating to the Endowed School site which has now been empty for more than
two years. We understand that there is a party interested in buying the site, but
there is an impasse between the County Council and the King’s Cliffe Almshouse
Charity which is the primary owner of the site. The issue relates to the new
school which is due to be transferred to the Charity. We have written to both the
County Council and the Charity urging both parties to resolve their differences in
the interests of the village so that that former school site does not become a
derelict eyesore.
Allotments: We have some space available within our Allotments. If you are
interested in an Allotment, either a full one or, indeed, a part of one, then please
do not hesitate to contact the Parish Clerk.
Speed Control Measures: We have agreed a double gateway at Apethorpe Road
and a single gateway at Blatherwycke Road and we are just finalizing the position
of these gates. We are still awaiting the relocation of the old school signs.
Cemetery: The cemetery gates have now been refurbished. We politely request
that these gates be closed, particularly when exiting the cemetery. The Parish
Council have agreed for an additional tap to be installed in the cemetery
extension, replacing the existing tap and pipe work with a ‘push-down’ tap.

Our weekly season of Teas continues every Sunday through August and until
Sunday 15th September. We are open from 2.00pm with ‘last orders’ at 4.30pm.
For the summer, cream and jam with homemade scones join our selection of
homemade cakes and cheese scones and toasted tea-bread is still on the menu!
Enjoy a relaxing pot of tea or coffee; fruit squashes are also available. There’ll be
new-season homemade jams on sale and our Book Corner is a great place to
browse for a good read. On Sunday 11th August we will be serving tea and cake
downstairs in Underground at our usual times while the King’s Cliffe Produce
Show is in full swing upstairs in the hall. Come for refreshments when you visit
the Produce Show. Sue Trow-Smith
King’s Cliffe Heritage Centre
Over the August Bank Holiday weekend the Heritage Centre will be open to visit
on both Sunday 25th and Monday 26th from 2.00 till 5.00pm. Come and see our
growing collection of village artefacts and explore the village’s interesting past
through our displays and digital archive. Children are welcome and we have
paper-based activities to help them get the most out of their visit. The Heritage
Centre is at 27, Bridge Street; a hanging sign over the street will tell you we’re
open. Entry is free but please be aware we have no toilet facilities on site.

King’s Cliffe Old Blokes Club
The next lunch time meeting will be held on Monday 5th August when the
speaker will be James Hopgood who will be relating his experiences in the Middle
East. At the June meeting Dave Scaysbrook fascinated us with the story of the
crash of an aircraft engaged in secret war work. A visit to the crash site and
associated places is planned for 19th August. The Get Fitter Gentlemen meet
every Wednesday at 10.00am, the ladies meet normally at 11.30am. There is also
a mixed group meeting at 10.00am on Fridays. Meetings take place at King’s Cliffe
Active. There are no membership fees but lunches cost £5 and Get Fitter groups
charge £2 per session. There is no formal membership so just turn up provided
you think you are an Old Bloke. Chris Jackson (033300 013776)

King’s Cliffe Flower and Produce Show
The Show is open to everyone in the village so please, search your garden and
allotment for flowers, fruits, vegetables or herbs that you can enter in the show!
Cooks, artists, photographers and other creative geniuses please check out the
different classes for your entries! The Show is open on Sunday 11th August from
2.30 to 4.30pm in the Village Hall with teas served all afternoon on Maltings
Green. Prize giving will take place here at 4.30pm and children in particular are
well rewarded for their efforts! Entry forms, with details of all the different adult
and children’s classes, are available at local outlets. Please note that entry forms
must be in by Thursday 8 August and set up of entries for the Show is 9.00 to
11.00am on the morning of the Show.
Jobs for August: Regularly deadhead flowering plants just above the top leaf on
the stem and water, especially containers and new plants, preferably using
recycled grey water or collected rainwater. If hot and dry, don’t cut grass too
short and the same applies if you’ve been away. Prune wisteria. Collect seeds to
propagate new plants. Cuttings of fuchsias and tender perennials can still be
taken and will root quickly at this time of year. These young plants will be sturdy
and survive the winter on a windowsill. Continue cutting out old fruited canes on
raspberries. Lift and pot up rooted strawberry runners. Plan what you will enter
in the Produce Show August 11, and nurture carefully!

Congratulations to King’s Cliffe Endowed School
SATs results for pupils in their last year at the school (KS2) have been announced.
95% of pupils have met the required standards (or above) in all subjects which is
significantly above the national average of between 73% and 79%. Based on
previous years, these results could yet again put the school in the top 1% of
schools across the country. Well done to all staff and pupils. Board of Governors

July 7th saw the 31st annual Duck Race take place. The sun shone for us and
Maltings Green was buzzing with lots of people, entertainment, beer and burgers!
We raised an incredible £4243.63! A very big thank you to our event sponsors,
Close Motors, PC Howard and Moore Stephens – we very much appreciate your
support.
Thank you to everyone who bought a duck, helped us with stalls, donated raffle
prizes and helped us in any way with the race including before and after! Thank
you to the Club for donating a barrel and to the Bakery for their kind donation of
burger rolls – we are very grateful. Thank you to all the community groups who
joined us on the day – Hedgehogs, Wildplaces, Heritage, Sewing Bee, Rainbows,
Guides and Hall Teas – it was lovely to have you with us! Thank you to the
Underground Committee who worked so hard to organise the event and finally, a
big thank you to everyone for coming along! Here’s to Duck Race 2020!

Transition King’s Cliffe for environment and community
It’s Haymaking time: The meadow area on the Village Field
has been outstanding this year with over 20 different
wildflowers, including oxeye daisies, knapweed and a host of
different vetches. The bees and butterflies and other insects
have really appreciated our efforts in providing a vital oasis of
nectar and pollen for them. To keep it in this condition it
needs to be cut each year and cleared. This helps control the grasses and
encourages the pollinator plants to come again next year.
We will be scything and raking the meadow during
August, and welcoming anyone who wants to have
a go on the weekend of 10th/11th August. We’ll
be there each day from 10.30am until we get tired,
usually around 3.00pm. It’s a wonderful way to
engage with the environment, and not as hard
work as you might imagine (Poldark was definitely
doing it wrong!). Do come along and help out.
There are spare scythes and free tuition, and there will be plenty of raking up to
do as well, so all ages and abilities will be welcome.
Wildplaces: The annual wildlife walk in July was well attended as usual, and we
found all kinds of butterflies, bees and other insects living in our greenspaces.
The Marbled Whites have done particularly well this year and have even been
seen south of the Willowbrook in good numbers. We also had a first record of an
interesting flower –the Broad-leaved Helleborine.
Community Orchard: Our work parties continue throughout the summer, so why
not come along and help nurture our young trees. If you can help, please contact
Minibus: Don’t forget the TKC Community Minibus has availability for group
outings, parties etc at non-profit rates!. Contact [email protected].
Open Meeting: Our next regular meeting is on 13th August at 7.45pm, in the
Club. Do come along and see what we’re up to.
Contact: If you want more information about any of our activities or want to get
involved, please get in touch: [email protected]

The Way We Were
11
The Way We Were Recent commemorations on the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings led me to
think about some of the personal recollections we have in our village archives
about life in Cliffe during World War Two. Among them is a list put together by
Mrs Rosemary Woolf giving the names of the tradesmen, businesses and other
features in the village on D-Day as she recalled them. These are the specific
wartime features on her list:
• Land workers’ Hostel in barracks at the Blatherwycke Road/Wood Road corner.
• Women’s Land Army Hostel at King’s Cliffe House, West Street.
• Women’s Voluntary Service Forces’ canteen at what is now 57, West Street.
• Home Guard Headquarters in the Village Hall. Mr Ingrey in command. He was
also a supplier of radio accumulators – not everyone had electric supplies then.
• Italian Prisoner-of-War Camp on the Blatherwycke Road (just before Mill House)
Italian POWs were allowed to work on farms and King’s Cliffe KIP products as
their country was now our ally!
• Wartime Airfield – initially used by the RAF and other Allied airmen; then from
early 1943 it became USAAF Station 367, the base for the 20th Fighter Group
Squadrons 55th, 77th and 79th, flying P38 Lightnings.
• The railway station had regular services to and from Rugby to Peterborough East
via King’s Cliffe. The goods yard was busy with coke, coal, animal feedstuffs,
supplies for King’s Cliffe Insulating Products who made kiln-lining bricks at their
Rockbourne Works on the corner of Park Street, Station Road and Wood Road,
sugar-beet to and from Peterborough sugar beet factory, supplies to King’s Cliffe
war-time airfield and also RAF Collyweston airfield (later known as RAF Wittering).
A handwritten notice headed ‘Air Raid Protection Organisation’ was given to us by
Terence Smith, whose father was in the ARP. From this, we know that the ARP
Warden’s Post was at Mr Elliott’s house on the corner of Bridge Street and Park
Street: Mr Elliott was Head Warden. The First Aid Post was at Dr Harman Brown’s
house, 19 West Street; Mrs Harman Brown was in charge. A separate group of
Stretcher Bearers was led by Reg Beedham and stretchers for their use were kept
at the First Aid Post. There were three Fire Fighting squads, and stirrup pumps
were kept at the ARP Post, the First Aid Post and at Mr Davis’ on School Hill (this
was at Library House, 25 Bridge Street).
There was, of course, no street lighting during the war years and the general
requirement to black out all windows must have made the village streets much
darker at night. The photo I referred to in June showing cyclists outside the Youth
Hostel at ‘Rockbourne’ at Christmas 1939, also shows white painted markings on
the kerb stones. I imagine these were to help people find their way safely on dark
nights. Sue Trow-Smith for King’s Cliffe Heritage

St Nicholas Church, Bulwick Dress a Girl Workshop: The group attended the Teas and Crafts on Sunday 23rd
June in St Nicholas church and raised £82.50 for The Children’s Society & Eve
Northamptonshire Family Refuge. There will be two other Craft sales, the first of
which will be on the two afternoons of the Horticultural show. The quality and
originality of items for sale is excellent and the prices are very affordable. The
ladies who produce the items are dedicated to help those in need, so come along
and take a look at what has been produced. We are back at 2.00pm on Monday
15th September at our usual venue, Bulwick Village Centre.
Annual Horticultural Show: The Horticultural Show Committee work very hard to
ensure that the event is an enjoyable and good community event so please do
your best to support their efforts be abiding with the entries deadline and rules;
regrettably no late entries will be accepted. If you have misplaced your schedule I
have left a few spares on the table at the back of the church, or contact me direct.
Please see the schedule for all the programme of events. The will be two
registration sessions both held on Monday19th August in St Nicholas Church:
10:30am–12 noon and 6.00pm–8.00pm. Photographic exhibits must accompany
your entry form as the team need to classify and code the exhibits ready for
judging. If you are away for the entries registration date but would still like to
exhibit you can leave your completed entry form plus any photographic exhibits
with me or any other committee member. There will be teas and stalls in the
Village Centre on both afternoons and a raffle held in the church. The Show has
been organised for 37 years; let us hope we can keep it going as it is a
competitive, but good natured community event open to six villages. The judges
comment on the talent amongst the parishes plus the standard and effort the
exhibitors have made to showcase their work, and the work of the committee to
ensure all is set out to a good standard. Good Luck to all for a successful Show.
Ride & Stride–Saturday 14th September: This event is a good way to help
support Northamptonshire Historic Churches Trust and the Parish Church of your
choice by gaining sponsorship to cycle, walk or be a recorder in the church. The
event timing is officially from 10:00am to 6.00pm but you do not have to be active
for all of that time! A one or two hour slot recording the walkers or cyclists in the
church, or walking/cycling during that time to the churches listed to record your
visit is all that is required. Please support this event, I have the sponsorship forms
and details ready for those willing to take the challenge; a walk from Bulwick
church to Blatherwycke church, or maybe cycle to Laxton or King’s Cliffe.

Laxton Village Hall July was a quiet month at the Village Hall but, fortunately, the weather improved
and the heating was not required! We are still awaiting the funding confirmation
for Film Night but remain hopeful that the nights will restart in the Autumn and
continue over Winter as per previous years.
The summer tends to be a quieter season for Laxton Village Hall so please do
remember that it is available to hire for your own events, and suggestions for
events that you would like to see are always welcome, as are offers to help
organise them! For information on the hire process and costs or to offer help or
ideas please contact [email protected] or via our social media channels:
Village Hall Laxton on Facebook or @halllaxton on Twitter.
Book Club–13th August 7.30pm: The book to be discussed at the August meeting
is Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan. A Guardian review in 2017 said: “A work of
remarkable cinematic scope, Manhattan Beach portrays the lives of an Irish family
in Brooklyn, set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and then the
Second World War. A young woman becomes a diver to help the war effort and
uncovers the powerful forces that led to her beloved father’s disappearance; a
father is forced to leave his family behind to save his own life; and a successful
mobster gets swept up in cultural tides that threaten everything he’s built.”
The book to be read over August is free choice, enabling local bibliophiles to read
whatever takes their fancy over August, then bring it for discussion in September.
New members are warmly welcomed to our lively discussion group. To join, or for
further information, please contact John McCrone on 01780450782.
Coffee Morning–10th August 10.30am–12.00 noon: This month’s Coffee
Morning will be held on Saturday 10th August. As always a delicious selection of
cakes will be available alongside tea and coffee, all at very reasonable prices. Do
pop along for a drink, a cake and chat. The Mortlocks
Nature Notes
14
Nature Notes for July and August There has recently been considerable publicity about the reintroduction of a
butterfly that has been absent from England for many years; the Chequered
Skipper. A small group of adults of Belgian origin was released somewhere in
Rockingham Forest last year and are beginning to establish themselves. So far I
have not been fortunate enough to find any but the improved weather has
brought out a great variety of other species along the flowering margins of the old
railway line and the widened rides in Old Sulehay.
Amongst these are a few Painted Lady butterflies that migrate here annually from
North Africa. For an insect weighing around 1 gram this is an incredible
achievement and, in some years, we have an invasion of several million, although
this is not such a year.
The last time it happened I found myself at 3000 metres on the Spanish side of
the Pyrenees. The sky was clear and a breeze blew gently up the mountain slope
as we hunted for black woodpeckers. I became aware of small parties of Painted
Ladies with as few as 5 individuals up to groups of 20 -30. These groups were
widely dispersed across the mountain slopes, flying at 50 to 100 cm above the
ground towards the top of the mountain.
This was migration in progress, but not like we see on television with vast clouds
of Monarch butterflies in North America. Even so, the numbers involved were
massive as the spectacle continued for as many hours as we were there and
probably beyond.
Once back in England I had never seen so many of these beautiful butterflies in
the garden before. For many years what happens next has only been the subject
of conjecture. Thanks to modern technology we now know that the new
generation migrate back to Africa at such an altitude that we cannot see them.

The last general Patients’ Meeting was held in June when a good attendance
heard a talk and watched Sarah-Jane Turner giving a demonstration of both CPR
and a defibrillator. It was felt that this would interest patients particularly as so
many local villages have installed this emergency equipment.
On recommendation by the officials, the meeting agreed that funds should be
provided to purchase a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure machine for use by
the practice at a cost of £1,110. A request for a paediatric probe with handheld
oximeter for use at the King’s Cliffe surgery was left in abeyance until further
funds became available.
Dr Takhar gave an update on the proposed National Primary Care Network due to
be formally introduced in this area last month. Details had already been outlined
and the final arrangements will be available and reported at the next meeting. He
also reported on the work of the surgery’s research team: following a request, six
patients have volunteered to join a research panel working in conjunction with
Cambridge University on the use of anti-depressants.
Congratulations were extended to Dr Takhar on his recent invitation with his wife
to a garden party at Buckingham Palace. He was nominated for services and work
within the NHS. Congratulations were also passed to the practice and pharmacy
for winning the GP Partnership of the Year category sponsored by NAPP which
acknowledges development and sharing information and ideas between practice
and pharmacy teams.
It was suggested that a topic for a future meeting might be ‘Self-Care’ to cover the
emphasis now placed on patients to purchase certain over-the-counter drugs
rather than expecting provision by the NHS. This could save some £6M per year.
It was noted that Mrs Wagstaffe will be tendering her resignation as Chairperson
at the forthcoming AGM next month, Tuesday 10th September 2019 at Wansford
Surgery at 6.30pm, although she will remain as an official continuing the
organization of social group activities. Dr Nally will be giving a talk on the very
topical subject of mental health.
The next Social Group Coffee Morning will be at 10.0am on Friday 13th September
at King’s Cliffe Active Hall. There is still limited availability on the late summer
4-night coach holiday to St. Leonards-on-Sea leaving on Tuesday 17th September.

Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre
The Peterborough Minor Illness and Injury Unit (MIIU) at the City Care Centre,
Thorpe Road has been renamed as the Peterborough Urgent Treatment Centre
(UTC). This is in line with national NHS guidance to standardise urgent care
services to help ease the pressure on hospitals whilst simplifying the choice of
services for patients.
The Peterborough UTC will continue to provide the same service as before,
remaining open from 8.00am to 8.00pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. With no
appointment needed, the Peterborough UTC treats patients with illnesses and
injuries that need attention urgently but are not critical or life threatening such as:
• sprains, strains, cuts and grazes
• arm, foot and leg injuries
• bites, minor burns and scalds
• suspected fractures or broken bones (X-ray available)
• minor head injuries
• eye problems such as scratches and foreign bodies in the eye.
Patients (adults and children aged two or over) are seen by highly skilled nurse
practitioners and GPs with X-Ray services available.
Dr Andrew Anderson, local GP and Urgent Care clinical lead said: “If you have an
urgent injury or illness that is not serious or life threatening then head to the
Peterborough UTC. Available seven days a week and no appointment needed,
you will be seen by highly skilled nurses or a GP who will assess, advise and
provide treatment if required. By choosing the right service for your illness or
injury you not only ensure you receive the right care at the right time, but that
our vital emergency services are prioritised for those who need them most.”
Urgent Treatment Centres offer a standardised level of care. All UTCs are GP-led,
open at least 12 hours a day, every day, and are equipped to diagnose and deal
with many of the urgent, but not life threatening, common ailments people
attend A&E for. If you have an urgent medical concern, or are unsure which
service is right for you, call NHS 111. Open 24/7, trained medical advisors will
access your symptoms and direct you to the appropriate service. Depending on
the situation, the team can connect you to a nurse, dentist or a GP.
