Gosford Times 17th September 1915 Died for King and Country

On Wednesday last Rev. Arthur Renwick, Rector of Christ Church, Gosford, received the following telegram from Colo-nel Luscombe: - “Officially reported that No 222 Private Wil-liam Thomas Briggs Gardiner, 7th Light Horse, died of wounds 3rd September. Plase inform Mrs G. Gardiner, Wyo-ming Park, Gosford, and convey deep regret and sympathy of their Majesties the King and Queen, and Commonwealth Government in the loss that she and Army have sustained by death of soldier” Deceased, “Tom” Gardiner, was the only son of Mrs G. Gar-diner, and leaves one sister. He was 23 years of age and spent his last birthday in the trenches at Gallipoli on 26th June. He was one of the first to enlist at his country’s call, and the first Gosford soldier to fall fighting for King and country. On 20th December last he sailed with the 7th Light Horse for service abroad, and after some months spent in Egypt was sent on to the Dardanelles where he took part in the gallant charges at Gallipoli. The deepest sympathy is expressed for his widowed mother and sister, in which the “Times” sincerely joins.

Gosford Times 26th November 1915 His Last Letters

Private “Tommy” Gardiner, son of Mrs Gardiner, of Wyoming, Gos-ford, was wounded by shrapnel at Gallipoli, on the 30th August, and died 3rd September on the hospital ship, “Gloucester Castle”. This week’s mail brought letters written by Private Gardiner from Anzac on the day he was wounded, addressed to his mother and sister. At the time of writing he was in excellent health and spirits, and stated that he had been working as one of the stretcher-bearers. It was while he was helping to remove his wounded comrades that he was struck by shell shrapnel, receiving injuries that ended his promising young life.
