Way of Life
Gandhis teachings inspired people around the world. His main focus was teaching non-violence used to achieve desired goals. Gandhi used this process by fasting, refusing to obey colonial laws in India, and peaceful protests. He believed in truth, simplicity, and faith. Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela followed his teachings and were inspired by him.
Let the first act of every morning be to make the following resolve for the day:
I shall not fear anyone on Earth.
I shall fear only God.
I shall not bear ill will toward anyone.
I shall not submit to injustice from anyone.
I shall conquer untruth by truth. And in resisting untruth, I shall put up with all suffering.
- Mahatma Gandhi

Salt March
Gandhi launched a campaign against the tax on salt in March 1930. He did this because Britain hadmade the law and most Indians could no longer afford salt.
He marched240 miles to the sea to make salt himself illegally. Many Indians joined along with him. It was one of his most successful attempts at upsetting British hold on India. Britain responded by imprisoning over 6,000 people.
This was one of Gandhis many acts that led India to independence.

Prison years
Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years. During this time he was offered freedom if he would stop his violent actions but he refused.
During his jail time he and the other prisoners found ways to communicate with each other. They wrote messages on toilet paper, hid them in food, dirty dishes, or inside the toilet seat.
He also was in secret contact with South Africas president Botha and his successor, Klerk, who was the one who released him from prison.
