1MASSACHUSETTS SAMPLER.Sarah Fales Belcher, Foxborough, Norfolk County, 1827, silk on linen. Sets of alphabets,separated by rows of decorative stitches, over moral verse outlined in sawtooth border.Overflowing baskets of fruit and flowers flank a beehive labeled “Industry”. Signed withmaker’s name, the date, location and teacher “Under the Instruction of Miss M.A. Hall”,all enclosed by a stylized strawberry vine. Very slight imperfections. In a modern frame,18”h. 18 1/2”w.

The youngest child and only daughter of Ira Belcher (1778-1832) and Sally Fales (d.1843),Sarah was born February 4th, 1815. Ira’s family were among the first settlers of Foxborough, arriving in the early 18th century. Sarah married Henry L. Sweet (b.1810 in Foxborough) in May 1834. Henry was involved in Foxborough’s straw hat industry. Thetown records list the births of six children and the early deaths of two young daughters. In the 1870 census Sarah is head of the household residing with two of her grown children. Miss M.A. Hall could be the Mary Ann Hall who married George J. Smith in1840. Vining rose border. Signed with maker’s name and her age, 9 years. Minor imperfections. Framed, 22 1/2”h. 21”w.

A Sarah Ann Medary, daughter of Samuel Medary (1801-1864)and Eliza Scott(1810-1885) was born on August 30, 1826. It is unclear where she was born, butby 1830 the family was living in Franklin County, Ohio. Samuel Medary was awell-known newspaper editor and politician.

37UNUSUAL JACKSON PRESS.Kentucky, 1820-1840, walnut and poplar. Two-piececupboard, the upper section with blind doors concealing shelves, the lower section with four drawers, all resting on high, turned feet. Minor imperfections, retains period brasses. 82 1/4”h. 39 1/2”w. 19”d. Purchased in Kentucky prior to 1960.

The drawer configuration, particularly the two deepdrawers below, is atypical of so-called Jackson presses,which more commonly have two drawers over twodoors. The deep lower drawers may have originallyserved as bottle and/or sugar storage. See McPherson,“That Article of Household Furniture Peculiar to EarlierDays in the South: Sugar Chests in Middle Tennesseeand Central Kentucky, 1800-1835” (appeared in Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Winter1997), fig. 28, for a sideboard sugar chest that also incorporates a deep drawer. $2,000-$4,000

42FINE NEW YORK SAMPLER.Harriet Augusta Higgins, Brooklyn, Kings County, 1836, silk on linen. Moral verse over impressive basket overflowing with grapes and roses. Signed and dated. Bright colors. Veryslight imperfections. In an old gilt frame, 20 1/2”h. 21 1/2”w.

Harriet, the youngest child of Michael Dunning Higgins (c.1780-1857) and Betty Gregory(1784-1862) was born in Brooklyn in 1825. She married Elisha Sherwood (1812-1880), awell-to-do business man with whom she had four children. Harriet died in Brooklyn in 1870and is buried in Greenwood Cemetery. Research included with lot. See Skinner, November1, 2002, lot 475, for very similar basket and verse, also dated 1836 and signed New York. $2,500-$5,000

Mary was born May 15th, 1812, in Newburyport to EnochPlummer (1787-1831) and Mary Gordon (1776-1855), oneof six children. She married Stephen Bartlett in 1832. Theywere living in Charleston, Middlesex County, by the 1850census along with two children and an Irish servant girl. $300-$600

A genealogical search located a Rebecca Soule (alternatespelling), born in 1791 to Ebenezer Soule and Mercy Footeof Hillsdale, Columbia County. Several Soals families werelocated in New York in this time frame, none with a childnamed Rebeca. $275-$550

Mercy’s sampler shares characteristics with late 18th century Canterbury, New Hampshire, samplers: the dark outlines, tiered trees, rolling foreground and the distinctive center basket. Connecticut born William (1783-1871) and his wife, Eunice Coleman (1785-1842) had the first four children in their home state,the next four in Genesee County, New York and were living in Troy,Ohio when Cordelia, the last child, was born in 1831. Julia wastwelve when her youngest sister was born and could have attended anumber of schools in the surrounding counties where very similarvine borders were made. She married William Williamson and hertwo daughters were born in Troy. Research included with lot.

Although the few existing Kentucky samplers are less intricate, there is some evidence thatthis piece might have originated in Kentucky. The sampler has a history of being a Kentuckypiece and the backing has an early 20th century Kentucky frame store label. The surnameCracraft appears repeatedly in early Kentucky records, including a Mary born in 1799 inMason County. Several girls’ schools existed in the area including Mrs. Keats in WashingtonCounty, Loretto Academy in Mason County, and one in Lexington, established by an Englishwoman, Mrs. Beck, that offered fashionable fancy work and embroidery. $800-$1,200

The crowned “N” on the barrel and on the stock indicate thatthis shotgun was made for the House of Bonaparte. When sold by Hammer Galleries, the present gun was associatedwith Napoleon I, however given the date of manufacture(1823-1826), it seems more plausible that it was made forFranz, Napoleon’s son with his second wife, Maria Louise.Despite living his entire life in Austria, young Franz wascrowned emperor as Napoleon II in 1815, but his fictionalreign lasted a mere fifteen days. CONDITION REPORTS: Absentee bidders should call for an updated condition report. This report supersedes the catalog description. Our staff will take a list of the items youwould like examined and give you a time to call back for a detailed report. Photographs are also available for a nominal fee.

ABSENTEE BIDS: Garth’s Auctions, Inc. accepts absentee bids including internet bids. These bids are given to an experienced bidder to execute competitively. All absenteeitems are purchased as inexpensively as possible. Although our absentee bidding system is 100% honest, it is not foolproof and Garth’s Auctions, Inc. isnot responsible for failing to execute any absentee bids. A $50.00 minimum bid is required on all lots. Absentee bids must be submitted in (a minimumof) $5.00 increments. Increments less than $5.00 will not be observed. Not many people can declare they held a job for nearly five decades, but the family ofrenowned Kennedy photographer, the late Robert Davidoff, can say with pride that Davidoffwas the photographer “in residence” for the Kennedy family in Palm Beach for almost 50years. Davidoff’s family waited until four years after his death to release a book, The KennedyFamily Album, in September 2008. Now, Babe Davidoff, widow of the photographer, haschosen, for the sale of the original photography used to create the book plus additional images not included in the publication and heretofore unseen by the general public, an auction house similarly dedicated to its own customers for over five decades. Garth’s Auctions is proud to announce that in the fall of 2009, it will present over 200 photographswhich captured three generations of the Kennedy family while at the “Winter White House”during President John F. Kennedy’s administration through the eventual sale of the Palm Beachhome.

A freelance photographer, Davidoff first photographed then President-elect John F. Kennedyalong side President Herbert Hoover and Ambassador Joseph Kennedy during a party forHoover in Palm Beach. However, it wasn’t until Davidoff later met Rose Kennedy that hewas invited by the matriarch to become a true family intimate capturing photos destined tobe part of the families’ personal archives.
