From our Principal, John Maguire
Tēnā koutou katoa ngā whānau, Surrounded by our students, our families, our teachers, staff and community we
celebrated our End of Year Leavers Mass on Tuesday. This was a true celebration of the contribution our senior leavers have made to the college and a wonderful shared farewell for our year 13 students as they embark on their external NCEA examinations. We are very grateful to Fr Andrew Kim and Fr Seph Pijfers for concelebrating our mass. Fr Andrew’s message of journey, the good, the bad and the unexpected, are all attainable with faith and our ongoing connection to God. The message beyond Garin for our leavers is to hold true to the faith and values you have expressed on your journey through College and go out to be people of faith and of service to others.
On behalf of Garin, I farewell our leavers. You have grown from children to young adults in the eyes of your parents and whānau, your teachers, all college staff and your peers. Your journeys have been richly blessed with aroha. Garin College and our community has been your turangawaewae - your place to stand. We are proud of you as people, as contributors, as young Christian men and women. Your contribution to Garin has been immense. You will be missed, you are leaving our College a better place for your presence. God bless you all.
To our families whose daily connection with Garin is concluding with the completion of school for your young person, we thank you also for trusting us with the education of your child. We have enjoyed the collaboration between home and school in establishing your child's pathway through the college and onto their next steps. This is another milestone for you also as a family. We hope that your interest and connections with the college remain and that from within the community, there will be ways for you to reconnect in the years ahead.
It is my privilege to announce and congratulate our students on their appointment to leadership as the House Captain’s for 2020. The role of House Captain is fundamental to building the spirit (wairua) and participation of students in the fun and excitement surrounding our College events and celebrations throughout the year. The house leaders are the bridge through which our students explore the lived spirit and values of each of the house patrons.
Aubert House: Olive Derecourt Sam McCashin Barbier House: Ayden Slade Samantha Carney MacKillop House: Taneeka Lewis Sebastiaan Van Veen McAuley House: Cashmir Simone Simonne MacManus As the NCEA exams are now underway, let our thoughts, prayers and encouragement be with our
students. We wish each and every one of you every success. Each of our pathways to success is individual and it is the progress over time and bringing the best we can to each milestone that takes our smaller steps to the bigger leaps. Your effort and commitment is acknowledged hugely. We look forward to meeting you all again as we celebrate our prizegiving later this term.
The school will seem a quieter place for our Year 9 and 10 students; let’s make the most of the remainder of Term 4. Our students have a role in welcoming our new students on Orientation Day next Friday 15 Nov. This will be a great chance for them to showcase their leadership and knowledge of ‘Life at Garin.’
I wish you all a wonderful weekend. Mā te Atua koe e tiaki - May God be with you John Maguire Principal

End of Year College Mass
We celebrated our End of Year College Mass where we celebrated the achievements of all our learners and those who will be leaving at the end of 2019. The celebration was filled with a focus on the call for Garinians to go out to the world as told by Jesus in Luke 9:1 -6 to “to proclaim the kingdom of God and the Good News”.
Below is an extract from our 2019 Christian Service Leader Jediah Frethey:
For the Year 13’s, the graduating class of 2019, it is time to start your own journey and create your own path. We encourage you all to continue to live a life filled with the Garin College values. Live a life of generosity, Aroha, Rangimarie, Integrity and New Life. Love everyone the way Jesus loves us. Be a voice for those without one and have the courage and conviction to stand up when God calls your name. Let the seeds that have been planted in each of you here at Garin College blossom and flourish as you walk forward in God’s will, leaving your own mark on the world.
And if you ever feel like you’re getting lost in your journey, I encourage you to look to the mountains, to look to the sea, or look in the eyes of a tiny baby. Watch the sunrise, and watch it go down, admire the shimmering stars in the sky all around and remember that our God is an awesome God, and one that created this stunning world around us, and loves each of us with a love so strong he gave himself up on the cross for us.
Holy Spirit I pray now that your presence falls on each of us as we enter this new season of life. Remind us that we are your children that you love so much, created in your image with a specific plan and purpose. Lord fill us with your presence as we go out from here, and guide us so we may live lives devoted to you.

Summer Reading
Relax & Read So what does the research say about how to prevent the ‘Summer Slide’, where students reading skills regress due to lack of use? Part 1 There are 3 important factors, and the first one is Choice. This might seem obvious, but how many of us have ever taken a book off a child and said “No, choose something else. That is too easy/hard/babyish… for you.” And don’t be too sentimental - though you may have loved Swallows & Amazons, or Lord of the Rings, or Famous Five your young reader does not have to! “Children who are given choices for summer reading read more and report higher reading engagement and motivation after summer ends.” (Richard Allington et al, 2012) Studies found that 91% of children are more likely to finish books they choose themselves. Celebrate children’s book choic-es. When we value all reading, we value all readers.

Sarah Carpinter the Nelson Area Executive Officer of St John, presenting Year 12 student Sarah Carter with a First Aid Level 2 Course Voucher and a First Aid Kit. Sarah has an interest in pursuing a Nursing degree, has a great attitude to learning and an excellent attendance record.
Over the weekend, two Garin teams competed in the National NZAquaBot Challenge at the Richmond Pool. The Year 9 team, composed of Malika Rai, Eva Doak, Jessie Edmondson, and Wren
Brudvik-Linder built an underwater robot and designed it to pick up various Pasifika Trade items and
attempt to 'turn on' Orion's Belt through the use of a hall-effect sensor! The girls also created a brilliant
presentation that was delivered to Otago Marine Scientist, Richard de Hamel. Team Garin Goldies were
THIRD equal in NZAquaBot competition . The Year 11 team, Garin Numerators, composed of Caroline Haley
and Brooke Milligan used the school bot to compete in the water portions for a bit of fun. They placed 4th
in the 'Journey Across the Pacific' portion of the competition showing their keen driving skills. Ka pai Garin,
you all did very well!

It was wonderful being part of our final mass on Tuesday. Always an emotional time farewelling the Year 13's, but so lovely seeing their big grins and excitement as they begin their journey's as young adults. The key message in Father Andrew's message was that God is with us wherever we go, through the good, through the bad, and through everything in between. The seniors may not be here in classes anymore, but you are all in our thoughts and prayers always. The Garin Health Team is still available everyone, including seniors on exam leave until the end of the term, so you can email: [email protected] or drop by to the fishbowl if you need anything. Seniors good luck with exams and Juniors, we look forward to seeing you around!
Have a lovely week,
Kate the Counsellor

Day of the Dead, Dia de Los Muertos
Day of the dead, or as it is known in Mexico “Dia de Los Muertos” is a festival native to and
celebrated in Mexico. The Day of the Dead festival is a festival that is dedicated to remembering the friends and family who have passed away. A lot of people might think this to be a sad celebration but it is actually full of joy as we remember those loved ones that passed away. Many might think that Day of the Dead is just a Mexican version of Halloween, but they are definitely wrong. Halloween is a day of fright and terror, but Day of the Dead is an explosion of colour and happiness. During the Day of the Dead festival, shrines of colour and various gifts are made and are put
next to the ones who have passed away to honour them. Ofrendas (offerings) are another important part of Dia de Los Muertos. Four different things are usually put on the shrines to represent the four elements: candles for Fire, fruit for Earth, Water and fluttering paper for Wind. Please feel free to look at the shrine that the Year 9 and 10 spanish classes have created in
the Sacred Space in the library By Misha Warboys and Matthew Riddell - 10E
