SOME TIPS:
1.Go through previous year gate papers and solve all the
questions.. This is very important..
There is a website http://www.unitoperation.com/, it contains
question papers from 1990 onwards.. this site is very useful. The
site also contains subject-wise compilation of gate questions.
2.Chemical engineering questions and answers by o.p. gupta is a
very good book.. It contains lot of objective questions..
3.Study the subject properly before you solve the gate papers. I
have given a detailed description of the topics to be studied in
each subject in the next pages.
4.When you study a subject, solve problems simultaneously.

1.HEAT TRANSFER(8-10 marks)
Books : Introduction toHeat Transfer6th Ed -Incroperaand Dewittor Heat transfer ,cengel.
Topics :
Incropera: chapter 2 ( very imp: heat diffusion equation)Chapter 3
Chapter 5 ( upto spatial effects)
Chapter 6 to 13
The theory is almost the same in incropera and cengel . Refer any of the
books.
2.MASS TRANSFER (8-10 marks)
Books:
Principles of mass transfer and separation process-Binay k dutta
Mass transfer operations- treybal
Topics:
Binay k dutta:
chapters 2,3,4, 11(upto 11.6)
Very important : Diffusion through variable area, theories of mass
transfer, inter-phase mass transfer, drying rate curve
TRY THE UNSOLVED QUESTIONS AT THE END OF EVERY
CHAPTER.
Treybal:
Chapters 7, 8, 9 [humidification( upto recirculating liquid gas cooling),
absorption, distillation]

For problems on the above chapters , refer binay k dutta and previous
year papers. Problems in treybal are very tough. But the theory is really
good!
Extraction: only simple mass balance questions are asked from this.. Just
solve the questions from previous gate papers.

THERMODYNAMICS(8-10 MARKS)
Books:Thermodynamicsan engineering approach, Cengel
Intro to chemical engineering Thermodynamics- Van-nesssmith
Topics:
Cengelchapters 2 to 7
All the topics are important. Try the questions at the back.Van-ness : Chapter 6 (6.1, 6.4), chapter 10( henrys law, 10.5,)
Chapter 11(all topics)
These 3 chapters are very difficult to understand and memorize.. I have
written down the important equations from these chapters. I will give it to
Krishnasaga.

CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING( >10 marks)
Books-Levenspiel, Fogler
Chemical reaction engg-1 (Gavhane)
Topics:
Levenspielchapters 1 to 12, 17,18(upto 18.5)

CRE,Gavhane contains lot of solved questions. The theory in the book Is
the same as that of levenspiel. I have a copy of the book. I will give it to
krishnasaga.

FLUID MECHANICS (8 marks)
Books:Fluid mechanics-cengel, unit operation-mcabe
1000 solved problems in fluid mechanics- k subramanya
Topics:
Cengel: chapters-2,3,4,5,8,11,14.
Some portions in these topics might not be necessary. If u have any
doubts, u can ask me.
Mcabe: chapter 7 ( very imp: flow through bed of solids, terminal
velocity, fluidization)
The book1000 solved problems in fluid mechanics- k subramanya
contains lot of solved questions . It is a very good book. Cengel alsocontains many questions. But this book is better. I have a copy of the
same.
6. MECHANICAL OPERATIONS( 2-4 marks)
Unit operations mcabe- chapters 28,29
Study filtration problems well.
7.
MATHEMATICS( 11-15 marks)Engg. Mathematics- grewal
Chapter 2 (all topics. Important: rank, eigen value etc)
Chapter 8( important:greens, stokes theorem)
Chapter 11,13,
Chapter 20 ( imp: analytic functions, residue theorem)
Chapter 21,26
Chapter 28,29( study only 28.2,28.3,29.12)

PROCESS CONTROL AND DYNAMICS (6 marks)
Books:PROCESS SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND CONTROL, Coughanowr
Process control and dynamics- Seborg
Topics
Chapter 1 to 20 -coughnawr
Seborg- chapter 6,13, 14,15,16.
Frequency response, bode diagram,stability, etc are very important.. these topicshave been explained well in seborg.

PROCESS CALCULATIONS( 4 MARKS)
Solving questions in previous gate papers is enough and more.. the
pattern of questions are always the same.
10.
PROCESS INSTRUMENTATION( 2 MARKS)
Just go through previous question papers.
11.
CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY( 7-8 MARKS)
Studying this subject is very difficult as the syllabus is very vast.. But the
weightage is almost the same as that of ht or mt. Make a chart of reactant,
products, catalysts, etc of important processes and study.. match the
following type questions are normally asked..
Also study polymers well..
To get an idea see previous papers.. go through the questions in o.p.guptaalso.
12.PROCESS DESIGN and ECONOMICS(4-6 MARKS)
I didnot study process design for gate.. i think u ppl will have a better
idea about this subject since u had attended vineesh sirs classes.. we
were taught by pawan kumar sir.. i have no idea about this subject
As far as economics is concerned , study break-even analysis properly..
