1ROCOCO REVIVAL HALL CLOCK.Labeled for the A.B. Closson Company, Cincinnati, Ohio, early 20th century, oak.Scrollwork pediment over reeded and fluted columns and resting on paw feet. Themovement has a brass and iron face, a sun-moon-ship dial arch, nine tubes, andstrikes the Westminster, Trinity, or Notre Dame chimes. Retains its original finish,only minor imperfections. 98 1/2”h. 30 1/2”w. 18 1/2”d.

Closson’s has been a staple of the Cincinnati retail scene since the late 19th century. The present clock was likely retailed by Closson just after the turn of the20th century and was made by the firm of Francis Bawo and Charles Dotter of New York. Bawo and Dotter were initially importers of glass and china, but hiredCharles A. Jacques in 1895 to oversee the sale of hall clocks. Initially Jacques usedElliot movements, but began, in 1898, using German Elite movements. The tubeson the present clock are marked for Elite. The case is identical to a number 4 Bawoand Dotter clock that sold at Cowan’s in April 2007, lot 109, though the presentcase retains its original carved cartouche. CONDITION REPORTS: Absentee bidders should call for an updated condition report. This report supersedes the catalog description. Our staff will take a list of the items youwould like examined and give you a time to call back for a detailed report. Photographs are also available for a nominal fee.

ABSENTEE BIDS: Garth’s Auctions, Inc. accepts absentee bids including internet bids. These bids are given to an experienced bidder to execute competitively. All absenteeitems are purchased as inexpensively as possible. Although our absentee bidding system is 100% honest, it is not foolproof and Garth’s Auctions, Inc. isnot responsible for failing to execute any absentee bids. A $50.00 minimum bid is required on all lots. Absentee bids must be submitted in (a minimumof) $5.00 increments. Increments less than $5.00 will not be observed. Garth’s Auctions, Inc. also accepts telephone and live auction internet bids. Forphone bidding it is to your advantage and we strongly recommend placing a “back up bid”.

As many of you may know, our company has taken the “Antiques are green” slogan to heart – promoting our offerings as an ecologically friendly alternative to new furnishings and adopting green business practices whereverpossible. In fact, we look at any new purchase or project, large and small, as an opportunity for responsible stewardship of our resources. Our dedication to walk the talk recently led us to the purchase of a hybrid vehiclefor our sales fleet. The choice was obvious: looks great, economical, and gets the job done.

As a result of the past 12-24 months of worrisome predictions and uncomfortable realities, consignors have beenshaken to the core. More often than not these days, we are reassuring sellers that it remains an ok time to sell –that efforts to predict the return to pre-recession prices are futile. In fact, as we all know, price fluctuations aredependent upon more than solely economic condition(s). But, until consignor confidence meets consumer confidence, auctioneers and dealers will need to be agile enough to adjust their marketing and selling strategiesto meet the market. These are the times that smaller may mean better: companies and individuals who can respondquickly to shifting market conditions will not only survive, but thrive. We believe Garth’s is well-positioned tocreate opportunity where others see challenge: re-focusing on the marketing to the middle, and waiting patientlyfor confidence in the highest end, where we shine, to return.

As our July auction came together and the deadline for marketing materials loomed, it became obvious that thisauction is the product of consignor and market shift. As a result, we needed another new vehicle – this time metaphorically speaking: a vehicle to bring to auction quality objects demanding an international audience, witha piercingly effective and efficient marketing strategy. While our catalogs have become quite eye-catching and aconsignor favorite in the industry, the reality is that catalog events need to be of a certain “economic” formula tomake good business sense. Additionally, recent changes to our Eclectic Auctions, including an online catalog,have yielded steadily increasing average lot values as well as greater national attention, but (as with most estateor house auctions) it still remains largely a regional venue. July’s auction is what we have half-jokingly referredto as our “newest hybrid”: with a quality overview of the offerings delivered to the largest database of Garth’s

clients, additional print advertising and several new on-line venues, we believe we have bridged the gap between seven-figure catalogued auctions and the regional, vintage and collectible events – looks great,makes good business sense, and gets the job done.
