I know we’ve been saying this for the last four issues now but Winter looks to have finally, maybe, possibly, packed it in for good. If you’re currently dusting off snow from this copy, or reading it huddled around a flaming oil drum, then PROFUSE apologies as it’s clearly us who keep jinxing it. On the off chance that you’re reclining on a sun lounger, gesturing at the pool boy to bring you another strawberry daiquiri, we’ve lined up a host of cultural must-dos for you to partake instead. They’re all contained within, along with all the usual news and views you’re now emotionally dependant on to see you through the fortnight. It’s a corker this issue, so much like the Leaning Tower of Pisa would say to Big Ben, if you’ve got the time, we’ve got the inclination.

For the uninitiated, what exactly does a curator do? A curator, or keeper, looks after all that stuff in museum and gallery collections and finds ways to display it for you all to see!

When deciding on what collections and exhibitions are suitable for the galleries, what qualities do you usually consider? Is it any good?! But seriously, is it relevant to the audience, does it add to the narrative, will we show it, is it in decent condition?

Do you think curating art in NE1 differs from anywhere else? Only in that, of course, it’s more fun because Newcastle is such a great place to live. People want to know about the place they live in.

The Northern Spirit exhibition at The Laing celebrates 300 years of NE art. What sort of things are included in that? Northern Spirit captures the artistic spirit of the region, highlights are paintings by Newcastle artists Ralph Hedley and John Martin.

In your time working in this role, what have been your personal highlights? The best bits have been getting paintings out of stores and getting them on the wall. It’s the best job in the world. Well, pretty much...

What sort of thing can art lovers in NE1 expect to see in the future? Art lovers in NE1 can look forward to Kanye West in Divine Bodies at the Laing and shouldn’t miss Ed Ruscha

wonderful performances in the bright of the afternoon as well, and has created an intimate jazz lounge in the Sage just for the occasion. This will play host to Jazz From The North on the Saturday and the Sunday, with bands from the North of England, Scotland and even the Finnish Verneri Pohjola Trio and Oddarrang, all performing. It's not all about trombones and saxophones of course, as seminal French guitarist Bireli Lagrene makes an all-too-rare appearance outside London.BBC Radio 3 are even putting in an appearance, in the unmistakable shape

of Alyn Shipton. A regular to the event itself having been involved many times in the past, Shipton will be undertaking an exploration of the relationship between jazz and poetry,

notably the work of Philip Larkin and W.B.Yeats, in

an event being dubbed Jazz Words. Ever the obliging disk jockey though, Alyn will also present a live edition of Radio 3’s Jazz Record Requests from the

festival. Bringing the festivities to a

fitting crescendo on the Sunday, the very concourse

of the Sage is filled to the rafters with the unmistakeable sound of over 100 saxophone players partaking in the North East’s own version of

Saxophone Massive. It's essentially the same principle as the Harlem Shake, but instead of dancing like a Cheshire cat that's been engulfed in flames, you play a wind instrument instead. Got it?Just when you'll think you've had enough of all the jazz-based delight, soul legend Ruby Turner will drag you back into Hall One for an evening of on-your-feet whooping and I-don't-even-care-who's-watching hollering before The Brand New Heavies, who you definitely remember for Midnight At The Oasis, give the whole event the most fitting of funk culminations.Add to all this the fact that there'll be workshops for aspiring musicians, free music kicking about the venue for the entire weekend and Hoochie Coochie-hosted after-parties that run on until the wee hours, and we've got one of the highlights of the musical calendar right on our own doorstep.

So then, it's with much excitement that we can take you through the various events that will be making up this year's Gateshead International Jazz Festival. Now in its ninth year, it's officially grown to become the largest UK festival held under one roof. And what a roof it is as well, with the Sage playing host to all the festivities from Friday 5th to Sunday 7th April. While the event always attracts jazz fans from near and far, it doesn't matter whether or not you know your boogie woogie from your bossa nova. As well as illustrious acts The Brand New Heavies, Ruby Turner and Soweto Kinch, the festivities are kicked off on Friday by the National Youth Jazz Orchestra with their first ever visit to the venue. Now firmly established as part of the UK jazz scene they'll be joined on the evening

Also that evening, Hall Two see the aforementioned genre-busting Soweto Kinch perform material from his new double album The Legend Of Mike Smith.Saturday night has a far more regional flavour to it though, as the festival draws on the North as one of its key themes. In Hall One, we'll be treated to two jazz suites actually inspired by the North East itself as Newcastle jazz musician and composer Ian Carr gives the region its first ever performance of Northumbrian Sketches, and local lad

Tim Garland unveils his Songs To The North Sky. Both will be performed by Northern Sinfonia orchestra of The Sage Gateshead, with jazz soloists Tim

Whitehead and Henry Lowthe, as well as Lighthouse and

the award-winning pianist Gwilym Simcock. That's not the only regional connection though, as German jazz singer Jens Thomas turns the

music of AC/DC into his own special

blend of late-night chamber jazz. No, really.

MINI SERIES IN FOOD & NUTRITION

The ‘healthy’ message is pretty much shoved down our throats these days, and since the Chancellor has put a tax or price hike on pretty much everything except fresh fruit and veg, perhaps it’s time we started listening – for our wallets’ sake, if not our health! So, why not join Life Science Centre’s clever bods to discover more about food and nutrition. Over a six week course, beginning on Tuesday 16th April, discover how to make sense of all the contradictory and confusing information that surrounds how we buy and consume food. Learn what constitutes a healthy diet, what food labels mean and what part modern science plays in making our food

safe. The course is ideal for curious adults and students considering careers or further study in food and nutrition and will explore a wide range of topics and subjects, from

the flavours and components of beer and chocolate

(yep, that probably means tasting!) to the effects of a diet on mental and physical performance. There’s the option of a

practical lesson on Saturday 11th May, by

which we can only assume means you get to eat

lots of nice healthy grub. For a mere £45 for the entire course, it’s a bargain that might just make you healthier!

We all know the story – the evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart! Jekyll & Hyde has a wonderful musical score from the award winning composer Frank Wildhorn and includes the hit songs This Is The Moment, Someone Like You and In His Eyes. The West End Operatic Society’s production of the classic play comes to the Theatre Royal on Monday 8th until Saturday 13th April, and with 2 for 1 tickets on selected performances (Mon/Tues/Weds 7pm and Thurs 2pm & 7pm) you’d be crazy not to go!

Plans are underway to revamp to Newcastle’s Central Station, with £20m going into updating the iconic Victorian station and its environs. Following NE1’s success in securing nearly £5m from the Regional Growth Fund, collaboration between the Council, Network Rail, East Coast and NE1 will see the Grade 1 Listed building benefit from a hugely improved interior as well as a new entrance, taxi rank and enhanced public realm and traffic flow around the whole area. East Coast and Network Rail are leading on the development inside the station, while NE1 and Newcastle City Council will lead on the outside development, supported by the RGF funding. The project will be finished by May 2014.

RAPUNZEL – EASTER PANTO

In an age where you can readily purchase dry shampoo and having seasonal veg all year round doesn't impress anyone, there should be no head scratching at all over the concept of a pantomime in the Spring. Especially not one this good. From the same team behind last year’s sell-out Easter tour of The Wizard of Oz, Enchanted Entertainment present another family friendly, action-packed and hilarious Easter panto about Rapunzel, the girl with the magical, golden hair on Thursday 4th and Friday 5th April at Mill Volvo Tyne Theatre. This wonderful, all new, professional production of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy-tale boasts an all-star cast, with Jenny Jones of CITV and Cartoonio's Hi-5 fame, the star of Andrew Lloyd-Webber's Superstar show Jon Moses and Blue Peter Legend Peter Duncan all on the bill, as well as a host of other entertainers from CBBC and CBeebies.Whether you're young or ol... ‘not young’, there's plenty of delights to be had in the classic hair-raising (sorry) tale, with great songs, amazing dance routines and plenty of laughter for all the family. Tickets are priced at £18/16, and there's a family ticket available for £65. Plus, you don't even have to wade through hordes of Christmas shoppers on your way out! How's that for fairytale.

THE STAND... TICkLING OUR FUNNY BONES

SINCE 2011

When The Stand opened in Newcastle at the end of 2011 many people told us that our approach to comedy might struggle in a city known for large groups of drunken stag and hens, where the comedian is seen as being put there to be heckled and ridiculed. We thought ‘if we build it, they will come’ and set about creating the best environment possible for live comedy, that both comedians and audiences will appreciate. This seems to be working as we’re selling out shows and being praised by the likes of Sarah Millican, Chris Ramsey, John Bishop and Phill Jupitus. Our Wednesday Red Raw beginners’ night has become a mecca for those starting out in stand-up, and is only two quid. We’ve also got regular night from local favourites Gavin Webster, Simon Donald, Steffen Peddie, The Suggestibles and our new monthly kids show has gone down a treat.Never been before? Go to www.thestand.co.uk/free and try us for FREE. Seriously, FREE.

Comedians and staff from The Stand will be exclusively contributing a regular column to NE1 every fortnight.

Now in its fourth year, the NE1 Urban Games comes to the heart of the city this August, bringing high octane BMX, skateboarding, parkour (free running), trial mountain bikes and street and breakdance.Last year’s event enticed 7,000 people over a rain swept weekend, and was described by The Observer as one of the top three UK summer Urban Festivals. This year, with NE1 backing the Solar Learning delivered event, the ambition is to get over 15,000 people attending by adding more events and more chances to see some of the top sportsmen and women in their respective fields.Running on Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th August, one of the big coups for the festival is securing a round from the Bike Trial Federation UK National Championships - the first ever city-based round in the federation’s history.Regional talent will have their chance to compete for medals too, able to show off in front of the pros as well as get rewarded with a ceremony and the adulation of being an NE1 Urban Games champion.
