Marriage is a legal and civil contract with the government that allows two people to function as a single entity

Marriage includes about 400 state benefits, and 1,000 federal benefits. These financial benefits are provided in exchange for

the role marriage plays in making society stronger

Gay marriage is the union of two people of the same gender. Homosexual couples experience discrimination on both the

personal and legal level.

Gay couples are often denied the ability to receive government benefits for dependents such as Social Security payments, making

decisions for an incarcerated partner, or to have their family structure viewed as normal.

The debate surrounding same-sex marriage involves personal issues, such as their ability to adequately raise children in a “normal” family setting, their ability to contribute positively to society, or to maintain

meaningful, loving relationships
