From the Parish Priest

“Coming together midweek for prayer and reflection”

There are regular Sunday opportunities for worship throughout the year in

each Parish Church across the Benefice. Mainly these are services of Holy

Communion, but there are also services of the word, evening services,

carol services and special services for significant times like Remembrance

Sunday.

Currently there are fewer opportunities for more informal gatherings for

prayer and reflection. To this end, we begin in October a twice monthly

midweek evening gathering. The format will include time for quiet and

prayer, and for readings and music. Each gathering will last about 30 to 45

minutes with tea or coffee to follow.

I am looking to hold the first of these at 8.00pm on Thursday 4th October,

in King’s Cliffe Church and then on Thursday 18th October, Monday 5th

November, Thursday 22nd November and Monday 3rd December. Please

note these dates have been amended from those previously given. In

time I hope that, once established, we could also hold these gatherings in

other churches across the Benefice.

Connecting the Christian story with daily life is a challenge and I hope that

these sessions, by giving time and space for reflection, for raising

questions and having open conversation, will be a support in enabling that

story to be meaningful and encouraging. Philip Davies

Food Basket There is a Food Basket at the back of the church in King’s Cliffe. Donations of any non-perishable food can be added to the basket. If you are in need

of any extra food please help yourself.

The Church Office can now issue vouchers for the Stamford Foodbank. They are able to provide 3 days worth of emergency food for individuals

and families in financial crisis.

Coffee Morning Following the summer break the September Church Coffee Morning at the home

of Christine and John Ball was very well attended. It was a very joyful occasion to

catch up with friends old and new. Thank you Chris and John for making us so

welcome and comfortable in your home. Thank you to all who came along, and

thank you for the raffle prizes which were donated. We were able to add £110 to

our Church funds.

The next Coffee Morning is on October 10th at the home of Doreen and Richard

Bain at 15b Bridge Street. We look forward to seeing everyone there.

King’s Cliffe Women’s Fellowship We began our first meeting after the summer break with a ‘Show and Tell’ session

given by members. This proved to be very interesting with the sharing of favourite

poems and the showing of old photographs and Sunday School books which

provoked childhood memories for a number of us. Some ladies showed their

amazing craft skills with displays of knitting, quilting, embroidery and lacemaking.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, 4th October at 2:00pm in the CHAOS

room, King’s Cliffe Church when Mandy Barber will demonstrate her card making

skills. New members are always welcome. Christine Ball

King’s Cliffe Heritage Our meeting on Wednesday October 17th is all about the history of the Post

Office in Cliffe, illustrated with pictures from our archives, old and more recent,

recollections about Post Offices in the past and artefacts given to us over the

years. We meet at 7.30pm in the KC Active Clubhouse and everyone is welcome.

Admission for KCH Members £1, non-members £2; tea/coffee & biscuits £1.

Our Heritage Centre at 27 Bridge Street opens for the last time this year on

Sunday 28th October from 2.00 to 5.00pm. If you haven’t visited yet, do come to

see our unique collection of Cliffe woodware and many other village artefacts

displayed there and explore the village in the past through the images and

information in our archive. Entry is free and we have paper-based activities for

children. Please be aware, we do not have toilet facilities. Look for our hanging

sign on Bridge Street that tells you we are open. Level access to the Centre is via

a ramp at the rear. After October, we close for the winter months, opening again

on the 4th Sunday of February, but you can contact us to arrange a visit by calling

our dedicated switchboard number 08438 869395 and leaving a message.

News from King’s Cliffe

King’s Cliffe Parish Council Grit Bins: The Parish Council has been notified that, as a result of budget cuts at

County level, there will be a reduction in road clearing and maintenance during

serious weather conditions i.e. snow and ice. In light of this, the Parish Council

has agreed to bear the cost of filling the existing grit bins where NCC will no

longer be doing so, as well as paying for the installation and upkeep of a new grit

bin on Oak Lane. Now what they are looking for is the good will, co-operation and

community spirit of all villagers in spreading this grit, when and where it is needed.

It is there for all of us to use; there is no official grit-spreader so any assistance

would be very welcome and you don’t need special permission to do it.

Crime: There has been a spate of crime in the area over the last couple of

months, which is a cause for serious concern. At their September meeting, the

Parish Council noted the complete lack of official police crime reports in recent

months, despite the rise in crime, and it was decided to contact the Police

Commissioner to find out why and to seek their reinstatement. It was also felt

that the attendance of a community officer at the next PC meeting should be

requested, as it is a considerable time since this has happened.

Celebrating King’s Cliffe Community: The celebratory events are now over, but it

is hoped that the effects will continue to draw villagers together to recognise and

enjoy the many and varied aspects of living in King’s Cliffe. On the whole it has

been a great success, and the Heritage Society’s blue plaque scheme, in particular,

aroused a great deal of interest and curiosity about the buildings and history of

the village. It is fair to say that it has got people talking, in a good way, and it

would be lovely to think that something similar can be achieved in future years to

encourage greater community involvement and even wider interest.

Housing Needs Report and Neighbourhood Plan A big thank you to everyone who completed the Housing Needs Survey. The first

draft of the Housing Needs Report has just been received and is being reviewed.

It is a totally independent (and anonymous) report of the results of the Housing

Needs Survey conducted in July 2018 by Midlands Rural Housing, an independent

organisation providing services to assess the needs for housing in rural areas.

We are hoping to publish the final Report within the next month. It will form part

of the evidence base for the Neighbourhood Plan and we will ensure the

Neighbourhood Plan reflects the results of the Housing Needs Survey and

therefore the housing needs of our Parish.

Thank you all for taking the time to complete the survey and for the input we

have received from our community for the Neighbourhood Plan. We will keep

you posted about the publication of the Housing Needs Report and the next steps

Laid Back Ladies The next meeting is on Tuesday 16th October at 7.30 pm in the Ex-Servicemen’s

Club when Millstone Grit, our favourite local male singers and musicians will be

entertaining us with their unique rendition of a variety of songs. We look forward

to hearing their latest repertoire and a good evening is guaranteed. It is also time

to pay our annual subscriptions. The competition letter this month is ‘C’ so once

again get thinking of an unusual object to bring along! So often these objects

instigate tales of memories and discussion! For more information please ring

King’s Cliffe & Area Old Blokes’ Club The talk by Charles Aikenhead on the battle of Rorke’s Drift raised a magnificent

£1,786.50 to go to the Gerrard Memorial Fund to contribute to the repair of the

Anglican church in the Zulu village of Isandlwana. This was helped by having the

use of the church and the licence for the drinks provided by All Saints and St

James church in King’s Cliffe. Thanks go to Rev Philip Davies and the PCC for their

King’s Cliffe Gardeners’ Association The October meeting will take place on Wednesday 24th October at 7.30pm when

Dennis Smith will be talking on The Identification of Apples followed by a Q&A

session. If you’d like help in identifying an apple, please bring a sample fruit and a

small branch with leaves on. You are also invited to bring with you your favourite

apple recipes, or bring to share any culinary delights on the apple theme. The

meeting is open to members and non members with a nominal entry fee and no

obligation to join. There will be a raffle and refreshments will be served.

Top 10 garden jobs this month from the RHS: Divide established rhubarb crowns

to create new plants. Cut back perennials that have died down. Divide herbaceous

perennials. Move tender plants, including aquatic ones, into a greenhouse or

conservatory. Plant out spring cabbages. Harvest apples, pears, grapes and nuts.

Prune climbing roses. Finish collecting seeds from the garden to sow next year.

Last chance to mow lawns and trim hedges. Renovate old lawns or create new

King’s Cliffe Active Trustees: KC Active is a charity and is managed and developed by volunteer

Trustees. We were sad to lose Andrew Pick and Ian Cooke at our Annual General

Meeting on 10th December and are therefore looking to recruit new Trustees. If

you have an interest in contributing to the development of KC Active at a very

exciting time please get in touch.

Pavilion Extension to create a Gym, Community Library and BizSpace and Café.

Unfortunately East Northamptonshire Council have determined that a new Full

Planning application is required, so we are submitting one upon completion of an

Ecological (Adder) Report but this pushes construction back probably to early

2019. We have secured a further £15,000 from Sport England (on top of £100,000

total already secured from ENC and KCEA/Augean). We are working with an

organisation called Locality to develop business plans for the charity. We have a

number of other funding avenues in mind so that we do have enough for all of

our development plans.

Play: We have put an application in to East Northamptonshire Community

Facilities Fund for £30,000 for additional Play Equipment on our site. We will also

need to secure £10,000 partnership funding which we intend to do though

another grant application and fundraising which we hope villagers will support.

We have been very pleased to contribute to Celebrating King’s Cliffe Community

with our Have a Field Day event, and also delighted with the development of

activities at KC Active: the establishment of Junior Football and King’s Cliffe

Strictly and the development of King’s Cliffe Tennis, especially their range of

sessions on Mondays. These are now followed by Cliffe Ladies Netball Club who

train from 8.30 to 9.30pm. They are a thriving club with a squad of more than 12

ladies playing in Division One of the Stamford League on Tuesday evenings. Cost

is £3 per session but the first one is free and all abilities and new players are very

King’s Cliffe Bakery After 31 successful years at the helm, Oliver and Karen have finally decided to

hang up their aprons and take a well deserved rest. They will continue to work

alongside the new owner Tom in the coming months, with the aim of retiring to

the Isle of Man in the New Year.

Transition King’s Cliffe for environment and community

Christmas Fair 2018: We are busy organising the Christmas

Fair which is always a highlight of the festive season. An

exciting mix of new and regular local stallholders are booking

their places to share their creations. From original fine art,

jewellery and handmade candles to quilts, beautiful ceramics

and woven willow, there’s something for every taste! There

will also be the KCB Bar and food as well as tea and cakes and

live music and an opportunity to buy the first King’s Cliffe calendar created by the

KC Gardener’s Association from the winning photographic entries at the Village

Show. It’s time to get the date in your diary: Sunday 2nd December 11.00-4.00pm.

Avoid the Mall, come to the Village Hall!

Wildplaces: In September we finished the meadow management season, cutting

and clearing the wildlife area on Kingsmead, and along the railway line to the

viewpoint bench. We’re looking forward to seeing the wildflowers return in the

spring.

This month we will be tidying up Maltings Green

behind the Village Hall, to put everything to bed for

the winter. Clearing the woodland area, removing

unwanted pondweed and giving the butterbur and

nettles a final kick! If you enjoy The Green, and can

spare half an hour, then do come along and lend a

hand. Gloves and tools available for those who don’t

have their own.

We’re meeting on October 14th from 10.30 a.m., at Maltings Green. Everyone

welcome!

Transition Allotments: We have had enough interest to extend our mini

allotment scheme and split up another half-plot so we will be busy this autumn

preparing the beds for spring planting.

Minibus: Now that summer’s over the Transition Minibus has lots of availability

for group outings, parties etc. Please remember to take a photo of Transition Ted

somewhere exotic and post it on our Facebook page!

The Way We Were

The Way We Were King’s Cliffe Bakery in West Street has recently changed hands. After baking for us

all for 31 years, Oliver and Karen O’Sullivan are looking forward to a well-earned

rest when they move to the Isle of Man where Oliver can indulge his love of golf.

Our new owner/baker is Tom Priestley, who lives in Oak Lane. Tom took over on

September 3rd with Oliver and Karen staying on for a few months to support him.

The bakery Deeds go back to 1794, though it is likely there was a bakery there

before that. The first baker named in the Deeds is William Wadwell in 1794,

followed by his son, also called William. Then in 1866 came John Sharp, a baker

from Deeping St James. It returned to the Wadwell family in 1872 but was let to

tenants - brothers Charles and George Eudall, bakers and confectioners.

In 1885 the bakery changed hands again, when it was bought by James Kingston

(grandfather of Jim Kingston who lives with wife Gill in Park Street). James

Roberts, growing up in the village in the 1880s and 90s, recalled James Kingston

and his brother Frank as ‘small farmers, bakers and confectioners’. In 1914,

James Kingston let the bakery to William Ingle and his son Ernest, who traded as

Ingle and Son, Bakers and Confectioners. Then, in 1921 William Ingle bought the

bakery and ran it until 1934 when he moved to Glinton. The contract for sale of

the bakery stipulated that the outgoing baker should not for 5 years be involved,

directly or indirectly, in the business of a baker within 5 miles as the crow flies.

Perhaps this is why Mr Ingle moved to Glinton. The next owner/baker was

Thomas Knight, known as ‘Tommy’. When he died in 1955, aged only forty-six, his

brother-in-law, Jack Chown, took over the bakery and was there with his wife

Frances until 1985. The business was then bought by baker Clive Tolson who ran

it for two years before selling it in 1987 to Oliver and Karen. Over these two and a

half centuries, many other local people have been employed there, some for

many years, becoming familiar faces at the bakery, in the shop and on the rounds.

The bakery shop today has traces of the bakery as it must have been in the 18th

century. The original coal-fired oven still occupies the back wall. Displayed above

is the long-handled ‘peel’ for placing large tins and loaves into the oven, and the

narrower ‘slip’ for rolls and other small items. Today, the ovens are electric and

the centuries-old wooden dough trough, which still stood in the shop in 1987, is

replaced by stainless steel. The dough trough found a new home with John and

Jane Paige across the street at the Old Brewery Studios.

Over the past thirty-one years, Oliver and Karen have produced with great care

and craftmanship many thousands of loaves, rolls, cakes, hot cross buns and other

baked goodies which have been enjoyed, not only in King’s Cliffe, but in a wide

surrounding area. Now, as Tom Priestley takes over as our village baker, I wish

Oliver and Karen great enjoyment in their retirement and Tom every success for

St Nicholas Church, Bulwick An Evening of Old Time Music: This will be an evening of musical entertainment

at 7.30pm on 19th October. If previous performances by Sounds Sensation are

anything to go by, a good evening is guaranteed. Tickets are £10 for adults, £5 for

16 years and under to include a glass of wine or non alcoholic drink plus nibbles.

There will be a good raffle, and for those who have joined in the fun of wearing a

hat or other adornment to signify their favourite music era, a prize awaits. If you

have not already secured your ticket contact Alma on 450300 or Annette on

450096. All proceeds for church funds.

Annual Horticultural Show Results: The Annual Horticultural Show over the Bank

Holiday weekend was staged in St Nicholas Church with teas and stalls in the

Village Centre. There was good support from all the eligible villages with a total of

360 exhibits. The vegetable section was slightly down from last year but the

exhibits were of the usual high standard and kept the judges busy. The

Gentlemen’s Challenge of a Coconut Cake to their own recipe had the gentleman

vying for the highest points but, despite strong competition from the other

exhibitors, and for the third year in succession, Mr Ken Frankland of Harringworth

took the O’Neill Tankard. The winners for the sections were as follows:

full schedule will be issued in April 2019. Well done everybody.

Jumble Sale : Two jumble sales are held each year to raise the funds for printing

the schedules for the Horticultural Show and engraving the cups and trophies.

The second jumble sale of the year will be held on Saturday 6th October from

10.00am to 12 noon at Bulwick Village Centre. Admission is 50p for adults but no

charge for children accompanying an adult. If you have any clean and in good

condition clothes, shoes, bric a brac/household items (but not electrical items

please) bring them along to the Village Centre on Friday 5th October between

6.00pm and 8.00pm or contact me. We have quite a stock of books so may not

need more this time. Your support will be gratefully received.

The Good Pumpkin Event: Following on from last year’s fun event, Patch The

Good Pumpkin is back. Carve and decorate your pumpkin or fruit and place on

the designated windowsills or tables in the church from Saturday 27th October

through to Monday 29th October up to 5.00pm. Then, at 6.30pm on Monday

29th October, come back to the church to light up the exhibits (please use battery

tea lights, glow-sticks or a battery torch) and partake in festive refreshments

followed by the announcements of the winners. Adults and juniors throughout

the Benefice churches can enter and the categories are:

1. The Funniest. 2. The Best Dressed. 3. The Best Carving overall.

A prize will be awarded for the winning exhibit for each category.

Laxton Village Hall Laxton is such a lovely place to live and we are fortunate to have one the very

best equipped Village Halls in the district.

Sometimes we do not appreciate just how lucky we are to have such wonderful

facilities and that they do not just magically run and maintain themselves. Costs

are high and have to be paid and legal obligations met.

At present the Hall is provided free for Parish and other official meetings. It is

available for the whole community to use. Please remember that it is your valued

support at events that enables this to continue along with the hard work of the

Committee and Volunteers.

We do try to hold regular events, and others too, just to keep the doors open!

Perhaps you have an idea and would like to organise a fund raiser? You are

always welcome to put your own events on too. The hire rate is very reasonable.

Coffee Morning: Our monthly Coffee Morning will be on Saturday 6th October at

10.30am and will be hosted by John and Julie McCrone. Do pop in for a drink and

a chat with friends and neighbours. Everyone is always most welcome. Lots of

our nearby villagers support us too, indeed, some regulars travel over 20 miles.

We must be doing something right in Laxton! As always if you have any excess

Garden Produce or homemade Jams or Chutneys you would like to donate then

please do bring them along.

Book Club: The meeting this month will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday 9th October to

discuss The Warden by Anthony Trollope. New members are always welcome.

It’s a very social evening with plenty of chatter and the odd glass of wine! To join,

Film Night: Our first film of the season will be shown at 7.30pm on Tuesday 2nd

October: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society (Cert. 12A).

The film begins in London in 1946 when a charismatic and free-spirited writer

receives a letter from a member of a mysterious literary club started in Nazi-

occupied Guernsey. Her curiosity piqued she decides to visit the island. There

she meets the delightfully eccentric members of the Guernsey Literary and Potato

Peel Pie Society and the rugged and intriguing farmer who wrote her the letter. As

Underground Centre (Lower Floor Village Hall) Target 10: Underground are currently 9 months into our Target 10 campaign.

We’re aiming to raise £10,000 in this our tenth birthday year. We have to date

raised £7,196 towards our target with 3 months and some events to go. We’re on

track and so grateful for all the help and support received thus far - thank you!

King’s Cliffe Community Sewing Bee: Can you use a sewing machine? Would you

like to learn? Come and be part of King’s Cliffe Community Sewing Bee! The aim

is to make 100 simple bags to sell at Transition Fairs each December to raise

money for community organisations. This year proceeds will go to Underground -

next year it will be someone else! This is a great way to meet new people and

learn or share a skill. There will be two open sessions for anyone wanting to come

and join in and there will also be ready made kits and instructions to take away

for anyone who would like to help the project from home! The sessions will be on

Wednesdays from 1.00-2.30pm and Thursdays 7.30-9.00pm, both at Underground.

Sewing machines and refreshments provided! No regular commitment required -

come when you can! All welcome!

Charity Bingo: Come and join us at the Club on October 13th from 8.00pm for our

Charity Bingo Night with proceeds to Underground and many thanks to the Club

for their support.

Spooky Snacktacular: Underground are bringing back this favourite from 2015!

Come and join us on Monday 22nd October 10.00 to 11.30am for a morning of

making (and eating!) a variety of spooky snacks. Open to all age youngsters.

Original Ceramics: Justine from Original Ceramics will be in the Village Hall from

9.30 to 3.00pm to Wednesday 24th October. Drop-in anytime (no booking

required) and paint a choice of items from coasters, mugs and plates to teapots

and cake stands! These are ideal Christmas gifts for children of all ages to make

and give! Underground will be selling drinks and cakes alongside and downstairs

will be open for Tiddlers throughout the day.

Pizza Mondays: Underground is now open every Monday evening from 6.00 to

7.30pm for anyone in Yrs 7-13 to come along for pizza. £1 entrance. Additional

£1 for pizza. All welcome!

AGM: Underground’s AGM will be on November 14th, 8pm at Underground. All

are welcome to join us to review our 2017/18 year and hear of our plans for the

Nature Notes for September and October Fields which were once golden after the harvest are already fading to a browner

hue. The hedgerows are now gaining brighter colours with red hawthorn berries,

orange rose hips, purplish sloes and elderberries and a profusion of blackberries.

All of these will be welcome food for the overwintering birds, especially members

of the thrush family when they arrive.

The continuing, mainly dry weather has suppressed the regrowth of grasses and

wild flowers so that butterflies now seem far less numerous. Even the usually

common peacock butterfly is absent from the garden this year.

Beside a local river I came across a pile of empty freshwater mussel shells. They

were a metre or so from a gently sloping section of river bank. It was clearly an

otter feeding station, but there was not an otter in sight. This is not surprising as

they patrol many miles of river with resting points and feeding places along its

length. It is normal for them to feed in one place for a day or so before moving

on, thus ensuring that the food source is not over fished.

One early morning in autumn some time ago in a Suffolk reedbed the experience

was very different. A female otter was hunting for fish whilst her two cubs were

play fighting close to the reeds. They rolled over and over in the water, baring

their teeth at one another for almost half an hour. Although this family was

reputed to exist mainly on tiny sticklebacks, today mum came up with a much

larger fish, a roach. This was something they could all share and they headed

rapidly for the bank and their breakfast.

That was the last I saw of them and they did not return to the same place to fish

next day. Such sightings are rare and difficult to plan for but our local rivers have

provided views of otters to a number of people. So keep looking! Fledgling

Communicare We held our 38th Annual General Meeting last month and welcomed Dr Rhiannon

Nally and Ms Annette Johnson, representing the practice and eleven patients.

The officials report, which covered activities of the group over the past twelve

months, was presented to the meeting along with the statement of account for

the year ended 31st July 2018 submitted by the Treasurer who was unfortunately

unable to attend due to ill health. His report drew attention to a number of

points including the transfer of the bank account to Barclays due to the closure of

the Norwich & Peterborough Building Society. He had also prepared a listing

spanning the past 38 years showing almost £98k had been provided by the group

for the purchase of equipment. These funds are raised both by donation and

various activities, but over the past year the level of donations is down. However,

he confirmed a small increase in the value of the Charifund Units held by the

group but recommended that this asset should only be used in extreme

circumstances. The Chairperson also extended thanks to Mr and Mrs Reilly of

King’s Cliffe for their donation raised by holding a coffee morning.

There being no nominations, the attending officials were returned to office for a

further year but Mrs Wagstaffe stated that she was only willing to serve for one

more year and will be relinquishing her role as chairperson at next year’s AGM.

Mr Gilbert Markley was willing to continue in office as Treasurer but he would not

be able to attend meetings and the post should therefore be offered to the

meeting. Mrs Lindsey Freeman indicated that she was willing to take over the

role and was formally nominated and elected. Mrs Wagstaffe on behalf of the

officials and the meeting extended very warm gratitude to Gilbert for all his hard

work and commitment over the many years he had been treasurer. Following a

request, Mrs Heather Gough agreed to become an officer with no specific role

and was duly thanked.

A proposal was accepted to cease circulating minutes of meetings (with the

exception of the AGM) to the patient email list and replace them with a short

report, similar to that published in the village magazines. DNAs were still running

at around 70 per month and this was highlighted in the surgery’s seasonal

newsletter and on the website. Dr Nally suggested a possible better method of

directing incoming telephone calls by way of a doctor’s recorded message asking

patients to give concise but clear details of their problem to enable receptionists

to direct the call to the best adviser or book an appointment with the most

suitable member of the team.

A letter had been received from Volunteer Action in Oundle regarding their

ongoing assistance with patient transport. Although Northamptonshire based,

they at present cover journeys outside the county and only charge the patient for

mileage from their pickup point to destination – the costs of getting the transport

to the patients location is covered by VA. Their current £5k annual running costs

are funded from various authorities and donors. It was agreed that the group will

donate £250 to ensure the continuation of this valuable service and Dr Nally will

consult with Dr Takhar with a view to matching this sum from the practice.

Details were given of the forthcoming Yarwell & Nassington Britannia Band

concert on 12th October from which Communicare will benefit as the nominated

partnership charity. Sale of tickets, distribution of leaflets and organisation of the

raffle were underway and offers of help on the night were gratefully accepted.

Future meetings for the coming year will continue quarterly with the first

scheduled for Wednesday 28th November. Several suggestions were tabled for

possible speakers. The social group had enjoyed a holiday in Devon last month

and continue to meet monthly for a Coffee Morning at King’s Cliffe Active Hall;
