The Writing’s On The Wall

Wallpaper has been way off the trend radar for

years. But now it is making a comeback—and

it’s nothing like what Grandma put on her

walls this time around. We asked a few of the

most innovative companies in the field what is

driving the return to papering walls.

“Wallpaper is back because of fashion!” Gina

Shaw, VP of Product Development for York

Wallcoverings told us. “Consumers see all the

great color, design and texture in apparel. It

inspires them to decorate the home in a

similar fashion. They are tired of plain painted

walls.”

Graham & Brown cited ease of use as a

primary driver in the return of wallpaper. It is

easier than ever to hang, and even comes with

user-friendly pre-pasted options. It is also

washable. Just as importantly, wallpaper is now

much easier to remove, which is especially

important when consumers are changing their

décor more frequently than in the past.

Clearly, some of the biggest objections to

decorating with wallpaper have been

eliminated.

Another key factor, says Gina Shaw of York:

“Anyone can afford wallpaper. There are all

levels of price points available.”

Meanwhile, Avery Thatcher from Juju Papers

had a different perspective. “The comeback of

wallpaper is being driven by the fact that the

two major current forms of wallpaper

production are both exceedingly popular right

now. Hand-printed and digital. “

Thatcher believes that the current obsession

with old-fashioned, handmade things is

already obvious in diverse categories, from

prohibition-era cocktails and wood-fired ovens

to handlebar mustaches and crating using

weaving and knitting techniques. Each

example bears the mark of being handcrafted—

something that is increasingly sought after in

today’s era of cell-phone and big-screen

lifestyles. Hand-printed wallpaper fits nicely

into this category. Juju Papers prints

everything by hand, using all environmentally

friend products (another current trend).

“On the flip side,” says Thatcher, “digital

printing is revolutionizing the way wallpaper

can follow trends by creating a product that is

intended only for one application or one

season. Digital-wallpaper designers can

produce a design and bypass all of the

investment and warehousing involved with the

handmade. They are also not limited by

expense related to color. Digital wallpapers can

follow trends in a way never been seen before.”

York’s Gina Shaw agrees that there are many

more fashionable and eclectic choices available

today than there were in the past. This

includes not only new and exciting designs,

but also many great choices for texture, like

grasscloth, cork, mica and other natural

materials.

“Wallpaper is the one purchase that can

change an entire room dramatically and

quickly without changing your furniture and

décor,” Gina went on to say. And, as Lindsay

Brand of Graham & Brown pointed out, “It

can add the look of metal, wood or brick

without actually using those materials.”

Wallpaper? What If She and He Disagree?

Q: I really love jazzy wallpaper! The problem is,

I'm married to an architect who thinks all

surfaces should only be white, black or

(maybe) cement-gray. We have struggled over

this for so long I've run out of pro-wallpaper

arguments — unless you have a new insight.

A: It may be cliche, but something comes over

ordinary people when they become architects:

They turn quite serious, especially about

keeping the faith in certain "tasteful" colors

and patterns. That pretty much translates to

white, black, gray and, just maybe, geometric

patterns, definitely no flowers.

I may risk enraging the AIAs who will accuse

me of stereotyping but having once been

married to an architect, I know whereof I

speak. And that said, my best advice is to give

up the fight, at least in the "public" rooms of

your home. Save your wallpaper for your

personal habitat: your bath, dressing room,

home office — anywhere no one will see and

— heaven forbid! — mistake it for your architect

husband's taste.

This anti-wall-pattern thing has been going on

since before the turn of the 20th century,

when Victoriana raged and pattern-on-pattern-

on-pattern was in vogue. The reaction was

extreme, giving birth to the International

School of Less-Is-More, and wallpaper has

been rather a wallflower ever since.

That's a shame. Personally, I love the fun and

freshness of patterned walls. Who could resist

the riot of stylish flowers that run rampant on

this wall! "Parisian Poppies" is from Stacy

Garcia (stacygarcia.com), a designer not known

for introverted patterns and colors.

Here, the wallpaper adds frisson, and

fast-forwards what is essentially a traditional

room, with its classic furniture and handsome

architectural setting.

Imagine how sober-sided the room would look

without that wonderful, improbable vertical

garden!

You’ve heard of Community Supported

Agriculture (CSA) well this is Community

Supported Design.

The design team’s objective was to transform

the dressing rooms at the 12th Street boutique

into beautiful, unique spaces that would help

the woman using it to see herself as someone

unique and beautiful.

This project collected some of the most

talented, dedicated, and kind people from

Moore’s Continuing Education director who

allowed me to explore this project with the

assistance of the students to the painter who

drove through the night from Maine on his

last night of vacation to be on site for Day 1 of

the installation to the wallpaper hanger who

rearranged his schedule with three days notice

to the contractor and electrician who swooped

in minutes before the Media Day event to

repair a sconce.

Early in my career I learned the value of

surrounding myself with good people, and this

project gave me the opportunity to highlight

industry professionals who are incredible at

their work, are trustworthy, generous, and

make it all look easy. I also had the pleasure

of meeting new professionals like the talented

interior designer, Tonya Comer, and

phenomenal leader, Barbara Silzle.
