Tenth Sunday after Pentecost August 13, 2017

8:30 am & 10:00 am

Bible Verse of the Month: “Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you.”

Psalm 67:3 (NRSV)

Gathering

Prelude Sonata in E Flat Major Franz Joseph Haydn

I. Allegro

Please use the prelude as a quiet time to prepare yourself for worship.

Welcome

You are invited to stand.

Confession and Forgiveness

Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, full of compassion and mercy, abounding in steadfast love. Amen.

Trusting God’s promise of forgiveness, let us confess our sin against God and one another.

Eternal God our creator, in you we live and move and have our being. Look upon us, your children, the work of your hands. Forgive us all our offenses, and cleanse us from proud thoughts and empty desires. By your grace draw us near to you, our refuge and our strength; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit given to us. In the mercy of almighty God, Christ died for us while we still were sinners; and for his sake, God + forgives you all your sins. Amen.

You are invited to stand and face the processional cross.

Gathering Hymn Eternal Father, Strong to Save Hymn #766

Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Prayer of the Day O God our defender, storms rage around and within us and cause us to be afraid. Rescue your people from despair, deliver your sons and daughters from fear, and preserve us in the faith of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Please be seated.

Word First Lesson 1 Kings 19:9-18 Holy Bible pg. 362 (OT)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Second Lesson Romans 10:5-10 Holy Bible pg. 167 (NT)

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

You are invited to stand.

Gospel Acclamation

The Holy Gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord.

Gospel Matthew 14:22-33 Holy Bible pg. 16 (NT)

The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

Sermon

Hymn of the Day We Walk by Faith Hymn #635

Renewal of Wedding Vows (8:30 am)

Bruce & Bev Bredbeck

Peace (8:30 am)

The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you.

After sharing the Peace, please be seated.

SECOND LESSON Romans 10:5-10

A right relationship with God is not something we achieve by heroic

efforts. It is a gift received in the

proclamation whose content is Jesus Christ. This proclaimed word

creates our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Hence Christian proclamation is an

indispensable component of God’s

saving actions.

GOSPEL Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew’s gospel

typically portrays Jesus’ disciples as people of “little faith” who fail

despite their best intentions. In this story,

Matthew shows how Jesus comes to the

disciples when they are in trouble and sustains

them in their time of fear and doubt.

FIRST LESSON 1 Kings 19:9-18

On Mount Horeb, where God had appeared to

Moses with typical signs of God’s presence—

earthquake, wind, and fire—Elijah now

experienced God in “sheer silence.” God

assured Elijah that he is not the only faithful

believer. Seven thousand Israelites are still loyal. God instructed Elijah to anoint two men as kings and to anoint Elisha as

his own successor.

Response: Lord in your mercy…Hear our prayer.

Meal

Welcome to the Lord’s Table

The Great Thanksgiving

Preface

It is indeed right, our duty and our joy...

...we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

IN BAPTISM we are received into the

family of God, that is, the Church. In baptism Orion Hans will be washed into

Christ and clothed with Righteousness. As people

of God we are called to join all God’s people for

the sake of sharing God’s love and grace in the

world.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING is a meal prayer.

Eucharist is the Greek word for thanksgiving.

Before we come forward to eat as a

congregation and family of God, we give

thanks to God.

THE PREFACE is a prayer which

reminds us that, in Christ, we are united

with all the Saints who have gone before us. We are a part of the

Communion of Saints through all time and

space.

Sanctus

Words of Institution ...For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the mystery of our faith. Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Please be seated.

Those who are not receiving communion are invited to receive a blessing. Note that the communion station at the center has gluten-free bread and alcohol-free wine.

RENEWAL FOR GROWTH UPDATE—WE’RE OVER HALFWAY THERE!

Here’s a brief update on the Renewal for Growth Campaign:

Phase 1 of the campaign resulted in our beautiful chapel Phase 2 consists of several projects needed to upgrade our facility, including:

Replacement of the organ console Cleaning of the organ pipes Upgrade and refurbish the fellowship hall Refurbishment of the sanctuary Critical maintenance needs

The church council set a goal of raising $1.6 million to complete these projects and we’re over halfway to that goal, thanks to commitments from 53 giving units within the congregation.

From these commitments, we’ve received $330,000 in cash, allowing us to already begin work on several of the projects:

West parking lot drainage project - complete New organ console ordered and to be installed - September Organ pipes cleaned - September Architect hired for design of refurbished Fellowship Hall - July

We will reach our goal, but we need your help to do so! Commitments can be made over a four-year period.

Beginning, Sunday, September 17, you’ll have an opportunity to make a commitment. Over the summer, you’ll receive more information about the campaign and we ask that you prayerfully consider your participation.

Celebration of Holy Baptism

L: We gather at these living waters. Throughout history, God’s saving action toward God’s people has taken place through water. Let us pray: Most Holy God, you created the seas, rivers, and lakes; you saved Noah and his family from the floods; you led the Israelites through the Red Sea and quenched their thirst with water flowing from a rock. Through the waters of the Jordan River, you proclaimed Jesus your own beloved son and so through these waters of baptism, you proclaim that we, too, are your own beloved children, now and forever. Amen. L: Parents, do you wish Orion Hans to be baptized into the promises of God? R: I do. We make promises and assume responsibilities at baptism. God promises us unconditional love and life forever, and we know that our journey of faith encompasses certain promises so that our lives reflect this love. Parents, do you promise to: live with your child among God’s faithful people, bring him to the Lord’s table, teach him the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, place the holy scriptures in his hands to nurture his faith and prayer life, so that he may know and trust God, encourage him to proclaim Christ in his life, care for others, the creation that God made, and work for justice and peace? R: I do. L: Parents, sponsors and people of God, do you promise to support and pray for Orion Hans in his new life in Christ? C: We do. Together we confess our faith in God, who creates, redeems and sustains us. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen Baptism: Orion Hans, Child of God, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayer: Sustain Orion Hans with the gift of your Holy Spirit: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of coun-sel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence, both now and forever. Amen. Blessing: Orion Hans, Child of God, you have been sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ forever. Amen. L: Let your light so shine before others that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven. Let us welcome our new brother in Christ! C: We welcome you! We promise to walk together on our journey of faith, to participate in God’s mission of love and reconciliation for all of creation and to praise God with our whole lives. We are One in Christ! Amen! L: The peace of the Lord be with you always. C: And also with you. After sharing the Peace, please be seated.
