The Gatsby Summer Afternoon The Gatsby Summer Afternoon is like stepping into a classic movie, traveling back to a time filled with glamor and charm. Thank you for your support in making living history possible! To preserve this fragile illusion of the 1920s & 30s, we ask that EVERY guest dress appropriately. Bring your own picnic, elaborate or simple, and step back to a more elegant era.

We do have a dress code for this event and it will be strictly enforced at the front gate. Please, NO jeans, shorts, tee-shirts, polo shirts, tennis shoes or flip flops. Modern casual clothes break the magic spell of “The Gatsby”. Instead...

DRESS UP VINTAGE STYLEGentlemen: Wear your favorite summer suit or blazer and tie, top with a straw boater or Panama. Ladies: Think elegant garden party, light summer colors, straight-cut 20s or curvy 30s day wear in light linen or chiffon (but no formal beaded evening wear, no feather boas, please). PICNIC IN STYLEPicnics can be intimate or elaborate affairs. For a simple picnic: bring sandwiches wrapped in wax paper, fruit and dessert in a basket. Serve beverages in metal cups, glass bottles, a Thermos or flask. Bring a blanket for seating on the lawn. Modern plastic picnic coolers and other gear should be avoided or just covered with a tablecloth. For a fancy picnic: include china, Depression glass, silver champagne buckets, flatware and flowers. Bring vintage style folding tables and chairs with your Early Entry Pass or reserve a table with umbrella and linens on the order form.

FOR THE MOST COMPLETE INTRODUCTION TO GATSBYPlan to attend the "Getting Ready For Gatsby" Lecture, a fashion presentation by the Art Deco Society of California, plus an opportunity to shop for selected Gatsby Fashion from some local Vintage Dealers. Thursday, August 22 at the Hotel Rex, 562 Sutter Street in San Francisco. Cocktails 6:30, Lecture 7:30, Shopping to follow. Admission is $10 for Members, $15 for Non-Members.

PARKINGParking is provided in two lots designated by Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estates. Please do not park in the neighborhood. Volunteers will direct you to the lot and provide you with a free parking pass upon arrival. If you would like to drop off your picnic basket at the top of the hill by the front gates, please check with the volunteers. Drive slowly and remember vintage autos always have the right-of-way!

ENTRANCEEntry and picnic drop-off–pick-up point is directly outside the front gate. After presenting your ticket, you may stroll in to the picnic grounds for the true vintage experience! Vintage auto shuttles will be available on a limited basis from 1PM to 2PM only, with preference for those with mobility problems. Please, no large items in vintage auto taxi–shuttles and only two carry-on items per person.

GOOD STEWARDSHIPGood stewardship of the Dunsmuir-Hellman property and the vintage autos will enable us to enjoy the Gatsby in this perfect setting for many years to come. Please refrain from touching the vintage cars, and be sure to pick up all trash including stray bottle caps and corks; they will damage the lawn maintenance equipment.

NO PETS PLEASE PLEASE: NO pets, NO Smoking (we will be fined), NO driving on the lawn. DO drive 5 miles per hour one direction please. DO make sure everyone in your party is in proper “Gatsby Attire”.
