2 Pass the Torch

Purpose: Teach children locomotor movement skills Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- beanbags, hula-hoops, music, bowling pins. - gymnasium

Set Up instructions - place five (or however many groups there are) hula-hoops in a row in the gym

- Split children into even groups (can do this by colour of shirts or similar birthdays) - Line teams up in front of their own hula-hoop or “Olympic ring”

- Spread the beanbags around the gym (when modifications are made beanbags will be in different areas)

How to Play - When the music begins, the “torch” (bowling pin) is passed down the line from team-

mate to team-mate - When the students are passing the torch they must be moving in some way (ie: jumping,

hoping, jumping jacks) - When the music stops, the student who is holding the torch is the Olympic athlete

- The other players on that team must now run around the Olympic circle while the athlete is collecting “medals”

- The Olympic athlete must now gather the “medals” or beanbags (one at a time) that are spread around the gym and bring them back to their “home circle”

- Each time the student grabs a beanbag they must use a different way of locomotion - Before the bean bags are put in the home circle, the athlete must join his team-mates

running around the circle, pass the beanbag backward to each player, then put it in the circle

Safety Tips

- Remember to tell students to watch were they are going to avoid collisions - Proper running shoes so children do not slip on objects around

Refinements

- Get groups (or even partners at first) to practice running in a circle and passing the beanbags backward to each other

- Get groups or partners to begin walking slowly then speeding up or spreading out Modification

Simplification: Give students more time to collect the beanbags, or cluster the beanbags closer together Extension: Space the beanbags or even hide them around the gym

Inclusion Modification or Strategy

4 Safari Adventure

Purpose: Teach children body awareness Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- hula-hoops, skipping ropes, benches, music (optional) - gymnasium (or outdoors)

Set Up instructions - Place obstacles around the gym to mimic objects in nature

How to Play - Students move around the gym (or field) in a line acting like different animals that the

teacher shouts out. - Obstacles are put around the playing area and students must use different locomotor skills

to avoid them or step on them - The obstacles put in the gym can represent different objects you would find in nature (ie:

benches are logs, hula-hoops are lily pads and skipping ropes are snakes) - Each student has a chance to be the leader and the students must follow the leader’s

movements for each animal that is called out - The students must move as a group to move over the obstacles

Safety Tips

- ¡collisions Refinements

- Stretching with different levels (ie: tall like a giraffe, low like a frog so the students know the way certain animals move

Modification Simplification: : Remove some obstacles to make it easier Extension: Add obstacles to make the game harder

Inclusion Modification or Strategy - Make the obstacles wider or brighter in colour (for students with visual disabilities). For

someone who has auditory disabilities, tell them to watch the person in front of them so they can use their visual senses instead

6 The Human Ladder

Purpose: Teach students special awareness Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- Skipping ropes (for refinement) - Gymnasium

Set Up instructions - Students sit in a line (about two meters between each player) with their legs straight out

How to Play - After students are lined up sitting with their legs out, the teacher numbers them off

- When the teacher calls a student’s number that student must get up, jump over each student’s legs in the “ladder” and sit back in their spot as quickly as possible.

- Each time a number is called, the teacher will also call a specific form of locomotion (ie: run in slow motion, hop, skip, side step) that the student must follow.

Safety Tips

- Ensure students don’t step on other student’s legs when they are running around the “human ladder”

- Make sure students are spread out enough Refinements

- Set up skipping ropes and practice jumping over them while changing ways of locomotion

Modification Simplification: : Call numbers in order (ie: 1, 2, 3…) so students are expecting who is

going to get called next

Extension: Mix up order numbers are called in or call more than one number at once Inclusion Modification or Strategy

- If student is disabled, look at what number they are first then choose a movement that they will be able to handle

- For visual disabilities, spread people out even more

8 Mouse in the House

Purpose: Teach children locomotor skills and body awareness Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- 3 Skipping ropes/team, 4 frisbees/team, 3 pilons/team, 1 ball of any kind/team - The playing area of this game is a gymnasium

How to Play - Divide into teams of five - Like a relay race so everyone goes one at a time - Walk along skipping rope and then do10 jumping jacks at the pilon - Step on the four Frisbees carefully - “Burpies” Jump down and out – 5 times at the pilon - Skip to the next station and do 5 throw and catches with the ball - Side step to “house”(hoola hoop) - Once first player starts and all players in a line have to copy their movements (jumping

jacks, burpies) - While player doing the course is in between stations (on skipping ropes or Frisbee) the

other players must pass the cheese over the head and under the legs - Last player has to bring the “cheese” (beanbag) to the house - Goal: to get all players and the cheese into the house

Safety Tips

- Instruct children to be careful when stepping on the skipping rope and Frisbees as they can be harder to stabilize on

Refinements

- Put skipping ropes or Frisbees around circle, one person in the middle with ball pass it back forth to the players who are balancing on the skipping rope

Modification Simplification: Take skipping ropes and frisbees out and let students locomote to each station what ever way they want Extension: Complete the course walking backwards

Inclusion Modification or Strategy - The size of the objects could be made bigger for someone with a visual disability. Ex.

Using a wooden board instead of skipping ropes, using hoola hoops instead of Frisbees and using a larger ball for throwing

10 Dance Tag

Purpose: To practice locomotor skills Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- No equipment is needed to play this game - It can be played in any setting that has sufficient area to run

How to play - One person is “it” , once they tag someone that person must start doing a dance move. In

order to unfreeze them another student must come and copy their movement for 5 seconds. This will unfreeze the child who got tagged.

Safety - Proper running shoes to ensure no injuries occur

Refinements - Practicing a game of Simon says in which students must copy dance movements that the

teacher is doing Modifications Simplification: Students only have to copy the movement once to unfreeze their peer

Extension: Two students must copy the movement for 5 seconds in order for the student to become unfrozen

Inclusion Modification or Strategy - If someone were in a wheel chair the game could be changed so that all dance moves had

to be made with just the arms

12 Rock the Boat

Purpose: To develop space awareness Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- No equipment is needed for this game - The playing area would be a gymnasium

How to play - Every wall of the gymnasium is given a name of the correct directions of the boat. For

example the front of the gym will be the bow, the right hand side will be called starboard, the back wall will be called the stern and then left side will be called port. The students start in the middle of the gym the teacher then yells out a direction on the boat. The students then must run and touch the wall of the direction that was called. The teacher continues to yell out different directions in which the students must run on the “boat”.

Safety - Proper footwear is necessary - Make sure space is big enough so students don’t run into one another

Refinements

- Practice using front, back, right and left so that students get used to running to different walls after they were being called

Modifications Simplification: Put the names of the ship on each wall that way students have a reference when picking the correct wall to run to

Extension: Mix up the order in which directions are being called. Teacher could introduce different forms of locomotion into the game. Ex. Yelling out port and skipping

Inclusion Modification or Strategy - Making visual cues along with saying the direction could aid someone with a hearing

disability. These cues would allow them to understand the direction in which they were supposed to travel.

14 Barnyard

Purpose: To teach body awareness

Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area - There is no equipment needed for this game - The game area would be a gymnasium

How to Play - The teacher would divide the class into 4 different groups. Each group would contain an

equal number of students. The teacher would then assign a different animal to each student in the group (ex. Pig, chicken, duck, cow, horse). Each group would contain one of each animal. The teacher would then instruct the students to spread out all over the gym. They then have to locomote according to their animal (ex. Gallop) and make the noise their animal would make. The objective is for the student to find the other 3 animals that are the same as them. After the students have found their group they would then be assigned a new animal and the game would continue on. Safety Tips

- Watch out for other students and be sure not to run into them

Refinements

- Practice locomoting like different animals with the whole class. This will help in the process of elimination in order to find the students who were assigned the same animal.

Modification Simplification: Decreasing the number of different animals assigned in the class

Extension: Instruct students to close their eyes and then find the other animals that are the same. Inclusion Modification or Strategy

- Since students are using both visual and auditory senses the game is already inclusive for children with varying abilities. Ex. Hearing disability, visual disability

16 Keep It Balanced

Purpose: : Develop skills and begin looking at rules of games Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- Music player - Gymnasium – place mats down in center at least 15m by 15m (depending on size of

class) How to Play

- Move through the gym with a minimum of one body part on the floor and a max of three. When music plays students move when music stops students’ balance on whatever body parts are supporting them whether it is one leg or two arms and a leg, etc.

- Safety Tips

- Be aware of others and your position in relation to other to avoid collisions - No hand stands even if you think you can do it

- Stay on the mats (playing area) Safety Tips

- Be aware of others and your position in relation to other to avoid collisions

- No hand stands even if you think you can do it - Stay on the mats (playing area)

Refinements

- Focus on keeping your locomotion at a pace where you can still play the game without error (ie. Putting to many body parts down because you were racing)

- Keep eyes on one stationary object when balancing which will make it easier Modification

Simplification: Slow down the movement focus on the not falling during the balancing period

Allow 4 body parts on ground and more time to balance

Extension: Allow maximum 2 contacts on ground and less time to balance Inclusion Modification or Strategy

- Ensure everyone learns a few way to ‘setup’ their body positions. Example at the beginning show at least 5 different ways to travel and/or balance with different body parts

Switchy Balls Purpose: Develop skills and begin looking at rules of games

Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area - Music player with 3 well known but different types of songs, tennis balls, elephant balls,

rubber balls, etc (various types of balls) - Gymnasium – give a ball to each student

How to Play - Individually

- Bounce ball while moving around gym when song 1 is played (Manipulation & Locomotor)

- Pass to others while moving around gym when song 2 is played (Manipulation & Locomotor)

- Dribble with feet around gym when song 3 is played (Manipulation & Locomotor) - Balance in current position when music stops (Stability)

Safety Tips

- Be aware of the type (size, weight, and texture) of the ball your throwing - Be aware of others and your position in relation to other to avoid collisions

Refinements

- Keep your eye on the ball while accounting for the different types of balls being thrown (ie. lighter balls will be in air longer than heavier & bigger will be easier to catch then smaller)

Modification Simplification: Slow down the movement focus on the catching, bouncing, and dribbling Extension: When song 2 is played change locomotion form (ex. from jogging to sidestepping or hopping)

Inclusion Modification or Strategy - When dribbling with feet if they can’t allow them to use their hands (ie. Wheel Chair - Larger ball for visual disability

20 Circuit of Three

Purpose: Develop skills and begin looking at rules of games Equipment Needed & Organization of Playing Area

- Bean-bag, Hula-hoop, Hockey stick, Lacrosse stick - Gymnasium – 3 stations at least 10 ft away from each other

How to Play - Split into 3 groups and each group take a station

- Station 1 – Throw beanbag into hoop 10 feet away on the ground. Four throws for each person, all throw at same time. 1st throw player has 10 seconds to aim, throw, and retrieve their bag. The teacher blows whistle to signal the 10 sec. Then the 2nd throw is 7sec to do the same then the whistle blows. 3rd is 5 sec, 4th is 3 sec.

- Station 2 - Balance at different levels while holding objects like hockey stick or beanbags on different parts of body. Again 10 seconds for 1st type of balance at high level, 7 sec for 2nd balance at medium level, 5 sec for 3rd balance at low level, 3 sec for last balance at choice level

- Station 3 – Travel using different methods (hopping, walking etc). Again 1st travel method is 10 seconds next is 7, then 5 then 3.

Safety Tips

- Be aware of the time and don’t rush too much at any station also be aware of others and your position in relation to others to avoid collisions.

- Spread out when balancing at station 2 Refinements

- Keep eyes on one stationary object when balancing which will make it easier

- Think of the ways to balance and travel you will use before the time comes to switch so that you will use the full 5 or 3 or 7 seconds to the best of your ability

Modification Simplification: Slow down the timeframes to 14, 12, 10, and 8 seconds.

Extension: Have students add a point system making it competitive When travelling add more speed

When throwing try and do 2 throws in the allotted time Inclusion Modification or Strategy

- Ensure everyone learns a few ways to ‘setup’ their body’s. So at the beginning show at least 5 different ways to travel and balance with different body parts.

- Make sure all players are being involved by having the team collectively chant their team name or a song when changing stations
