Greetings members, as this my first chat as the 2017 /2018 president,

I’d like thank everyone that turned up to the annual general meeting and voted for the

new committee, and secondly I’d like to acknowledge the great work and time that

Fred Chapman, as president, has put in to the club. Nobody can deny that Fred has

certainly put his heart and soul into advancing the club, thank you Fred.

I am keenly looking forward to helping make our club better for everyone. Value

adding, I believe is the term used. Apart from chairing meetings in a different way, I

would like to encourage all members to participate, It’s easy to turn up for a run, sign

the sheet and toddle off, but it takes organizing, as we all know, lots of work is done

behind the scenes to make any event successful. With this in mind, I along with the

committee are keen to ensure that those who continually make their time and skills

available to the club are acknowledged and properly thanked .

The swap meet is our largest undertaking and thankfully there are dozens of

people that just step up, do their bit and disappear again. I can’t imagine where the club would be if all those people decided to take

holidays all at swap meet time. Thank you, and thank you to those who have volunteered again for this year.

I’m sensing a ground swell of enthusiasm for the possibilities coming along. There are many people with good ideas and I’d like to

encourage you to talk to a committee person, and we’ll see if we can get it to work. Different types of runs, as an instance, like a pistol

shoot run, a grandpa’s run, whisky taste run, having a member’s lounge at the swap meet and many more ideas subject of course to

committee perusal and approval.

With the new legislation now enacted it’s time to seek new members, its the time to be proactive , chat with your mates that have

projects in their sheds that need finishing , and bring them along to a meeting , it might reinvigorate their shed passion.

Establishing the new club rooms is big on the horizon, and the committee will be discussing how and what is the best approach, If you

have ideas, let us know.

I’m feeling comfortable and confident with the

challenges before me and am sure we are in for a

successful and fulfilled future.

May the (horse) power be with you.

The best SHED FIND

ever Very early in the piece of my Variety ad-

ventures, I took a friend with me whom on

completion of that year’s event (that he

had thoroughly enjoyed), made a comment

that stuck with me for many years after.

He said “You are bold running a vehicle like

this one. If you break down out in the bush

where the hell are you going to get parts to

fix this , especially if your at the back of

BOURKE? At least with a Holden, Ford or

popular make, you have some chance” .

True , it was one of those issues that you

know can happen, but like most people you

keep it out of mind by assuming it may hap-

pen to others but will never happen to you.

Well, a few years later the inevitable hap-

pened. We had packed up from our night

stop at White Cliffs headed north to the

next night stop at Wanaaring (some 200km

west of Bourke). We had been travelling on

very dusty tracks for days and I had run out

of good air filters for the carby, so was con-

cerned about all the fine dust being sucked

into the cylinders. Anyway some 30km out

of Wanaaring the inevitable happened , and

YES it just died instantly (with a bang I might

add).

Interestingly, my old bash mate in his

freshly prepared AP6 valiant Station wagon

was right behind me. After a few laughs

and a few tears we hooked up the Old-Inter

and he towed me into Wanaaring, pulling

up in the center of the little township right

in front of the only Pub in town. We in-

stantly became the “New Attraction” for

both Bashers & locals alike. An in-depth

diagnosis by the ‘Bash MW’s’ followed,

resulting in the conclusion that the damage

was fatal /not fixable /needs another

“DONK” and “you ain’t gunna find one of

them too easy around here”.

That particular year was a National Bash (all states combined) due to finish in Bris-bane in four days’ time. Yep ,we the Bash 500 crew were well truly peeeded off.

I along with my crew then parked our-selves along the bar of the Wanaaring Hotel to drown our sorrows.

As we drank and drowned resolutions to out dilemma , this little short guy (I am short so I rarely have the chance to call some-one else short) approached me and after the pleasantries of introduction with my new found friend ‘ short Doug’ , the conversation went a bit like this. >“ G’Day mate , is that your truck out there?” <“ It sure is but it won’t be moving any-where as it’s thrown a rod … now totally dead. The guy then waddled up to the front of the Pub and gave the old inter a more de-tailed look through the front window then came back with; >“I think I know where there is one exactly like that one. In fact I reckon it’s the same year & model” <“Sounds great! Does it work and is it for sale? >“Well lets hop in my jigger and go and have a look” So of I went in this guy’s Jigger …which must have been the first Toyota FJ 54 ever sold in Australia. We headed back out on the road that we had just been towed in from AND would you believe right within a hundred meters of at the very spot where we had broken

down , we turned left into a station proper-ty and headed towards the homestead some 500 metres in. As we approached ,he drove straight around to the back of the homestead where there --parked under an old elevated tank stand ---was, yes you guessed it, a 1964 AB130 International. It had been parked there for some time as the bonnet was partially opened and plants and trees were growing through it. It did not look too promising. After a close inspection of the engine bay it all looked complete with only the Carby missing , and the mani-fold had been covered up with a plastic shopping bag which had decomposed into a layer of crispy disintegrating plastic wafer. >“What do you reckon Doug.. is it a goer?” <“I don’t know but let’s find out”

We hopped into his Jigger and of we went around to the front of the homestead and to my surprise without stopping at the homestead continued out back onto the main road. At this stage I was a bit appre-hensive and thought well let’s not ask too many questions….let’s just see where this drive takes us. Well we headed straight back to the Wanaaring Hotel … by this time the little township was humming with people, bash-ers, locals and tourists all hyped up because “the Bash is in Town” ‘Doug’ drags me through the crowd and introduces me to his old mate who is sitting on a stool at the bar . In front of him were two half glasses of beer (one with a head and one looking a bit flat) He was sipping on the one with a head on. As he introduces me to his mate short Doug proceeds to drink from the other glass (flat, no-head). At this point I make the assumption that ‘Doug’ was there drinking with this bloke when this little adventure first started (now nearly an hour ago) anyway the conversa-tion went as follows: >“This bloke is in the Bash raising money for

Larry with head mechanic and bottle wash

Heintz with the 1964 AB130 INTER

5

Kids in need. The engine in his truck has thrown a rod so they need another motor. It’s the same as the old one you have at home, under the tank stand does that one work?” The old bloke was a bit under the weather but responded with excitement <” well it worked perfectly when we parked it there. When my son took over the farm he told me he didn’t like the truck so he went and bought himself one of those ‘Ford’ pick-up things so the old inter has been sitting there ever since and that was eight years ago. > “Is it for sale” “ mate if you can use it take it – you guys do a great job. I loved that truck so I would rather you use it than have to sell it off for scrap. WOW ! can’t help but be impressed by the generosity and goodwill that is endemic in country culture.

Now for the real challenge !! We had to get the old truck from the Sta-tion to some-where where we could get the motor out We had to get the motor out of the Bash Truck (Access to power and a decent pit would be essential) And all this had to be done in the next 14 hours if we were going to make the start line next morning. It’s in situations like this that one realizes how much of a well-oiled machine the Vari-ety Bash organization is because this is how the event unfolded from this point: Before I continue I need to explain a little about the official entourage of nine or ten Support Vehicles “MW” (Mobile Work-shops) that are an essential part of the Bash event. Even though these guys provide free mechanical support to all bash entrants during the running of the bash they also raise money to enter just like all other bash-ers. Well-known local personalities like BOB Geue & Duncan Richter have been long time Variety supporters through their MW entries. Within this MW group is “MW 2” lovingly referred to as ‘DUCKY’ (as he al-ways wears his trade make ‘Duck Bill Cap)”. His entry in the bash is a 1970 ‘ACCO’ mod-el International set up as a workshop and Tow truck.

So now back to the conversation at the Wanaaring Pub Doug > “ Larry I have an old shed/ workshop just down the road a bit. It has a pit big enough to take the truck. You are most welcome to use that to change motors. You just have to get some way of bringing the other truck in.”

In a flash , a quick call to the Bash Officials requesting assistance had Doug and me

sitting in Ducky’s MW2 heading out to do the pick – up

In the meantime “MW6” Bob Geue and crew had put their hand up and volun-teered to do the double engine swap and while I was out towing the other truck into town Bobby and his crew had towed my Bash truck into Doug’s shed and by the time we got back with MW2 they we already on the way to disconnecting the dead motor. Interestingly when the other truck arrived, because it had no Carby and there was no time to be wasted , good old Bobby Geue made the executive decision that they would trust the old guy in the pub and fit the motor as is. To cut a long story (night) short , four me-chanics started on the job at 7.30pm and worked nonstop all night to have the swap completed by 6.30 am the next morning… (I will always remain humbly grateful to Bobby and his crew for their efforts that night. I don’t even want to imagine the diffi-culties I would have had to overcome with-out their effort and commitment to the task that night. Anyway back to the story.)

The morning (6.30am) was crunch-time or should I say start-up time or should it be trust in the old guy who had generously donated the engine time, either way Bobby Geue / Duncan Richter and the rest of the MW Crew were are all hovering around the engine bay. I am in the cockpit hands on the key ready to “fire it up”. Bobby had already given the engine a spin over without the spark plugs, so we knew that all the internal bits were in the right places. I turn the key and it slowly starts to groan and moan. Stop says Bobby as he quickly links in another battery online li “don’t want to kill the batteries before we even get started” he says. “Go on give it another go” Second spin.. lots of unpleasant and dis-turbing engine noises as it coughs, splutters and as we stop again it backfires. Third time lucky shouts Bob as it slowly ap-pears to ease up and pick –up crank speed ..cough-bang-splutter-bang-bang-splutter and of it goes to the jubilation of all the overnight crew. It’s now turning over on its own steam BUT boy o’ boy it sounds just as bad as the motor we took out. Disap-pointment is on everyone’s face as Bobby casually turns around to ‘Doug’ “Have you got any “Morey’s Oil” Sure have replies Doug “ got a whole drum of it”

By now it’s now just on 7 am. The MW team have been working all night some of them having missed out on dinner from the previous night. “Guys wash your hands and go off to breakfast.” Says BOB I’ll stay here

and load this engine up with Morey’s Oil while Larry and his 500 crew pack up the tools and clean-up. We will meet you all at the start line”. As they, leave Bobby drops the oil and replaces it with a full sump of Morey’s oil. We fire it up again as Bobby gives me the final instructions: “Don’t turn this engine off at all today not even at lunchtime just keep it running … don’t push it too hard along the bash route just keep it revving below 2200”. Let’s see what it sounds like tonight when we get into St George”.

As I pulled up at the start line the truck sounded like the engine had been replaced with what sounded very much like an old ‘Commer Nokka Diesel’ but there was ‘Doug’ with a proud look his face as many people gathered around in amazement that the engine swap had been completed over-night and that Bash 500 made it to the start line. Suffice to say that that during the course of the day the engine got quieter and quieter and not only did Bash 500 com-plete the next 4 days of bashing but that engine performed reliably on the two day return journey from Brisbane back to Gawler. And YES before the next bash the truck was fitted with a recondition short-block motor which is still performing in the truck to this day AND YES you will rightly guess…I am a complete convert to Morey’s Oil I refer back to my mate that originally

made the comment about finding parts out

in the bush:

We are still good mates and he has since entered his own vehicle – or should I say vehicles – in the annual Variety Bash. His first entry was an AP5 Valiant S/wagon which lasted 2 years (he called it a lemon) He then ran a HR Holden for 3 years and is now on his third vehicle a HQ s/wagon) I’m still in my good old faithful 1964 Interna-tional AB 130

“I think we can all agree. Its

stuffed….needs a new ‘DONK’

I reckon”Bash 500”ain’t going nowhere

Another Great Club Long Weekend Run. 28 members enjoyed this long weekend run to Whyalla and Iron Knob. We first grouped together at the Whyalla Hummock Hill Lookout and had a good look across most of the city and surrounds. An interesting sight was the gigantic clouds of steam being puffed out of the Steelworks into a beautiful blue sky. We then went down and looked through the Art work in the Darling Terrace Gal-lery, after which we moved down to the Marina to check out the Dolphins and fishing people. That evening we visited the Whyalla Vintage & Classic Car Club premises where we met some of their members and enjoyed the best dinner ever, put on by mem-bers of that club.Special thanks to the Ladies for their work with the lovely salads and deserts. Their club is great and they have their own top class large building mainly con-structed by their members. We all thoroughly enjoyed this visit. and our President Fred gave a good vote of thanks to their club President for making us so welcome. On Sunday we had a good look over the Maritime Museum including the large Why-alla ship and museum with model railway. Lunch was had there and then we drove across to Iron Knob to gather at the Visitor Centre. There we were shown a film about the early days of mining in the area and a good welcome from their Club. Then a couple of us drove their mini tourist vans to the mines and around the town while a guide on board gave us a lot of very interest-ing information about the mines and the town. We then returned to the Visitor Centre where we were served a top class afternoon tea while we looked around this interesting building at their many displays and items for sale. That evening we dined at the Sundowner Hotel at Whyalla. On Monday we grouped at the Mount Laura Homestead which covers a large area and has several museum type buildings with some very interesting displays. We then drove nearby to look at a local club members home displays of cars and oth-er items. After that some drove across to Point Lowly while others took the long drive home Thank you to June Kent for providing us with her unique Memento signs, and to Steven Harvey for his organisation of this top event. Regards Brewan

Winter Solstice, a perfect day for a visit to the Planetarium. 14 members gathered at PP for a leisurely drive to the Diner at One Tree Hill, where we met up with the others, making a total of 24 members. Morning tea was had with heaps of chatter and enjoying the warm winter sun. We then headed off to the Planetarium, found our parks and were soon seated peering skyward at ‘Largs’. The Planetarium staff are extremely knowledgeable about all things heavenly, stars, planets, zodiac signs etc. We even saw the night sky from 4000 years ago, not much has changed! After visiting he planets, we headed off to Natural Built Environments where Michelle was forced (by time) to give a brief description of their testing facility and answer all questions fired at her. Then we went to the Cross Keys Hotel, more chatter, a hearty meal and more chatter. Hope you enjoyed the Solstice. Regards Gordon.

PLANETARIUM RUN………………………………...……………..Wednesday 21st June 2017

Weather was not as cold as it has been this morning for our members Buffet Break-fast. Like previous visits there was ample food for all so no excuse if anyone went hungry All mingled and had a good chat with a lovely drive to and from the Restaurant. Many thanks to all who made the effort to come along. I really appreciated your presence mak-ing for a great morning drive for our vehicles and us to enjoy, better on the road than in the shed I say! S.A.WATER BOLIVAR PLANT RUN …………………Wednesday 12th July 2017

We had a good day out today with a total of 33 members on this run. 20 went on the guid-ed tour of the Sewerage Plant, while the others enjoyed a tour of Crispy Creme with Doughnuts and coffee whilst waiting for the sewerage works tour to finish. The Guide for the Tour was Emma ,and she explained in depth the workings of the Plant ,so that we had a good understanding of the treatment of our sewerage from the raw state to the outcome of drinka-ble water. After the talk we had a good walk around the plant . No Pictures were allowed to be taken there. We expected to see a few of the old Turds floating around., but only saw brown and somewhat smelly mud stuff. I was told by one bloke, that he knows a few Turds still walking around, but I did not know what he meant ? At times we

were wishing that we were upwind. but all survived even without life jackets. Anyhow it was a really interesting tour and we learned a lot. After this we regrouped for a nice lunch and chat at the St Kilda Hotel. Our thanks go to Geoffrey Bergamin for organising this event. Regards Brewan

SWAN REACH RUN to the river………………………........Sunday 30th July 2017

The weather bureau forecast rain but got it wrong again. We had a clear cool day with frequent sunshine, perfect for an old car adventure. There was quite a crowd at the start, bigger than expected owing to the story about this event in the local Bunyip. A very scenic drive to our coffee stop at Sedan where we relaxed with a cuppa and chat with our likeminded adventurers. On to Swan Reach, a short voyage across to the town where we waited for all to arrive, before driving on to the local museum. This museum in located in the old school building and surrounding sheds and displayed a most interesting and informative display from earlier days in Swan Reach. A very well laid out and fascinating museum that is a credit to the local community. We had arranged lunch at the Swan Reach Hotel, poised well above river level with great views of the punt and river area. The food was well worth waiting for and it was most enjoyable relaxing over lunch with such a large group of friends. There were 49 of us including some who had read about this Run and decided to tag along. They were made most welcome. After lunch we headed off to explore the Punyelroo Cave, a winter dwelling historically of local indigenous tribal people and a natural cave, easily explored but not easy to get to. Many members looked at the start of the trail down the cliff and decided maybe to Google it rather than risk life and limb climbing down to the river level. The cave is easier to reach by boat or if you happen to be swimming by in the area. We moved on in convoy to the Big Bend Lookout where there were excellent river views. Then through to Nildottie to Walkers Flat, another short voyage to the other side where we took advantage of the coffee and ice creams while we waited for everyone to cross the river. A few anxious moments when the punt conked out but it eventually moved again. We had a couple from near Port Lincoln as passengers and we enjoyed their com-pany and the scenic drive home through Mt. Pleasant and Williamstown. A great Run Bruce and Anne, sincere thanks from everyone. Cheers Treb

SPARROW RUN to Monkey NutCafe Lyndoch…………...Sunday August 6, 2017

It was a cold overcast morning with 27 members leaving @ 8.30am for a scenic drive to Lyndoch via Mengler’s Hill. It was very cold & windy at the look-out but surprisingly clear with great views of the Barossa. We then continued on to Lyndoch with a bit of rain that stopped when we reached our destination. We were joined by 3 other members for a buffet breakfast of cereal,

fruit, yoghurt, bacon, scrambled egg, sausage, tomatoes, baked beans, toast & mini danish. I don’t think we will need any lunch. It was a good morning had by all. Cheers Lorraine.

DOWN UNDER LONDON TO BRIGHTON RUN FOR VETERAN VEHICLES IN OCT. On the first of October this year the Down Under London to Brighton Run for Veteran Vehicles built be-fore Jan. 1st 1919 will depart London Rd. Mile End and head for the Brighton foreshore with a morning tea stop at the CCC Clubrooms at Glandore. This run is promising to be the biggest run ever as the date has been brought forward to align with the National Veteran Rally being held in Clare. This will be the largest collection of Veteran vehicles seen in South Australia and is a not to be missed event for your calendar. Our own David Prest is on the organizing committee with GVV&CVC Members Don & Sue Le Busque and Trevor Unsworth as entrants. Many of the Veterans on our Gawler to Barossa Veteran & Vintage Run will also be present.

Please come along to cheer along these 100 plus year old vehicles not normally seen on our roads, especially those from interstate and also make a GVV&CVC presence. The Down Under London to Brighton is usually held closer to the original UK event which is held in the first week of November to commemorate the abolishment in 1895 of the Red Flag Act which required a person proceeding a motor vehicle waving a red flag to warn others of an approaching vehicle. Since that first run there is a ceremony of the ripping of the red flag at the start of each run. Cheers TRUN The first Down Under London to Brighton Run was held on Sunday 6th November 1988 and it comprised 29 veteran cars from the SCC

[26] and VSCC [3]. This event had been the idea of Elise and Gordon Gardiner, and was organized by them and a small team from the

VSCC for about 10 years until ill health necessitated their withdrawal from the organising team. The event is still organised by a small

team of VSCC members, but entries are now accepted from any veteran vehicle owner.

The Run includes London Road, Mile End, and finishes somewhere in Brighton. The Mayors of West Torrens [London] and Holdfast

Bay [Brighton] traditionally attend the respective ends of the Run in full Mayoral regalia. Marshals for the event are drawn from

VSCC members in their vintage cars. Until 1998 the participants and marshals moved on to the Minda Fair after medal presentation

and judging however as that Fair has now been discontinued, the final venue is now determined from year to year

The Run USUALLY departs London Road, Mile End at 10am on the LAST Sunday in Oct, However, for 2017 we are changing to the

FIRST Sunday in October (1/10/17) to coincide with the National Veteran Vehicle Rally being held in and around Clare in the last week of

September. This change will enable country and interstate visitors to join our run while they are in our area.

From London Road we travel to the Combined Car Clubs clubrooms in Clark Ave Glandore, where entrants and guests can enjoy a London

Bun with tea or coffee. Vehicles will then be guided to the Wattle Reserve in Brighton where everyone will be welcomed by the City of

Holdfast Bay Mayor. (AKA Mayor of Brighton). The vehicles will then travel to a suitable destination where they will remain on display

until around 2.30pmwhile entrants enjoy their lunch (not included in $10 entry).

The Willys Overland Club of Victoria is hosting the largest assembly of Veteran Overlands at a National Rally next year in Orange NSW from October 14th to 20th. Overland vehicles were very popular in Australia and were only second in manufacture in 1918 to the Ford T. The vehicles pictured opposite page are a 1916 Model 75 Over-

land carrying shearers somewhere in SA. The building in the background looks like Anlaby Station. The second photo is the restored vehicle at the start of a Down Under London to Bright-on. Cheers TRUN

Fred Eager (left) driving 'Whitey', a 1914 model Overland

stripped down without mudguards or headlamps, which broke the

interstate speed record from Sydney to Brisbane on public roads.

Fred Eager's company was the Queensland distributor for Willys-

Overland. Interstate speed record breaking was very popular

after World War I and into the 1920s. Record breaking runs were

usually made with a single specially prepared car, with a driver

and mechanic.

Official timing was established by motoring clubs in the start

and finish cities, and a great deal of publicity could flow to drivers,

sponsors and vehicle manufacturers from the speed record

attempts. Increasing speeds on the poor roads of the day led to

crashes and serious injuries, so by the mid 1920s police were

clamping down on these runs, which were eventually banned in

1930.

To the editor This is the thing these days, with people out of work and needing cash. Beware, it's coming your way. Just last weekend on Friday night we parked in a public parking ar-ea. As we drove away I noticed a sticker on the rear window of the car. When I took it off after I got home, it was a receipt for fuel.. Luckily my friend told me not to stop as it could be someone waiting for me to get out of the car.. Then we received this email yesterday: WARNING FROM POLICE BEWARE OF PAPER ON THE BACK WINDOW OF YOUR VEHICLE --NEW WAY TO DO CARJACKING (NOT A JOKE) Be aware everyone! Please, keep this circulating.. You walk across the parking area, unlock your car and get inside. You start the engine and shift into reverse…….When you look into the rearview mirror to back out of your parking space, you notice a piece of paper stuck to the middle of the rear window. …..So, you shift into Park, unlock your doors, and jump out of your car to remove that paper (or what-ever it is) that is obstructing your view. When you reach the back of your car, that is when the carjackers appear out of nowhere, jump into your car and take off…..They practically run you down as they speed off in your car. And guess what, ladies? I bet your purse is still in the car. So now the carjacker has your car, your home address, your money, and your keys. Your home and your whole identity are now compromised!

If you see a piece of paper stuck to your back window, just drive away. Remove the paper later. And be thankful that you read this e-mail. I hope you will forward this to friends and family, especially to women. A purse con-tains all kinds of personal information and identification documents, and you certainly do NOT want it to fall into the wrong hands. Regards a member

To the editor... Well I dunno, but the Wollopers must have been having a slow day. As a little while back (40 years) . Me present wife wanted summinck from the nearby shops, probably food. Anyhow she puts the little daugh-ter in the back child carrier seat of her new pushbike and rides off to the local shops down the hill and across the Main road. When she stopped, she then

heard a Motorbike pulling up along side of her and , yes it was a speed cop (Motor Cycle Police Officer). He then told her in a very stern voice that she had been speeding and could receive a fine. My wife then thought that she knew the speed cop and said . “Come on I know you, and I know that you are having me on. “ However he then got very annoyed, and was going to proceed with the ticket but gave her a

stern warning and the benefit of a let off. THIS TIME. The morale of this story is DONT BUY A TOP IF THE RANGE MALVERN STAR as they go too Flamin quick and fast !!!!!!!!! Regards Brew

Marque of the month

…… zeta A Fanatical enthusiast is Bob Collins, Needless to

say, such a quirky little car appeals to a limited

audience, but those people who love the Lightburn

love it with a passion. Bob and Maureen Collins

own a blue Lightburn Series 1 sedan (yes, there

actually was a Series 2. Bob bought the car from

his brother-in-law in the 70s. "New they were

cheaper than a Mini," chuckles Bob, "but they needed to be!" The car

has plenty of flaws, or character if you prefer, and Bob's- well aware

of them all. Since restoring the car years ago, he and Maureen have

probably travelled more Zeta miles than anybody in the world. "We took it to Kernewek Lowender on the Copper Coast when it was first

restored and it's been to every one since. There are a million stories about this car. We were parked next to an Aston Martin at one mo-

tor show and at the end of the day the Aston owner said to me, 'I paid $250,000 for this' car and everyone is walking past it to look at

your $100 car`!'

When I drove it to Mildura, I left home at 7.30am, and arrived in Renmark at 10.30am for a break — I needed it! I detoured through Paringa and arrived in Mildura at 2.30pm." Ian Wilson is another owner who loves Lightburns for what they are. He owns a restored Lightburn Sports, has previously restored a Series 1 sedan, and has another Series 2 sedan awaiting his attention. "Harold Lightburn was a pretty patriotic South Australian," recalls Ian. "He tried to source everything locally The Zeta underwent 10 years of development, but I think it might have been successful if it had come out sooner... Lightburn had a showroom on West Terrace and a track where intending buyers could take the cars for a test drive"I'd like to know who first started making jokes about the Zeta,", he comments, "because they destroyed it... As for the Ampol Trial, Ian has a theory that the Lightburn factory equipped a support truck with spare parts and rebuilt them each night. "When I see the video and see the car, I think they probably would have had to rebuild them every night as I can't see them being strong enough to last.- It's a similar story with the claim that the Zeta had undergone one million miles of testing. "A million miles takes a long time to come around," he muses, "especially at 40 mph!"

Member Bob Collins in his beloved Zeta ( speeding ticket

proudly displayed in the rear window )

ZETA HISTORY Adelaide's Lightburn Zeta mini car was designed as a cheap alternative second car, but lack of oomph meant it daren't be driven up-hill As a city, IT HAS a proud reputation in automotive production with both Holden and Chrysler cars. But back in the 1960s, there was also, a third car, Australia's "micro car", manufactured by – Lightburn Industries, which, had, until 1963, manufactured tools, cement mixers, washing machines and fibreglass boats. Harold Lightburn, the company's owner and founder, was convinced that many Australians would like the convenience of a second car, but just couldn't afford such a luxury. To get things started, he bought the rights to a British mini car; and then created a fibreglass Station Sedan body shell. Lightburn called it a "runabout". To those who knew him, Harold was an extremely ambitious man with a grand vision. His father had started his own small backyard factory making hand-operated concrete mixers, wheel barrows and garden tools, and young Harold grew up in this manufacturing environ-ment

On leaving school, he-worked for a while in a factory making hydraulic jacks but, inspired by his father's achievements, eventually left to start his own business, the Lightburn Company at Camden Park. By the early Sixties, he was employing almost 500 people, but he dreamt of something much bigger – an Adelaide manufacturing business that would one day employ thousands and make cars, helicop-ters and submarines.

The Lightburn Zeta was his first step. It was small, relatively cheap at £595, and lightweight. The Zeta strategy was for a simple and

cost effective engineering design something so easy that a whitegoods manufacturer would be able to produce it in large numbers. For the

motorist, it would offer low-maintenance cost and be cheap to run. While the car achieved those goals, unfortunately also produced

underwhelming performance. The basic configuration was a front-wheel-drive car, powered by a two-stroke engine, with gearbox, clutch,

and differential mounted beneath the engine. It had independent suspension all round and the two-door body was made of glass-fibre

reinforced plastic, with windows of Perspex and steel doors. It all should have added up to a pretty good and cheap little car but the princi-

pal problem was the Zeta's lack of power. While the company's advertising claimed a top speed of 60mph, only a brave few ever man-

aged to get the car up to 50. Acceleration was pitiful. The two-stroke's lack of any real muscle made even a minor uphill slope a real

test, while steep hills were completely out of the question. According to reports from those who owned one, provided you were on level

ground, kept up the revs and were quick with the gear changes, you would be able to keep the Zeta moving at a reasonable pace.

Around the city, the car's length, good turning circle and ease of parking made it useful, but again with the overall lack of engine perfor-

mance, it suddenly lost any advantage that it might have gained. The most confusing thing however was the gearbox. It was four-

speed forward with no reverse. To travel in reverse, the engine had to be switched off and restarted "backwards". which then provid-

ed four reverse gears.

The petrol gauge on the dashboard was a graduated glass tube section connected directly to the plastic petrol pipe feeding the engine. As a Wheels magazine road test put it, "it read anywhere from full to empty depending on gradient, throttle and probably Greenwich Mean Time". There was a Zeta two-door sedan, the Deluxe model, a Utility and the Zeta Sports (with no doors at all).

With all its weirdness of design and lack of any real engine power, the vehicle's eventual success, or lack thereof, was also thwarted by some disastrous timing. It was released on to the market at around the same time as the Morns Mini, which was only £60 more ex-pensive and became something of a cult car of the era. The final sales figures vary but It is thought only 363 bodies were ever pro-duced at the factory, and 283 completed cars made it to the showroom floor and were sold from 1963-66. According to a sign in the Na-tional Motor Museum in Birdwood, only 48 of the sports model were made. The Utility was the rarest of the Zeta models with only eight produced.

Our oldest Member………………..Vincent Vivian BARRY

Better known to most as “Vinny”. Vinny was born at the Balaklava hospital 18/10/1923 at high noon, and weighed in at 11 pounds, he tells me that his Mum,( like him-self ) was not very big and never let him forget “that EVENT”. He was the 3rd child in a line of 7 and went to school until grade 6 at the Mt.Templeton primary school, this is a little north of Balaklava.

He says he was a little tubby fella’ and the kids nick- named him “FATTY- ARBUCKLE”, He didn’t like this, so he used to run the 3 and a half miles to and from school, this eventually got his weight down to the small framed and light weight he is today. His family had a 60 acre farm in the area, not much produced from it, but he believes it helped them survive the depression of the 1930’s, as they had eggs, milk, meat etc. Various jobs as a teenager and when 18, he bought a Sunbeam 500 motorbike from Bill the butcher in Murray st. Gawler. This bike cost 50 pounds and Bill wouldn’t take any less, it also had a side-car which Vinny wasn’t too keen on. Bill convinced him if he rode it carefully, especially negotiating left turns no problems..hahaha Heading north in Murray st south, he had to turn left at the soldier’s monument, he tried this, but ended up hitting the wall of a building on the wrong side of the street, off came the side-car.

His first car was a T model with a Dickie seat, bought from a small goods maker in Gawler this also cost him 50 pounds.

His first new car was a 1958 FC Holden. He got married on August the 9th 1947 in the Gawler West Methodist Church to Inesz, (who is deceased). Heather was born in 1954.

He was involved in real estate for many years, this eventually al-lowed him to build up quite a property portfolio and he has been able to wheel and deal and live quite well from these investments. He has a passion for restoring cars and his 1926 Chrysler 60 was Grand-Parents car. He also has a 1925 Chrysler which was a buck-board when he bought it, originally it was a rare model with a dickie seat, he restored both cars back to excellent condition. He has done all the metal and woodwork, also the mechanics. He has a 1958 Vauxhall Velox. He has had a very interesting and diverse life, but unfortunate-ly, he is not

very mobile now and being visually impaired can’t work on his beloved cars. BUT, every month he goes to Gawler ( now named Playford ) Country Music with a group of visually impaired people and has a ball. Until recently he was up for nearly every dance.

He has so many stories to tell and this is just a very con-densed version of his life.

I feel very privileged to have spent a few hours with Vinny, recording a small bit of his life. Cheers Ron Stephens

A Little Poem from a member

I have a little Sat-Nav It sits there in my car A Sat-Nav is a driver's friend It tells you where you are

I have a little Sat-Nav I've had it all my life It's better than the normal ones My Sat-Nav is my wife

It gives me full instructions Especially how to drive "It's thirty miles an hour", it says "You're doing thirty five"

It tells me when to stop and start And when to use the brake And tells me that it's never ever Safe to overtake

It tells me when a light is red And when it goes to green It seems to know instinctively Just when to intervene

It lists the vehicles

just in front And all those to the rear And taking this into account It specifies my gear.

I'm sure no other driver Has so helpful a device For when we leave and lock the car It still gives its advice

It fills me up with counseling Each journey's pretty fraught So why don't I exchange it And get a quieter sort?

Ah well, you see, it cleans the house, Makes sure I'm properly fed, It washes all my shirts and things And - keeps me warm in bed!

Despite all these ad-vantages And my tendency to scoff, I do wish that once in a while I could turn the fuckin' thing off.

As advertised, we are hosting Old Car Day again this year at Bethany on Friday 1st Sep-tember.

One of our requirements under our risk management submission to Barossa Coun-

cil is that we have a first aid strategy in place. To achieve this we need to have qualified first aid officers readily available.

So far we have had 12 Old Car Days without a medical event, but we do need to be pre-pared.

If you intend to attend and have first aid qualifications can you please let me know either by return email or by phone on 8529 2504

Membership Report for June-July 2017 Our Numbers are now Joint 183 Single 106 Members 482…Memberships.294…. Juniors 22 Mike Osborne recently had a stent fitted into an artery which was 95% blocked and is going very well, taking it easy for a while though. Keep on keepin’ on Mike. Barbara and I were at Gawler country music,it is now called Playford and our oldest member Vinny Barry, who has been a club member for about 30 years, attends also with a visually impaired group. He was quite interested when I told him that he was the oldest member, but, we now have gone from our youngest member Emmeline at around 2 years of age to Amelia Buck who is about 4-5 months old. He sends his best wishes to those members who may remember him…He is 93 and very frail but will not miss that show every month and until a small number of months ago would dance. Our numbers are down but we have a few joining at the end of June. Cheers Ron Stephens Membership Secretary….GVV & CVC

Membership Report for July-August 2017 Numbers are now Joint 187, Single 108, Members 482…Memberships.295... Juniors 22

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the work of our outgoing committee people, I have enjoyed working with them. I need to make special mention of the ongoing help from our Treasurer David Kernich, who has done an outstanding job for this club and anytime I needed computer assistance, he made himself available and his wife Fran supplied me with lunch. I also need to make mention of our E-torque man Alvin, his computer help has been invaluable, particularly at membership renewal time and also, a lunch from his wife Sylvia. Our outgoing events person Bruce, well assisted by wife Anne , has done a super job of organising members to run events , and putting on very interesting runs himself. Strangely though, our attendances for meetings and runs, have been down from 2015-2016, at around 900 attendances. This number of attendances by a couple though is amazing…109 by Bruce and Anne Williams, you may ask why an odd number, Bruce went by himself on one occasion. We need new members and now with the relaxation of regula-tions hopefully, our numbers are going to grow. Cheers Ron Stephens Membership Secretary….GVV & CVC

Registration and use of Historic Vehicles under The Log Book System

Preamble The system of historic registration of qualifying vehicles in S.A. is an excellent system that promotes the use of Historic Vehicles by Club Members in the enjoyment of their hobby. As, Historic Registration is only available to members of a recognized Club then it is the expectation of the Club that Members will use a small portion of the logged outings to participate in some Club Activities using their Historic Registered Vehicles.

The intent of this trophy is to encourage members to finish a project

that has been lying idle for some time.

Hands on restoration is preferred to cheque book restoration

1 It is to be a perpetual trophy. Starting from July 1st each year and closing June 30th 2017

2 The outgoing committee at the time decides who is to receive the trophy ( in the case of a

tie or dispute the clubs Restoration Coordinator will have final say.)

3 To be presented each year at the GVVCVC Annual Dinner

……………….Here’s how it works

a/ The committee/ Restoration Coordinator will hold a Register of members vehicles ( cars ,

motorbikes )being restored that may be finished in the near future, Start date of restoration is irrelevant.

b/ Members will need to produce some record of work carried out :e.g. photographs as purchased,

work in progress, receipts , Diary etc.

& take it on one official club run before June 30, 2017
